Subjected album
$10.39 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN ...

| | Anvil This Is Thirteen CD (2009) Bonus Track
Subjected album
$12.45 While Anvil never really got the chance to make a bid for mainstream success, and it's too late now -- they've got an affectionate documentary about themselves, the success of which has gotten them a deal to release this album, but the industry just doesn't make stars anymore, certainly not in metal. The best Anvil can hope for is that they'll be able to go out (or carry on for a few more years, if they choose to do so) with some self-respect. Luckily, THIS IS THIRTEEN is more than good enough to achieve that goal. The production by Chris Tsangarides, ...
| | Tool 10,000 Days CD (2006)
Subjected CD music
$11.75 To its legion of fans, everything the band Tool does is an event, but the elaborate plan behind their sporadic release schedule--roughly five years, on average, between albums--is due primarily to the time and effort the band packs into each successive effort. To title their fourth album 10,000 DAYS, then, isn't as much an exaggeration as it would seem. Tool are America's most consummate mainstream perfectionists, revitalizing progressive rock to the grandeur of its '70s heyday, but updated with technocratic tension and existential dread not known ...
| | Xumantra Singing Bowls CD (1999)
Subjected music CDs
$18.19 Marco Dolce, aka Xumantra, is a student of Tibetan singing bowls and their history. He explains that there is no documentation of their use in ancient rituals, but that "rumors" refer to secrecy about their roles. Singing Bowls, his debut CD, demonstrates the sonority and power of the bowls. The vibrations and harmonics tune to the synapses of the brain. Deep listeners will enter into a trancelike state. Meditation is a natural occurrence, almost unavoidable. These instruments are ideal for this purpose. This disc ...

| | Throwdown Haymaker CD (2003)
Subjected CD music
$10.95 Throwdown's followers insist that the Southern California residents are a cut above most of the bands in the metalcore field, which was extremely crowded in the '90s and early 2000s. And when Haymaker is playing, one is inclined to agree with that assertion. For all its bombast and sledgehammer brutality, Haymaker is simply smarter and better constructed than most of 2003's metalcore CDs -- which is saying a lot when you consider just how much of a metalcore glut there was that year. Haymaker isn't quite as heavy and dense as some metalcore outings; Throwdown give listeners more room to breathe and don't go out of their way to be exhausting. But while that room-to-breathe factor is a plus, it isn't the main thing that makes Haymaker superior to competing metalcore discs -- the things that make this album above average are the hooks, the vocals, and the lyrics. Lead singer Dave Peters favors the sort of tortured, screaming vocal style that metalcore is known for, but his screaming doesn't make the lyrics difficult or impossible to understand (which is a common problem among metalcore, grindcore, death metal, and black metal bands). You can easily understand the lyrics that are coming out of his mouth, and those lyrics ...
| | Fabulosos Sunglows Hits From 1960S CD (2004)
$6.59 | | Demons & Wizards Touched By The Crimson King CDs (2005) Import; Limited Edition
Subjected music CDs
$24.65 Demons & Wizards head in a more acoustic direction with TOUCHED BY THE CRIMSON KING, the album following their self-titled debut. The album contains 14 tracks including "Wicked Witch," "Dorian," and "Lunar Lament."
In the early '80s, a style of heavy metal was fast rising, in which groups sang about (and even to a point, dressed like) characters from an era long ago, in which gentlemen dressed in armor, and saved damsels in distress in tall castles. While some of these groups built a long-term career (Dio, Iron Maiden, etc.), many fell by the wayside as the style faded away, and was replaced by thrash and glam metal acts. By the early '90s, some of the music from these earlier bands could be detected in such new acts as Dream Theater and Iced Earth, who also pushed the 'technicality' of their music up a notch. Fast-forward another ten years to the early 2000s, and there is a new crop of bands that combine both of these metal eras together, especially by the prog metal "supergroup" Demons & Wizards. Comprised of Iced Earth's Jon Schaffer and Blind Guardian's Hansi Kürsch, the duo issued their second album in 2005, Touched by the Crimson King. Picture a modern metal soundtrack accompanying a triumphant ride through a forest on horseback, and you have an idea ...

| | Wuthering Heights Shadow Cabinet CDs (2006)
Subjected album
$14.65 Wuthering Heights just may have created a new subgenre of heavy metal -- frantic prog metal -- with their fourth studio release overall, 2007's The Shadow Cabinet. Sure, bands such as Iron Maiden, Queensr˙che, and Dream Theater may have helped trailblaze prog metal. But Wuthering Heights take it to a whole new dramatic level on The Shadow Cabinet -- especially such triumphant tracks as "Demon Desire," "Faith -- Apathy Divine, Pt. 1," and "I Shall Not Yield." Not all of the album is an over the top prog metal frenzy, however -- "The Raven" lets the tempo drop down a notch or two, while "Sleep" is a showcase for the talents ...
