(1 Customer Review)
International pop star Youssou N'Dour explores of the themes and sounds of Senegal's Sufi culture on this striking 2004 release. Markedly different than the artist's other albums, on which African elements combine with Caribbean influence and ... Full Descriptionvarious American styles (including soul, jazz, and rock), EGYPT moves away from N'Dour's trademark pop and deep into the territory of traditional religious music. Though characterized by an undercurrent of West African rhythms and inflections, the sound here--as the title indicates--draws on North African and Middle Eastern Arab music, and features such regional instruments as the oud, the arghul (a double-reed bamboo flute), tablas, and various Arab Gulf percussion.
There is a distinct classical aura here (the personnel list includes an arranger, a conductor, and a score manager). The Fathy Salama Orchestra, which backs N'Dour throughout, features--in addition to Egyptian flutes and drums--first and bass violins, and the group's complex, elegant interplay gives these recordings a stately, stirring feel. N'Dour's voice, in contrast to its usual role as a high, soaring lead, blends subtly into the musical fabric here. A recording notable for its focus, passion, and beauty, EGYPT is possibly N'Dour's riskiest and most artistically rewarding album.
While N'Dour's international releases have always combined Senegalese musical traditions with outside sources of inspiration, "Egypt" takes a fresh approach. On this album, the rhythms and melodies of Senegal drive arrangements featuring Egyptian and Arabian orchestral sounds.
Personnel: Youssou N'Dour (vocals); The Fathy Salama Orchestra (various instruments); Babou Laye (kora); Beugue Fallou Ensemble (percussion, background vocals); Mbaye Dieye Faye (percussion); Kabou Gueye, Souka Gueye, Mama Gueye (background vocals).
Recording information: Hany Mihanna Studio, Cairo, Egypt; Mix City, Cairo, Egypt; Stuido Xippi, Dakar, Egypt.

Egypt album
$6.39 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room.
Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica and vocals ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Egypt CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Egypt music CDs
$12.05 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they embraced THE LAMB ...
| | Bright Eyes I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning CD (2005)
Egypt songs
$9.79 In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with twangy, down-home feel of alt-country and folk music.
I'M WIDE AWAKE begins with Oberst telling a story that morphs into "At the Bottom of Everything," a jangly, upbeat tune featuring My Morning Jacket's Jim James on backing vocals. Throughout the record, Oberst reaches nearly hysterical peaks, seemingly overcome with emotion as his wavering voice, which often recalls Violent Femmes' ...
| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
Egypt album
$8.55 Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful drumming. Each song is based around memorable vocal hooks and sensitive lyrical content.
Many tracks on CATCH WITHOUT ARMS have a searching ...
| | Youssou N'Dour Rokku Mi Rokka CD (2007)
Egypt CD music
$15.65 With a title that means "give and take" in Youssou N'Dour's native language, Senegalese, ROKKU MI ROKKA presents a vibrant set of traditionally rooted North African songs. The follow-up to the worldbeat superstar's Grammy-winning EGYPT, this 2007 album, issued on the respected Nonesuch label, is carried along by light, frenetic percussion and lilting melodies that allow N'Dour's emotive vocals to shine brightly, ...
| | Townes Van Zandt In Pain CD (2000)
Egypt music CDs
$10.45 The mid-to-late '90s found the walls closing in on renowned country/folk troubadour Van Zandt. As his physical and psychological travails took an ever greater toll on him, his performances became increasingly erratic, sometimes difficult to watch, as he often virtually self-destructed right before one's eyes. Fortunately, the too-appropriately titled IN PAIN--which features various European live performances from '94 to '96--cherry-picks the most intense, rewarding moments from Van Zandt's last haunted years.
The ghosts gaining ...

| | Nathan Madsen White A Christmas CD CD (2006)
Egypt songs
$5.95 White A Christmas CD By Nathan Madsen I grew up in Oregon, we didn’t have white Christmas’s there very often. I remember that when it did snow they would cancel school with one snow flake on the ground and it was an extra holiday for the children, if you were really lucky and prayed really hard, it might even snow enough to go sledding that afternoon. Then after all of that hard work come in for some hot cocoa that mother had just made for you and your friends. Now older and in Idaho with a child of my own I felt that naming my CD white is appropriate because of the symbolic nature that color brings to the season. I live in Idaho where I get to spend much of my time inside at the piano writing a musical soundtrack to my life, and to the seasons. I love the first snow as one of the tracks I recorded for the CD. This project has been a few years in coming. After a hundred or so rejection letters from record labels, and doubting my own abilities just as many times, I mustered up the courage and invested in myself (I guess I’m a believer in the kind of return I’ll get…) I hope you enjoy ...
