Long before Doris Day became one of the most famous faces on the silver screen in the 1950's and 1960's, the flaxen-haired beauty made her mark as a torch singer. SECRET LOVE, chronicling the dulcet-toned singer's work between 1947 and 1953, is a testament to the vocalist's versatility. In a foreshadowing of her motion picture work, Day seems just as at ease pouring her soul into a sultry ballad like "Pretty Baby" as cooing playfully on the borderline novelty "Enjoy Yourself, It's Later Than You Think."
Doris von Kappelhoff (born 1924) became, as Doris Day, a major star fronting the Les Brown band, then went on to even greater heights in Hollywood, eventually to become one of the most successful box office stars of all time. "Secret Love" (her million s

| | Barbra Streisand Love Is The Answer CD (2009) Bonus Track
Secret Love CD music
$11.45 Even before their first session together, Barbra Streisand and collaborator Diana Krall designed LOVE IS THE ANSWER as a deeply emotional record: "each song an exploration concerning matters of the heart." And with the arrangements of maestro Johnny Mandel simply drawing occasional shading around Streisand's expressive voice--often leaving that voice as the only instrument--the album goes well beyond the usual saloon-song tropes to become a heart-wrenching experience on virtually every track. Additionally, although much was made of the two divas' collaboration, Krall's piano stays in the background, and Streisand's is the only voice heard here. Nearly every song is a classic of tender balladry, despite the fact that none had been put on album by Streisand before during her long career. Those facts alone should leave Streisand fans in ecstasy, as practically nothing stands in the ...
| | Neil Diamond Christmas Album CD (1992)
Secret Love music CDs
$8.49 Featuring many classic Christmas carols and hymns, as well as John Lennon's "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)," "Jingle Bell Rock," and an original Neil Diamond composition in "You Make It Feel Like Christmas," THE CHRISTMAS ALBUM is a treasure trove of Christmas cheer hosted by one of the most abiding names in the American pop canon.
Produced by 1960s icon Peter Asher, who was one half of the duo Peter and Gordon and has also collaborated with Brian Wilson, this second volume of Neil Diamond's collection of Christmas songs features a mix of traditional material like "Away in a Manger," heard here in an updated arrangement, the pop classic "I'll Be Home For Christmas," and "Joy to the World." Timeless and enduring, these songs, and Diamond's warm delivery, ...
| | Sarah Brightman Eden CD (1998)
Secret Love songs
$11.39 With EDEN, Broadway diva Sarah Brightman ("Requiem," "Cats") stretches beyond the constraints of what's considered show music. Here, she sings an assortment of classical adaptations, rock, and sleek modern pop songs.
The entrancing opener, "In Paradisum" combines pre-recorded nature sounds, atmospheric textures, and echoes of Gregorian chant, setting ...
| | Carpenters Now And Then CD (1973) Remastered
Secret Love album
$7.85 Featuring a surprisingly poignant cover photo of a suburban house--not unlike the Downey, California homestead in which Karen and Richard Carpenter grew up--NOW AND THEN is a concept album about the music that inspired Karen and Richard in their childhood. Besides the hit single "Sing" and a charming take on Hank Williams' "Jambalaya," the centerpiece of NOW AND THEN is Richard Carpenter and John Bettis' nostalgic "Yesterday Once More.
The song opens and closes a side-long medley of early-'60s pop hits that includes the Beach Boys' "Fun Fun Fun," Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," the Crystals' "Da Doo Ron Ron" and Jan and Dean's "Deadman's Curve." Also included are Shelly Fabares' "Johnny Angel," Bobby Vee's "The Night Has A ...

| | Joni James At Carnegie Hall CD (1960)
Secret Love CD music
$13.89 Recorded live at Carnegie Hall, New York, New York on May 3, 1959.
This recording captures vocalist Joni James during her debut performance at Carnegie Hall. She was likewise the first pop musician to play at the venerable venue. When At Carnegie Hall was issued in 1960, it became an immediate hit with enthusiasts, and one of James' best-selling long-players, eventually going double platinum. The 100-member Symphony of the Air and the assembled 40-voice chorale -- under the supervision of her musical director/husband Anthony Acquaviva -- helped James re-create some of her most memorable platters for the SRO crowd. What sets the music of Joni James apart from her teen idol pop vocalist contemporaries is the maturity and refined elegance in her delivery. Ironically, it's the same quality that is ...
| | Astrud Gilberto Diva Series CD (2003)
Secret Love music CDs
$7.99 Recorded between 1964 & 1969. Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald.
Astrud Gilberto, the Brazilian canary with the voice like honey and diction that defied belief, has been compiled many times on Verve, but rarely as well as on her entry in 2003's The Diva Series. A 21-track of her prime decade, the '60s, this one includes all of the classics associated with her: "The Girl From Ipanema," "Agua de Beber," "Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)," "So Nice (Summer Samba)," and "Dindi." Not all of her LPs have been reissued on CD (in the States), so the compilers also added tracks that may surprise a few Gilberto fans, like "Eu e Voce" and "Canto de Ossanha (Let Go)." ~ John Bush
This is part of Verve's Diva Series.
