Original soundtrack of the movie about Paulinho himself. A sweet, gentle samba singer, Paulinho Da Viola is known as a samba purist, adhering strictly to the old acoustic style and is particularly revered as a revivalist of the instrumental "choro" style. Although he was of the same generation of the rock-oriented tropicalistas and the swanker, slicker post-bossa nova MPB crowd, Da Viola delved into the more antiquated style of the traditional samba cancao and the sambas de morro, sung by the urban poor of Brazil's sprawling slums. He only gets better as time goes on and this initial outing for Biscoito Fino after years on EMI allows him the freedom to stretch his artistry to greater bounds, still innovating and creating beautiful music after all these years.
This album is the soundtrack to the documentary on traditional acoustic samba master hiimself, featuring 16 tracks of golden age samba. Photographer: Milton Montenegro. Unknown Contributor Role: Rodrigo de Castro Lopes.

Meu Tempo E Hoje
$11.85 Audio Mixer: Colin Richardson. Arranger: Rodrigo y Gabriela. The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) who have ...

Meu Tempo E Hoje
$11.42 Personnel includes: Frank Stallone (vocals); Sammy Nestico (arranger, conductor). Recorded at Manta Sound, Toronto, Canada. Audio Mixer: Gary Gray. Recording information: Manta Eastern Studios, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Arranger: Sammy Nestico. Frank Stallone switches gears on In Love in Vain, abandoning his pop/rock style to come on as a Frank Sinatra-style traditional pop singer. Stallone, an accomplished character actor, has studied the styles of Sinatra and especially Bobby Darin, and he avoids the usual mistakes made by rock singers trying to handle this kind of material. In particular, he knows to swing the rhythm rather than hitting every beat spot-on, and he works well with the orchestra led by Sammy Nestico. He has a smooth ...

Meu Tempo E Hoje
$11.89 Personnel: Christina Carter (vocals, guitar). Recording information: Little Room, Northampton, MA (2006). Experimental guitarist/singer Christina Carter, taking a break from her trio Charalambides, recorded these four droning improvisational pieces based around a single key and open guitar tuning. Her vocals and lyrics were made up in the studio, and seem to gush from a subterranean pool of anguish and redemption. This startling effort suggests all kinds of new possibilities for Carter, unencumbered by the restraints of a band. Electrice is a four-cut, 50-minute album by Christina Carter, one half of the experimental duo Charalambides. It is a completely solo offering that features Carter playing guitar and singing with some notable echo and double-voice tracking effects and not much else. The pieces are all very slow, spacious, elliptical, and graceful. Beginning with "Second Death," Carter states that "My words will not die/Another death/My language will not die/A second death/It is gone." This ghostly statement is revisited on the last selection, "Words Are Not My Words," where language turns back on itself and disappears from the speaker only to enter a new interlocutor who never quite speaks back with new language; it's as if it hangs in the air between. Strummed, droning guitar is the vehicle of movement for these hovering, hushed vocals. The two cuts between evoke both movement/displacement (in "Moving Intercepted") ...
