A pioneering black-owned record label, United Records featured many obscure (and a few famous, such as Jimmy Forrest's "Night Train") and rewarding recordings during the 1951-57 period. This excellent sampler features jumping jazz, blues, R&B and gospel performances. Two of the selections are previously unreleased alternate takes and there are also ten numbers that are appearing on CD for the first time. One comes away from this program impressed by both the high quality of the music and the wide range recorded for United. Jazz is represented by baritonist Leo Parker, altoists Chris Woods and Tab Smith, the tenors of Jimmy Coe and Paul Bascomb, and Jimmy Forrest and guitarist Tiny Grimes with some of those performances crossing over into R&B. Also featured in excellent form are Roosevelt Sykes (an exciting alternate version of "Fine and Brown"), Junior Wells, Robert Nighthawk, the multi-instrumental Ray McKinstry (heard on all of the instruments during "Dinah"), the Four Blazes and the Pastels. In reality, all 22 numbers have their exciting moments. In time all of these recordings will certainly be reissued by Delmark on more complete CDs but this is a superior sampler, perfect as an introduction to this vintage music. ~ Scott Yanow

$14.29 Benjamin Daydreamer, whose real name is Harry Benjamin Marinen, grew up in a Christian home in the Swedish countryside. His parents are originally from Finland as well as his grandmother, while his grandfather was from Ukraine. He and his older brother, Leif, were both born in Sweden...His career as a musician began in the early 1980s at the mere age of 10, when he had the opportunity to play the drums in music school. Benjamin got his first drums, a set of red Maxwins, which he enjoyed jamming on while listening with earphones to good Christian artists on old vinyl records...Since graduating from high school he has been working as a caregiver for disabled people, as well as in home healthcare. In the spring of 2007, he completed the registered nursing program and has been working the night shift in a nursing home for patients with dementia since 2005. And now Benjamin has turned his focus to becoming a full-time artist in the music business...Benjamin's mother replaced the old Fazer piano for a KORG poly 800, which became the launching pad for Benjamin´s creative spirit within his genre. This led to his first studio recording at Key Studio in Ulricehamn, in February of 1986. He recorded a song titled "Walk to the Intensity of Light", on which he himself recorded all the tracks manually with the synthesizer, sang and played on Simmons digital drums... It was during this time in his life, his early teenage years, when he decided to accept Jesus and was born again. He was baptized in water and shortly after that he was spiritually confirmed into the body of Christ during a Pentecostal youth camp. The Pentecostal movement was an influence during his growing-up years, and it is through this movement that he has been provided with opportunities for spiritual ...
