The companion piece to the 1962-1966 singles compilation, this set (often called "the blue album," as opposed to its chronological predecessor "the red album"), brings together the Beatles best known songs from 1967 through 1970. The Beatles were fiercely, relentlessly experimental during these years, and the swirling, visionary soundscapes of "Strawberry Fields Forever," which opens the collection, sets the tone with its effects-heavy production and backward tape loops. John Lennon's psychedelic songwriting, which emphasized crystalline melodies and surreal wordplay, can be heard on tracks like "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" and "Across the Universe."
Paul McCartney's fascination with English music hall and novelty numbers is clear on "Penny Lane" and "Ob-la-Di, Ob-la-Da," and the set also has some of his finest ballads, including the mega-hits "Let It Be" and "Hey Jude." George Harrison emerged as a fine songwriting talent during these years with "Something" and "Here Comes the Sun." Yet despite evidence of their diverging individual directions, the Beatles still rock as a band on cuts like "Revolution." (The set includes the single versions of "Revolution," "Lady Madonna," and "Hey Jude"). Back in the seventies, it seemed that every rock band needed to have a live concert film to commemorate their triumphant treks across America. Led Zeppelin were no exception and THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME is a chronicle of Led Zeppelin on tour. Although the uninspired visual aspects of the film fail to capture the power of Led Zeppelin at their mid-seventies peak, the album manages to convey their live prowess. The twenty-six minute, hypnotic version of "Dazed and Confused" works much better here than in the film, where movie patrons would head to the concession stand ten minutes into the song. "Whole Lotta Love" gets a similar extended treatment and the results are equally impressive.

Part of a conceptually unified series of albums put out in 2004 and 2005 by Kufala Recordings, Salton Songs is subtitled Electric Violin Music. It's the most conventionally pop-oriented disc of the lot, setting the steely whine of Chris Murphy's subtly electrified lead instrument against synth-heavy instrumental backings that borrow about equally from the not-as-dissimilar-as-one-might-think world of '70s progressive rock and present-day downtempo electronica. Murphy's solos on the album's most immediately catchy track, "Reactor," might put the historically minded listener in mind of the more rococo edges of European psychedelia and prog, but the dance-oriented beats and buzzing synths are thoroughly up to date. Similarly, the opening "Shallow Water" owes as much to the Orb's ambient house grooves as "Cane Sugar" does to David Cross' frenetic violin on Larks' Tongues in Aspic-era King Crimson. Although the guitars and keyboards throughout Salton Songs are heavily treated with reverb and other forms of sonic processing, Murphy's violins are left relatively unadorned throughout the album other than the occasional judicious application of echo, which gives the album a curious tension between the traditional and the experimental, an edge that helps put over songs that might otherwise slide too far over the line into fusionesque easy listening. ~ Stewart Mason
