he classic sounds of mandolin, guitar and mandocello form the core of the Nashville Mandolin Trio, whose dedication to acoustic music is rivaled only by its constant exploration of musical Americana. The trio has performed at Atlanta's Mando-Mania Festival, Nashville's Blair School of Music, the Itinerari Folk Estate Festival in Trento, Italy and Billy Block's Western Beat Barndance. Television appearances include the PBS Production "Blair Recital Hall" and "A Down Home Country Christmas" on TBN. Their recent CD "American Portraits" was released in the spring of 1999.

| | Darius Rucker Learn To Live CD (2008)
American Portraits CD music
$10.29 Although for the rest of his life, underinformed fans of 1990s pop will forever be calling Darius Rucker "Hootie," the former Hootie & the Blowfish singer-songwriter makes his solo debut with a perfectly credible take on mainstream contemporary Nashville country. The laid-back, largely acoustic folk-pop of Hootie & the Blowfish was never that far removed from contemporary country in the first place, so only the fact that Rucker is the first major African-American country star since the heyday of Charley Pride makes the stylistic crossover out of the ordinary. First single "Don't Think I Don't ...

| | Jamey Johnson Dollar CD (2006)
American Portraits album
$6.35 Despite a handsome mug and a beefy build, Nashville newcomer Jamey Johnson proves that he's more than just a "hat act" on his 2006 debut, THE DOLLAR. Johnson's neo-traditionalist bent fares well on these 11 tracks, most of which he wrote himself, or co-wrote. While the lyrical themes--work, love, faith, and partying--will not surprise listeners of contemporary country, the freshness of Johnson's songwriting and the appeal of his ragged baritone may. THE DOLLAR balances between emotionally charged ballads and honky-tonk rockers, and Johnson delivers the goods in both styles, making this a solid first outing ...
| | Reba Mcentire Merry Christmas To You CD (1987)
American Portraits CD music
$5.49 Merry Christmas to You is (naturally) a traditional Christmas album for Reba McEntire, mostly featuring textured acoustic guitar and light percussion (several selections were arranged by McEntire). Alongside tender holiday classics like "Away in a Manger," "O Holy Night," "Silent Night," and "On This Day," she reaches deep into her song bag for "The Christmas Guest" by Grandpa Jones. ~ John Bush

| | Hank Williams Three Hanks: Men With Broken Hearts CD (1996)
American Portraits music CDs
$6.79 MEN WITH BROKEN HEARTS features electronically created collaborations between three generations of the Hank Williams family. Most of the songs are Hank Williams Sr. songs featuring his original vocals, but with new musical tracks and the additional voices of his son and grandson.
Principally recorded at Castle Studio and 16th Avenue Sound, Nashville, Tennessee.
Well, someone had to do it. Three Hanks is exactly that, Hank Williams, Sr., Hank Williams, Jr., and Hank Williams III all together on the same disc, and often on the same track, thanks to the wonders of 21st century digital overdubbing. Produced by Chuck Howard, the dozen songs here, aside from introducing the intriguing talent of Hank III to the world, really don't add much to Hank Sr.'s legacy, or to Hank Jr.'s, either, for that matter. Oh, it's pleasant enough, and even fun sometimes, and Hank Jr.'s ...
