| | Michael Dunford Ocean Gypsy CD Michael Dunford Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
The group on this CD is Michael Dunford's Renaissance, formed by the composer-guitarist of the 1970s progressive band, with Stephanie Adlington singing lead and Richard Brown playing keyboards and writing the arrangements. Ocean Gypsy is a partly successful attempt to revive and reconsider the group's '70s sound in an acoustic idiom. The songs will be familiar, a cross-section of classic Renaissance album highlights, including the title track, "Things I Don't Understand (Part 2)," "Young Prince and Princess," "Carpet of the Sun," and "At the Harbour," the latter with its original opening and closing from the music of Claude Debussy. Richard Brown's orchestrations are a little more playful in character and lighter in texture than the originals (mostly by Richard Hewson), and involve fewer instruments, but otherwise don't add enormously to the existing versions. Much more importantly, Adlington has an impressive vocal range but lacks the power that characterized Annie Haslam's singing on this same repertory. The playing is very good, but the whole album, with the possible exceptions of "Young Prince and Princess" and "A Trip to the Fair" -- which benefits from a fine reed solo -- stands in the shadow of the originals. ~ Bruce Eder

Ocean Gypsy
$9.39 Part of Sire's "Plundering The Vaults" series. Compilation of early Sire material by the group. Original founding members Keith Relf and Jim McCarty (of The Yardbirds) left Renaissance before these volumes were recorded.
This 75-minute compilation and its companion volume are just about the only acknowledgments on the part of Sire Records that it ever had a progressive rock catalog, somewhere in between signing the Ramones and Madonna. The song lineup on this first volume heavily favors the group's early repertory, including songs originally done for the Sovereign label, represented here in concert recordings from Renaissance Live at Carnegie Hall. How attractive that is depends upon how one feels about those performances, versus the original studio renditions (available from One Way Records domestically and, in superior versions, from HTD Records in England). They were never ...

Ocean Gypsy
$24.99 RARE MASTERS includes rare singles, previously unreleased material, and the long out-of-print FRIENDS soundtrack.
In addition to the expected b-sides and previously unreleased outtakes, RARE MASTERS is notable for including in its entirely the soundtrack John and Bernie Taupin wrote in the late-'60s for the British movie FRIENDS. The soundtrack songs are early, unpolished John, but among them is the touching buddy song "Friends," (not the Bette Midler-popularized Buzzy Linhart composition) a minor hit in 1971. Among the ...
| | Renaissance Song For All Seasons CD (2005)
Ocean Gypsy
$9.05 Three members of the classic Renaissance lineup, Annie Haslam, Michael Dunford, and Terence Sullivan, reunited in a sextet lineup -- filled out by Rave Tesar on piano and other keyboards, Mickey Simmonds on keyboards and vocals, and David Keyes on bass and vocals -- for a 2001 tour of Japan that yielded this 105-minute concert recording In the Land of the Rising Sun: Live in Concert. Haslam's voice is still in excellent shape, to judge by the results, hitting those high notes well, if not with quite the same power than she did in the '70s. The repertory encompasses both older and newer songs, from the Ashes Are Burning album all the way up thru the group's 21st century work, such as "Lady from Tuscany." The presence of two keyboard players, coupled with Haslam's vocal instrument, gives the group a vast melodic range, and fans will almost certainly be thrilled with the sonic textures and the sheer range of sounds generated by the group -- there seem to be genuine orchestral timbres here on "Opening Out" and other numbers, and there's also room for Dunford's acoustic guitar to be heard well on "Carpet of the Sun," and "Midas Man," among others. ~ Bruce Eder

$9.09 Originally released in 1979, this is the U.S. CD debut with the original album cover artwork. 10 tracks including, 'Jekyll & Hyde', 'Golden Key' and 'Friends'. Standard jewelcase. 2001 release.
This is one of the better late-era Renaissance albums from the original continuity of the "mark II" lineup of the group (which is the one everyone knows). It's also something of a step up from the two preceding albums, with lush, melodic passages, beautiful lyrics, and some splendid playing by all concerned. Moreover, it rocks pretty well too, songs like "Secret Mission" being one of the better showcases for the group's rhythm section, as well as offering Annie Haslam in a glittering, dramatic showcase for her vocals. ...

| | Clifton Chenier Zydeco Sont Pas Sale CD (1997)
Ocean Gypsy
$9.49 This set collects songs from Clifton Chenier's seven other albums on the Arhoolie label. They date from 1964 to the 1980s (Chenier died in 1987). All of the 15 selections are sung in his first language, Louisiana Creole French, and he's accompanied by his Red Hot Louisiana Band. This set gives ample justification for his title: the King Of Zydeco.
Chenier's accordion and vocals are full of wit and warmth. He can dazzle with joy and he can move with blues-filled passion. A few tracks are live, and all capture the essential interplay of the ...
