| | Blam Caveat Emptor CD Blam Discography of CDs
Just over a year after they released their self-titled debut album, the Blam returned with Caveat Emptor, an album so different from its predecessor that it could make listeners wonder which sound truly is the Blam's. Gone, for the most part, is the peppy, slightly punky power pop of The Blam; in its place is a dreamy, often breezy sound that often suggests a more energetic version of Luna's style. Singer Jerry Adler's soft, slightly detached vocals sound a bit like Dean Wareham or the Church's Steve Kilbey, and the album's often spare, jangly arrangements strengthen comparisons to those bands. When Caveat Emptor does rock out, it does so in a way that's either fuzzier ("Death or Glory") or darker and more angular ("Writing on the Wall") than the way the Blam used to turn up the volume, but these songs do provide a balance to the more atmospheric feel of the rest of the album. Sometimes things get a little too atmospheric: songs like "Everybody" and "How Did the Flies Get In?" are certainly pretty, but they're so soft and gentle that they seem in constant danger of evaporating. However, the most immediate of the quieter songs, such as the title track, "Calm Down," and the lovely "It's Not Personal," show that the Blam can do shimmering pop with more style than bands like Longwave and less melodrama than bands like Elefant. "Elliott," a largely acoustic song, also works well, hinting that the band could also pull off a folk-pop direction. Releasing two albums within such a short time may have diluted the quality of the band's output somewhat, but Caveat Emptor has strengths that The Blam didn't have, and vice versa. The Blam have done good things, and different things, on their first two albums; here's to hoping that the band can focus all of its strengths on its next release. ~ Heather Phares

Caveat Emptor album
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, very modern in a way few mainstream pop albums are in 2009, whether they're products of the American Idol/19 ...

| | Psychedelic States: Florida In The '60S Vol. 1 CD (2000)
Caveat Emptor songs
$11.39 As a continuation of Gear Fab's trawl through the backwaters of the '60s American teen movement, new series Psychedelic States, rather like AIP's mammoth High in the Mid Sixties, focuses on regional band scenes. This, the first volume, investigates mid- to late-'60s music from Florida, collecting together the area's movers and shakers -- many of which have never been compiled. And with 28 songs that take in a huge array of styles, the venture is for the main part very successful. The Canadian Rogues' Northwest punk sound and the Shades' far more polished pop style show that in Florida it wasn't only one style that the local youths took to. "Xcedrin Headache # 69" (Mouse & the Boys), one of the most wigged-out numbers here, is an urgently snarled, drugged-out plea with searing fuzz guitar and a stomping beat. As psychedelic '60s punk goes, it doesn't get any better than this! The obscure Miami outfit the Fewdle Lords take a baroque influence, while the Maundy Quintet excel as purveyors of soft folk-rock with a Byrds feel. The Squiremen's dramatic pièce de résistance ("Who in the World") airs just how the influences of the likes of the Beatles, the Left Banke, and Nazz gave bands who had previously been playing garage rock something to really test their skills with in the latter half of the decade. Their ...
