| | Tribute To Tool CD
This Big Eye Records tribute to Tool seems a little slapdash. O.H.M.'s version of "Bottom" is an appropriately vengeful opener, and Sixdeep sounds like a female-fronted 311 on their cover of the Aenima bulldozer "Pushit." But Tool fanatics will recognize Haujobb's "Die Eier von Satan" from the Cleopatra label's 2002 Tool tribute, and what's going on with this set's "Roots of Tool" section? Though it's billed to Jimmy Page, "Wailing Sounds" is actually taken from the campy, screwy 1970 album he did with Londontown hanger-on Lord Sutch called Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends. Then there's "Mexican Sangwich" from Faith No More affiliate Jim Martin, and a solo cut from Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward. There's no denying the influence of Zeppelin, Faith, and Sabbath on the boys in Tool. But chocking the end of this already spotty tribute with songs only tangentially connected to those bands' legacies seems a little suspect. ~ Johnny Loftus

Tribute To Tool album
$17.57 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks ...

Tribute To Tool CD music
$10.65 After the original Stryper lineup (minus bassist Tim Gaines) reunited for 2005's somewhat alternative/nu-metal tinged REBORN, the band made a stylistic return to form with MURDER BY PRIDE. Brimming with harmonized twin guitar leads, big hair metal-approved shout-along hooks, and Michael Sweet's trademark soaring, Dennis DeYoung-esque vocals, the album rivals the best of Styper's `80s output, including the genre-defining TO HELL WITH ...
| | Atreyu Congregation Of The Damned CD (2009)
Tribute To Tool music CDs
$11.65 On their latest effort, Atreyu come with more of the same metalcore that listeners have come to expect from the band. All of the familiar elements are in place, with the alternating screaming/soaring vocals, thundering double bass drumming, and big, crunchy riffage. The difference here is that the band seems to have mellowed out a bit, opting for a more melodic approach. Like their last album, the songs here feel somewhat restrained, like they're just dying to break free of the polished production. The intensity of SUICIDE NOTES and BUTTERFLY KISSES seems to have been put out to pasture, with the songs feeling more deliberately poppy.

| | King Diamond Voodoo CD (1998) Reissue; Remastered
Tribute To Tool album
$11.18 On King Diamond's eighth concept album, the prolific horror rocker hasn't entirely run out of ideas, although the material on Voodoo is generally predictable. Set in New Orleans, the story line is loaded with more witchcraft, haunted houses, and ghosts. The music stays true to form as well; Diamond's cartoonishly ghastly vocals haven't lost any of their bite, long running sideman Andy LaRocque maintains ...

Joni Mitchell's most controversial album is the infamous MINGUS. A tribute to the legendary jazz bassist of the same name, this is an intriguing meeting of Joni's sultry, burnished vocals and some of the best modern jazz musicians, at the intersection of pop and jazz. Critics in both the rock and jazz worlds unjustly dismissed the record as an attempt by Mitchell to exploit Mingus or to needlessly elevate pop to a more sophisticated level.
Mitchell's voice is well suited to the moody jazz melody of Mingus' "A Chair In The Sky." The melodic comments of the masterful Jaco Pastorius' fretless bass weave their way seductively through Joni's melancholy interpretation of "Sweet Sucker Dance." The high point of the album, however, is the funky "The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines" which benefits from Pastorius' gurgling bass groove ...
| | Metallica Load CD (1996)
Tribute To Tool songs
$15.09 The kings of speed metal have never been keen on being labeled, and LOAD, which follows up the 1991 mega-hit METALLICA, is a surprising pastiche of sonic fury. Metallica still rocks hard. James Hetfield's lyrics are still full of venom and anger, and the music still could scare small children. But the band is ready to show off other sides of its craft. "Hero Of The Day" sounds like an R.E.M. song, albeit a heavy one, with its tender beginning and ending confluence ...
