When Aaron Fink and Markus James left Universal Records act Lifer to join the then-unsigned Breaking Benjamin, many hard-rock fans were skeptical. WE ARE NOT ALONE, the latter band's sophomore effort, promises to silence the naysayers for good. Led by powerful vocalist Ben Burnley, Breaking Benjamin delivers a snap-tight, streamlined brand of heavy alternative rock with occasional detours into the rhythmic funk-metal territory inhabited by Limp Bizkit and Korn.
With strong melodies reminiscent of Staind or Incubus at their most accessible, the Pennsylvania combo makes good use of soaring vocal harmonies and unusual production touches (the piano intro on "Breakdown" and the swirling, phase-shifting guitars on "Believe") to separate itself from the heavy-rock pack. On "Forget It" and the closing ballad "Rain," Breaking Benjamin gets downright New Romantic, suggesting a diversity unusual among its contemporaries.
Breaking Benjamin: Ben Burnley (vocals, guitar); Aaron Fink (guitar); Marcus James (bass guitar); Jeremy Hummel (drums, percussion).

Typical I heard "RAVE" reviews about this album so I had to check it out! To be honest, I wasnt that impressed. I have a 20 other cd's with the same sound that due the job better. Im not pissed I bought the cd, just expected to hear what every one had said about how different they where & how each song sounded nothing like any other song on the cd which was Bull s*#t. Their the 3rd generation of a style that has already been mastered. Submitted by medikman2003 (Germany US Army) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$10.45 It's a testament to the conviction of Breaking Benjamin that two of its members quit another band already signed to a major label to join what was, commercially, much less of a sure thing. SATURATE's success ...
| | Crossfade CD (2004)
We Are Not Alone CD music
$8.99 Shortly before recording this disc, the Columbia, SC-based heavy rock group Crossfade changed its name from the decidedly less genre-appropriate Sugardaddy Superstar. Longtime fans need not worry, though--the band still traffics in the same brand of hard-hitting, melodic neo-grunge that won it a loyal Southern following. Taking ...
| | Seether Disclaimer II CD (2002) Bonus DVD; Deluxe Edition
We Are Not Alone music CDs
$8.99 A cursory listen to DISCLAIMER reveals a debt to such U.S. heavy rock bands as Papa Roach and Drowning Pool, no great shock since Seether producer Jay Baumgardner had previously worked with both of those bands. The surprising part is that this very American-sounding nu-metal band actually comes from South Africa. Their homeland is where the Dave Matthews Band comparisons abruptly end, though. Seether goes for the time-tested power-trio format that's served hard-hitting rock bands in good stead throughout the decades, from Mountain to Nirvana. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Shaun Morgan is at the heart of the group's sound, his angst-ridden lyrics and emotive delivery occasionally suggesting the influence of the aforementioned Kurt Cobain-fronted band. Grunge flavoring to the contrary, though, this is a solidly contemporary band whose sheer sonic force puts them directly in the forefront of circa-2002 heavy rock.

We Are Not Alone CD music
$6.29 Everyone knows Elvis's croon can make even most tired material swoon-worthy, so recordings of the King turning in sweet renditions of holiday favorites like "Blue Christmas," "I'll Be Home for Christmas," and "Silent Night" are must-haves. HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS collects these and more in a gorgeous box set (which looks something like an Elvis lunchbox) that also includes collectibles such as postcards, a guitar-shaped candle, and ...

| | Giant Brain Plume CD (2007)
We Are Not Alone album
$11.99 It makes sense that a trio from Detroit would wish to re-create the constant-forward-momentum vibe of Neu!'s Motorik rock and Kraftwerk's Autobahn, given how both were so inspired by the trance-state engendered by highway hypnosis. Given Detroit's place as one of the key cities of American metal and garage rock, however, it's equally commonsensical that Giant Brain rough up their take on vintage Krautrock with heavy guitar riffs and muscular drumming more akin to vintage Stooges. The five lengthy tracks on Plume unfurl slowly -- "Looper" and "Krauter" alone account for 30-plus minutes of the album's running time -- but implacably, built on riffs that develop into invitingly hypnotic drones. Plume isn't at all the usual fare for the Small Stone label, which usually deals in full-on stoner metal, but it's an intriguing diversion that bodes well for future cross-cultural experiments as more of the stoner metal audience discovers the lysergic possibilities of vintage Krautrock. ~ Stewart Mason
