For its major-label debut, My Chemical Romance amps up the melodies in transforming its unique hardcore approach to more of a pop-punk style. To say this Jersey quintet subscribes to the half-empty-glass outlook on love and relationships is like saying Johnny Rotten is a slightly irritable chap. Buried amid the abundant sing-along choruses and the tasty, two-guitar attack of fretburners Ray Toro and Frank Iero is doom-and-gloom imagery that ranges from the suicidal allusions of the soaring "Cemetery Drive" to the murder and firing squads of the insistent "Give 'Em Hell Kid." Frontman Gerard Way exudes plenty of charisma, and his clear and powerful phrasing works well in a format where vocal precision is often an afterthought. In particular, Way shines within the bizarre confines of the quirky "You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison" and the subtler nuances of the dream-pop-flavored "The Ghost of You." Falling somewhere between metal and punk with a distinctive pop sensibility, THREE CHEERS FOR SWEET REVENGE puts My Chemical Romance in line for the kind of success achieved Blink 182.
My Chemical Romance: Gerard Way (vocals); Frank Iero, Ray Toro (guitar); Mikey Way (bass guitar); Matt Pelissier (drums).
Rolling Stone (p.120) - 3 stars out of 5 - "SWEET REVENGE has the same shout-along choruses, speedy drums and horror themes that fueled Glenn Danzig's old outfit, but it also adds cool metal licks and a sneaky sense of humor..." Spin (p.63) - Ranked #34 in Spin's "34 Best Albums of the Year" - "[They] take emo to its logical comic-book conclusion on an album with a plot that's like Dante for the Hot Topic crowd." Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge
$16.19 Recorded live at Waterman's Arts Centre, West London, England on March 10 1995. Includes liner notes by Martin Wakeling.
Pleased with the success of a previous casual collaboration, when his opening act The Wizards of Twiddly had joined him onstage for a couple of numbers, Kevin Ayers started touring with the band intermittently for a year. TURN THE LIGHTS DOWN! captures one of these dates, at the Waterman's Arts Centre in London, for posterity.
Guitarist Carl Bowry and his colleagues lend an added dimension to such Ayers favorites as "Didn't Feel Lonely 'Till I Thought of You," "Lady Rachel," and "Why Are We Sleeping?" ...

| | Pilot Radio Antiques CD (2002)
Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge
$14.79 Pilot Radio's Antiques is a slick and straightforward sophomore effort, solidly in line with the mainstream sounds of Matchbox Twenty or Train. Vocalist Ricky Young has the sort of flat yet still emotive voice that's well suited for music like this -- his listless phrasing lends some potentially problematic lyrics ("There's something wrong with the radio/Because all I hear are sad songs," from the moody "All Along") the proper amount of weight, so that much of Antiques approaches the atmospheric self-involvement mulled over so much by Counting Crows' Adam Duritz. This is Generation X music, saved from the middle of the road by wry, resigned wit and a collective failure to make relationships last longer than two weeks. A cool calliope effect shimmers along in "World Without You" before a filtered circus organ completes its dreamy, lonely guy landscape; meanwhile, the spiteful-to-sad "Good Thing You're Young" has its urgency enlivened by piano and fiddle, and opener "Obvious Things" washes the back-and-forth of a couple's argument in layers of guitar (is the "Come strong" lyric a Jim Rome reference?). Pilot Radio might have spread some of the grit in standout "Sunshine" around -- Antiques has a tendency to be too slick at times. But overall it's a strong album, and one that should give impressionable twentysomethings more tuneful fodder for fretting over failed love affairs. ~ Johnny Loftus

| | Elders Racing The Tide CD (2007)
Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge
$11.15 The Elders may be based in Kansas City, but you'd never know it to hear their music, which is full of references to Irish history and myth. The sextet has a rock-based sound played on amplified instruments, with Steve Phillips' electric guitar prominent in the mix. But the pennywhistles, mandolins, and accordions are never drowned out. The Elders are more traditional than, say, Black 47, as expatriate Irish bands go, but they play original songs, mixing in part ...
