Subjected music CDs
$13.69 Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like climaxes is intermittently ...
| | Tool Aenima CD (1996) (Import) Germany
Subjected songs
$13.49 AENIMA was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package. "Aenima" won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
On its second full-length album, this hard-rocking quartet delivers 15 tracks of unrelenting aggression and focused intensity. Rather than overwhelm with huge sonic washes of guitar and booming drums, Tool employs a propulsive, snaky approach that makes use of undulating rhythms and clipped, percussive guitar riffs. Maynard James Keenan's vocals follow suit, opting for a heavily processed slow burn instead of the post-grunge bellow favored by so many hard-rock bands. Instead of flailing uncontrollably in all directions, the group's raw, energetic sound is tightly directed for maximum impact.

| | Dream Theater Falling Into Infinity CD (1997)
Subjected album
$9.09 Dream Theater's specialty is atmospheric metal, at times heavy, at times sinister, with a sharp techno edge. "New Millennium," the disc's opening cut, defines the sound: ringing guitars, a driving beat, start-stop dynamics and rolling drum crescendos. There's a bit of a Rush influence at work here, as well ...

| | Xumantra Singing Bowls CD (1999)
Subjected music CDs
$18.19 Marco Dolce, aka Xumantra, is a student of Tibetan singing bowls and their history. He explains that there is no documentation of their use in ancient rituals, but that "rumors" refer to secrecy about their roles. Singing Bowls, his debut CD, demonstrates the sonority and power of the bowls. The vibrations and harmonics tune to the synapses of the brain. Deep listeners will enter into a trancelike state. Meditation is a natural ...

| | Throwdown Haymaker CD (2003)
Subjected CD music
$10.95 Throwdown's followers insist that the Southern California residents are a cut above most of the bands in the metalcore field, which was extremely crowded in the '90s and early 2000s. And when Haymaker is playing, one is inclined to agree with that assertion. For all its bombast and sledgehammer brutality, Haymaker is simply smarter and better constructed than most of 2003's metalcore CDs -- which is saying a lot when you consider just how much of a metalcore glut there was that year. Haymaker isn't quite as heavy and dense as some metalcore outings; Throwdown give listeners more room to breathe and don't go out of their way to be exhausting. But while that room-to-breathe factor is a plus, it isn't the main thing that makes Haymaker superior to competing metalcore discs -- the things that make this album above average are the hooks, the vocals, and the lyrics. Lead singer Dave Peters favors the sort of tortured, screaming vocal style that metalcore is known for, but his screaming doesn't make the lyrics difficult or impossible to understand (which is a common problem among metalcore, grindcore, death metal, and black metal bands). You can easily understand the lyrics that are ...

$6.59 | | Demons & Wizards Touched By The Crimson King CDs (2005) Import; Limited Edition
Subjected music CDs
$24.65 Demons & Wizards head in a more acoustic direction with TOUCHED BY THE CRIMSON KING, the album following their self-titled debut. The album contains 14 tracks including "Wicked Witch," "Dorian," and "Lunar Lament."
In the early '80s, a style of heavy metal was fast rising, in which groups sang about (and even to a point, dressed like) characters from an era long ago, in which gentlemen dressed in armor, and saved damsels in distress in tall castles. While some of these groups built a long-term career (Dio, Iron Maiden, etc.), many fell by the wayside as the style faded away, and was replaced by thrash and glam metal acts. By the early '90s, some of the music from these earlier bands could be detected in such new acts as Dream Theater and Iced Earth, who also pushed the 'technicality' of their music up a notch. Fast-forward another ten years to the early 2000s, and there is a new crop of bands that combine both of these metal eras together, especially by the prog metal "supergroup" Demons & Wizards. Comprised of Iced Earth's Jon Schaffer and Blind Guardian's Hansi Kürsch, the duo issued their second album in 2005, Touched by the Crimson King. Picture a modern metal soundtrack accompanying ...

| | Wuthering Heights Shadow Cabinet CDs (2006)
Subjected album
$14.49 Wuthering Heights just may have created a new subgenre of heavy metal -- frantic prog metal -- with their fourth studio release overall, 2007's The Shadow Cabinet. Sure, bands such as Iron Maiden, Queensr˙che, and Dream Theater may have helped trailblaze prog metal. But Wuthering Heights take it to a whole new dramatic level on The Shadow Cabinet -- especially such triumphant tracks as "Demon Desire," "Faith -- Apathy Divine, Pt. 1," and "I Shall Not Yield." Not all of the album is an over the top prog metal frenzy, however -- "The Raven" lets the tempo drop down a notch or two, while ...
