"What a treat to hear someone so deeply rooted in tradition, yet growing in his own beautiful way." -Tom Paxton After winning the NC Songwriter's Co-op song contest in 2000, Jonathan Byrd recorded and released "Wildflowers," his debut CD. Evoking the ghosts of traditional southern music, Byrd served up hard-time mountain hollers like "Velma," a true story of murder in his own family. Soon after "Wildflowers" was released, Jack Lawrence (Doc Watson's right-hand man), was taken with Jonathan's music and included "Velma" on his latest release, "I Don't Need the Whiskey Anymore." Born in Fayetteville, NC, Jonathan learned to sing in the Southern Baptist church where his father preached and his mother played piano. At home, his brother taught him how to play the guitar and Jonathan made tapes to send out to other family members. After high school and four years in the Navy, he began to explore Ireland and the southern Appalachians in a search for his musical roots. Instead of reinterpreting folk classics, though, Jonathan has penned songs that sound as if they were pulled from a long-lost ballad collection. Tom Druckenmiller of 'Sing Out!' magazine called Byrd, "A songwriter of exceptional talent... with the stark storytelling of the finest traditional balladeers." Now, Jonathan Byrd is releasing "The Waitress," an album of more contemporary lyrical pictures- late night diners, jewel thieves, ignored and lonely war veterans- with the same mountain style of ages past.
Personnel: Jonathan Byrd (vocals, guitar); Jason Cade (fiddle); Robbie Link (cello, bass guitar); David DiGiupseppe (accordion).
Recording information: The Rubber Room, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Waitress
$14.69 Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. Nowhere is this truer than on "Fifteen," a kind warning for a teen to watch her heart sung from the perspective ...

$19.39 Not since Prince released the three-hour, three-CD set EMANCIPATION in 1996 or the Magnetic Fields took a similar number of discs for the sprawling 69 LOVE SONGS in 1999 has an artist attempted something as expansive as Vince Gill's THESE DAYS. A four-disc box set of all new material, nearly all of it Gill originals, THESE DAYS is possibly the widest-ranging country album of the modern era. The four discs are thematically and stylistically arranged. Disc one, WORKIN' ON A BIG CHILL, is a 1960s-flavored rock-and-roll album that recalls Bob Dylan's late '60s work with the Band and features Bonnie Bramlett's vocals on several songs. Disc two, THE REASON WHY, is a modern pop record in the style of Shania Twain's international releases, with several duet partners including Sheryl Crow and Leann Rimes. Disc three, SOME THINGS NEVER ...

$10.89 "Colors" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
Though the tragic events of September 11, 2001 inspired many artists to create works celebrating the American way of life, few seemed as appropriate as COLORS by the Oak Ridge Boys. One of the longest-running groups in country music, the band started as a small-town Tennessee gospel combo in the early 1940's. In true Horatio Alger fashion, they eventually became one of the biggest-selling vocal groups in history. Although their personnel has changed many times, the Boys' signature four-part harmony singing has remained as warm, rich and familiar as ever. Here, the group assembles a top-notch collection of overtly patriotic songs that pay tribute both to American institutions and the country's ...
