Teedra Moses's debut has an undeniably winning charm in its subtle, after-hours ambience. Steering well clear of the vocal gymnastics of many of her peers, Moses instead relies on the natural pleading quality that's inherent in her voice. The production, courtesy of Roots producer Paul Poli, never overwhelms, allowing Moses to float enigmatically through a set of songs that range from the relaxed, world-wise "No More Tears" to the poppy title track. The singer performs the seductive boudoir symphony of "Rescue Me," and then conjures Alicia Keys amidst the luxuriant string arrangement of "Take Me," a duet with Raphael Saadiq. Moses is capable of stronger stuff, too--"Outta My Head" is a bass-heavy dance-floor stomper that references the 1960s hit of the same name, while "Caution" proves that she knows both how to evoke '80s soul and make it her own.
Personnel include: Teedra Moses (vocals); Raphael Saadiq (vocals, guitar, bass instrument); Jadakiss (rap vocals); Mac Robinson (guitar, keyboards, bass instrument, percussion); Kelvin Wooten (guitar, keyboards, drums); Gerald Clayton (keyboards).
Rolling Stone (p.108) - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 - "Moses has a cheery, twee voice, and on her debut she uses it to sass the men in her life." Teedra Moses Complex Simplicity Songs Complex Simplicity Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews I waited... I waited for her debut after hearing her on Saadiq's "Chic" in 2003. Her album came out and I must've been sleep because I didn't know! Classy !! Agree with everything Jayboy said. One of the best LP's of 2004 along with Van Hunt and Saadiq's. There's a song for everyone on this as it covers a lot of ground from club to sultry, Jazz tinged to straight up soul. I hope her next release will be in the same vein. Buy this!!!!!!!!! Complex Simplicity
$6.79 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns ...
| | Brian Mcknight Gemini CD (2005)
Complex Simplicity
$10.65 On that latter track, the silken-voiced balladeer intones "it's hard to breathe without you, girl, and baby, that's a fact" with an earthen, vulnerable sincerity that typifies every McKnight composition. It's that mature connection to his songs that places McKnight in the category of the finest contemporary R&B crooners. He drives that point home on "Grown Man Business," as he touts the virtues of the reliable, refined man over the sweetest of soul beats. Brian McKnight has been turning heads since he was ...
| | Mind Of Mannie Fresh CD (2004)
Complex Simplicity
$12.79 Familiar to most of the rap world as half of Big Tymers, Mannie Fresh was active in hip-hop for years before dropping his solo debut, THE MIND OF MANNIE FRESH, in 2004. While Fresh didn't shy away from the mic as a member of the aforementioned Southern duo, his role was primarily as a DJ and an expert beat creator (a prolific one, at that--he's the driving force behind almost the entire Cash Money catalogue). While fellow Big Tymer (and Cash Money founder) Bryan "Baby" Williams enlisted a number of major artists for his first record (as Baby AKA the #1 Stunna), Mannie Fresh boldly lets his voice stand on its own, with David Banner being the only high-profile guest star here.
On THE MIND OF MANNIE ...
| | Alien vs. Predator DVD (2004) Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled; DTS Sound
Complex Simplicity
$9.69 When audiences caught a glimpse of an alien skull mounted in the trophy cabinet of a Predator in the 1990 film PREDATOR 2, it seemed a franchise was about to be born. Sure enough, comic book artists immediately seized on the possibilities suggested by the brief scene, and a number of skirmishes between the deadly foes were played out on the printed page. Fans have had to endure a lengthy wait for a cinematic match-up, but writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson (EVENT HORIZON) has finally delivered the blood-splattered goods in ALIEN VS. PREDATOR. Set in the near future, a team of archaeologists lead by Charles Wiedland (Lance Henriksen, returning for more ALIEN action after appearances in the second and third films) ventures towards an inexplicable "hot zone" detected in Antarctica. Joined by Alexa Woods (Sanaa Lathan) and the requisite amount of human fodder for the otherworldly creatures to feast ...
