Mark Nelson, who is Pan American, cannot find a way to leave well-enough alone -- thank goodness. The first two albums under this moniker were organic, strange and beautiful outings with standard instrumentations and various keyboards added for effect. His last, The River Made No Sound got jiggy with a barrage of computer generated effects and sounds almost exclusively. On Quiet City, Nelson brings back the layered electronics, shimmering muffled beats, and striated time and space stretches, and juxtaposes them against upright bass, drums, trumpet, and fugelhorn. As he has done on the early Labradford records, Nelson even sings, making poetic song-like structures of his compositions. The result is a deeply nocturnal, hushed recording that moves in several directions at once. The textures come in waves rather than layers, but they lap at the unconscious rather than in your backbone. They don't swirl so much as undulate, and the various pieces become one dark rainbow body of restrained, humid, sonic inquiry that goes nowhere and everywhere at once. Brilliant. ~ Thom Jurek

Although two exceptional EPs came out between The Troubled Sleep of Piano Magic and Disaffected, an entire year passed -- for the first time since Piano Magic's inception -- without an album-length release. (Piano Magic say this is their sixth proper album, meaning they're probably not counting the Son de Mar score and the two-song A Trick of the Sea.) Glen Johnson's group returns as inspired as ever, turning in a work that matches and occasionally exceeds Low Birth Weight and Artists' Rifles. Some of their other albums have suffered from mild to acute stray-idea syndrome, but they've found a way here to bundle up a number of disparate approaches while keeping it all focused and linear. Along with fellow St. Ann's Parish native Bob Marley, Burning Spear was considered one of the main proponents of reggae when 1976's MAN IN THE HILLS was released. Although "Burning Spear" was used to refer to the vocal trio of Winston Rodney, Rupert Wellington and Delroy Hines, it was Rodney who was rightfully known as Spear (especially since he was the one who borrowed the name from Jomo Kenyatta, hero of Kenyan independence).
Fueled by devotion to Rastafarianism and a keen interest in educating the world about black culture and history, Spear used a thick groove and plenty of horns as the glue for his fourth album. Always a keenly insightful lyricist, Spear used the desert as a metaphor for spiritual barrenness in "Black Soul," while the ocean becomes symbolic of bounty throughout the bubbly "Children." Spear denounces the evils of Babylon (a remake of his 1969 single "Door Peep"), extols the virtues of pacifism ("No More War"), and makes an uplifting call to enlightenment (the flute-driven "People Get Ready"). After recording this roots-reggae classic, Spear severed his ties with independent producer Jack Ruby, along with Wellington and Hines.
