Whereas most alto saxophonists of his generation were (quite understandably) under the sway of Charlie Parker stylistically, Lee Konitz always blazed his own path, his horn lines sounding almost detached and dry-ice cool even on the most scorching tunes. While some musicians find their forte and never stray far from it, Konitz challenges himself with vastly different contexts--playing accompanied only by bass and drums, working with a string section, embarking on improvisations with guitarist Derek Bailey, and even contributing to the Elvis Costello album NORTH.
MORE LIVE-LEE was recorded at the Los Angeles, California club the Jazz Bakery, with Konitz accompanied only by the nimble, lyrical piano playing of Alan Broadbent. The program is mostly standards, performed with a mixture of warm, subtle swing, intellectual wit, and brevity (the longest tune is eight minutes), with a complete lack of overt sentimentality. A particular high point is the elegant, melodious original "Nothin'," where the artist's alto soars completely alone. Though not an ideal introduction (that would be SOUND OF SURPRISE or MOTION), fans of Konitz won't be disappointed by this exceptional live outing.

JazzTimes (p.84) - "Konitz is a melodicist devoted to ceaselessly evolving originality or, perhaps more precisely, to avoiding cliché. He reaches his goal here, accompanied and inspired by breathtaking pianist Alan Broadbent." | | Thelonious Monk Monk 'Round The World CD (2004) Bonus DVD
More Live-Lee
$13.19 This release includes a bonus DVD featuring live performances of "Criss Cross," "Rhythm A Ning," and "Nutty" recorded in London, England in 1965.
Given the plethora of live recordings made of Thelonious Monk in the 1960s (when everyone suddenly seemed to recognize his genius 20-plus years after he began composing and playing), this compilation provides a valuable service in bringing together the best of those performances. Between 1961 and 1965 Monk toured regularly with a quartet that featured Charlie Rouse on tenor sax and a revolving bassist and drummer, and was particularly well received (and documented) in Europe. MONK 'ROUND THE WORLD collects seven tracks from those years.
The tunes are among Monk's best, and have rightfully become standards--they will be familiar to anyone with a knowledge of classic jazz. The sprightly, angular sections of "Epistrophy," the stealthy groove-prowl of "Blue Monk," the beautiful ballad "Ruby, My Dear," and the witty, spastic "Rhythm-A-Ning" are included here in excellent versions. The three quartets featured (with ...

| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
More Live-Lee
$12.89 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release ...

More Live-Lee
$12.59 XAVA was first introduced to music at Pilgrim Baptist Church, in the city of San Mateo , California at the age of 5. Throughout his formative years, XAVA was fascinated with the way music was “put together”, so he learned how to compose and arrange words and music. He began singing commercials that came on television in competition (friendly of course!) with his “Big Sister” Joyce…Who could REALLY SING!This led him to learn how to play the guitar, piano and a little drums, with some serious encouragement from other musically endowed members of his family. Time and serious patience paid off and ultimately led him up the road to band development, group membership, support vocalist and recording artist. XAVA has been privileged to have worked with such notables as Rahn Coleman (noted musician and conductor), Donny Dee, William “Mickey” Stevenson, Ja’Net Dubois (formerly of Good Times), Le’ Richard (guitarist/writer/arranger/producer), Jim Gardiner (producer/engineer/owner-Pajama Studios, Oakland ,Ca.), David Stork (owner: STORKSOUNDS Studio), Joey Tarrantino ( Fantasy Recording Studios)Terrenta Patton (engineer/producer/arranger/writer/performer/), Tony Saunders (owner Magic Castle Studios), Larry Batiste, ...
