| | Tribute To Tool CD
This Big Eye Records tribute to Tool seems a little slapdash. O.H.M.'s version of "Bottom" is an appropriately vengeful opener, and Sixdeep sounds like a female-fronted 311 on their cover of the Aenima bulldozer "Pushit." But Tool fanatics will recognize Haujobb's "Die Eier von Satan" from the Cleopatra label's 2002 Tool tribute, and what's going on with this set's "Roots of Tool" section? Though it's billed to Jimmy Page, "Wailing Sounds" is actually taken from the campy, screwy 1970 album he did with Londontown hanger-on Lord Sutch called Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends. Then there's "Mexican Sangwich" from Faith No More affiliate Jim Martin, and a solo cut from Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward. There's no denying the influence of Zeppelin, Faith, and Sabbath on the boys in Tool. But chocking the end of this already spotty tribute with songs only tangentially connected to those bands' legacies seems a little suspect. ~ Johnny Loftus

Tribute To Tool album
$21.00 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." Also notable is the inclusion of "May It Be" and a previously unreleased version of "Aníron (I Desire)," both of which originally appeared ...

| | Judas Priest Painkiller CD (1990) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Tribute To Tool album
$6.75 Judas Priest's 1990 release, PAINKILLER, shows the band returning to ferocious metal after such musical detours as 1986's TURBO. It also proved to be the British band's last outing with original singer Rob Halford. Drummer Scott Travis (ex-Racer X) makes his Priest debut here, while the sound and songwriting is comparable to thrash/speed metal.
The album-opening title track is one of Priest's heaviest and greatest songs (brace yourself before it kicks in!), and the band takes no prisoners on such titles as "Hell Patrol" and "A Touch of Evil." An inspired way to close out Halford-era Priest.
At the dawn of the '90s, Judas Priest were in sad shape: out of touch, seemingly creatively bankrupt, coming off the two worst albums of their career, and left for dead by many observers. Trying to right the ship, Priest jettisoned longtime producer Tom Allom and his tinny '80s sound, as well as the serviceable groove drumming of Dave Holland, and brought in veteran metal producer Chris Tsangarides and onetime Racer X skinsman Scott Travis. Most importantly, though, Priest stopped trying to be a stadium act in the midst of ...
| | Atreyu Congregation Of The Damned CD (2009)
Tribute To Tool CD music
$11.65 On their latest effort, Atreyu come with more of the same metalcore that listeners have come to expect from the band. All of the familiar elements are in place, with the alternating screaming/soaring vocals, thundering double bass drumming, and big, crunchy riffage. The difference here is that the band seems to have mellowed out a bit, opting for a more melodic approach. Like their last album, the songs here feel somewhat restrained, like they're just dying to break free of the polished production. The intensity of SUICIDE NOTES and BUTTERFLY KISSES seems to have been put out to pasture, with the songs feeling more deliberately poppy.
On their latest effort, Atreyu come with more of the same metalcore that listeners have come to expect from the band. All of the familiar elements are in place, with the alternating screaming/soaring vocals, thundering double bass drumming, and big, crunchy riffage. The difference here is that the band seems to have mellowed out a bit, opting for a more melodic approach, which is both good and bad. While it's interesting to see a band grow and deviate from its tried and true formula, this album feels a little toothless. The acerbic fire of ...

Tribute To Tool music CDs
$6.15 All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
Joni Mitchell's most controversial album is the infamous MINGUS. A tribute to the legendary jazz bassist of the same name, this is an intriguing meeting of Joni's sultry, burnished vocals and some of the best modern jazz musicians, at the intersection of pop and jazz. Critics in both the rock and jazz worlds unjustly dismissed the record as an attempt by Mitchell to exploit Mingus or to needlessly elevate pop to a more sophisticated level.
Mitchell's voice is well suited to the moody jazz melody of Mingus' "A Chair In The Sky." The melodic comments of ...
