| | Elton John Rare Masters CDs (1992)
Ocean Gypsy
$24.99 RARE MASTERS includes rare singles, previously unreleased material, and the long out-of-print FRIENDS soundtrack.
In addition to the expected b-sides and previously unreleased outtakes, RARE MASTERS is notable for including in its entirely the soundtrack John and Bernie Taupin wrote in the late-'60s for the British movie FRIENDS. The soundtrack songs are early, unpolished John, but among them is the touching buddy song "Friends," (not the Bette Midler-popularized Buzzy Linhart composition) a minor hit in 1971. Among the many surprises elsewhere on RARE MASTERS is "Rock Me When He's Gone," a gospelly number from 1971 whose raw, stripped-down production emphasizes a feeling that the much better-known "Border Song" only hinted at. A nearly 9-minute-long alternate version of "Madman Across The Water" is similarly raw, and highlights its bluesy lead guitar in a way that John rarely did in those early days. You also get John blasting through the Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There" with John Lennon.
Includes liner notes by Bernie Taupin and Andrew Sandoval.
Producers: Caleb Quaye, Steve Brown, Gus Dudgeon.
Compilation producer: Bill Levinson

| | Clifton Chenier Zydeco Sont Pas Sale CD (1964)
Ocean Gypsy
$9.49 This set collects songs from Clifton Chenier's seven other albums on the Arhoolie label. They date from 1964 to the 1980s (Chenier died in 1987). All of the 15 selections are sung in his first language, Louisiana Creole French, and he's accompanied by his Red Hot Louisiana Band. This set gives ample justification for his title: the King Of Zydeco.
Chenier's accordion and vocals are full of wit and warmth. He can dazzle with joy and he can move with blues-filled passion. A few tracks are live, and all capture the essential interplay of the ensemble. Their subtle rhythmic layering is hypnotic and famously danceable. The band personnel varied throughout the years, but one mainstay was his brother Cleveland Chenier on rubboard. ZYDECO SONT PAS SALE is an excellent introduction to the music of Clifton Chenier.
Recorded between 1964 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Chris Strachwitz.
Personnel includes: Clifton Chenier (vocals, accordion); Morris Chenier (fiddle); Cleveland Chenier (rubboard).

| | Tyrannosaurus Hives CD (2004)
Ocean Gypsy
$12.59 From tongue-in-cheek monster-movie blues ("Diabolic Scheme") to the herky-jerky, Devo-esque "Two-Timing Touch and Broken Bones," to the bouncy fun of the album's lead-off single "Walk Idiot Walk," the Hives push all the right rock buttons. Garage-bred aesthetics, like fist-pumping anthemic choruses and singer Howlin' Pelle Almquist's rasp-scream, are nicely counterbalanced by crisp production and the occasional keyboard embellishment. While they're not stunningly original, it is hard to argue with the Hives. This is everything rock music should be--catchy, rhythmically infectious, and unapologetically wild.
Riding high on the success of their second full-length album VENI VIDI VICIOUS, and the singles collection YOUR NEW FAVOURITE BAND, the Hives returned to blow more doors open with 2004's TYRANNOSAURUS HIVES. Steeped inexorably in the influence of the Stooges, the New York Dolls, and the nervous, jittery punk and New Wave of CBGB's golden era, this Swedish quintet offers up a rock & roll brew difficult to resist. With their dependably raucous party vibe, the Hives churn out spastic, riff-driven tunes with sing-along choruses over taunt grooves and jackhammer rhythms.
The Hives: Howlin' Pelle Almquist, Nicholaus Arson, Vigilante Carlstroem, Dr. Matt Destruction, Chris Dangerous.
