Revolution album
$19.34 Westfield, MA-based metalcore kings Killswitch Engage's fifth full-length album (and second eponymous release) was co-produced by Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Mastodon) resulting in the group's most commercially viable collection of progressive/thrash/emo-metal to date. Where 2006's AS DAYLIGHT DIES hinted at an accelerated focus on the more melodic aspects of extreme metal, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE cements the notion. After a typically brutal opener that epitomizes the band's penchant for scorching death metal verses and sweeping, melodious choruses, the quintet spits out the radio-ready "Starting Over." Flanked by dual guitar leads that echo classic Iron Maiden shot through with a truly great vocal take from lead singer Howard Jones (who sounds remarkably like a classically trained Trent Reznor throughout the album), it's one of the disc's finest moments. The remainder of the record follows a significantly different template, trading tight machine-gun riffs ("Save Me," "A Light in a Darkened World") for angst-fueled midtempo dirges ("Lost," "This Is Goodbye") that might disappoint fans who feel that the punk-infused slow-burn post-hardcore albums like ALIVE or JUST BREATHING and END OF HEARTACHE are the barometers for which all future endeavors must be compared.
Special Edition
Personnel: Howard Jones (vocals); Adam Dutkiewicz, Joel Stroetzel (guitars); Mike D'Antonio (bass instrument); Justin Foley (drums).
| | Dream Theater - Metropolis 2000: Scenes From New York DVD (2000)
Revolution CD music
$19.39 Dream Theater are an influential "prog-rock" band who have made their interpretation of the genre unique by adding a twist of thrash metal to it. Directed by the band's drummer, Mike Portnoy, this video features the band's landmark August 2000 concert appearance at New York City's Roseland Ballroom, during which they played their entire acclaimed album, SCENES FROM A MEMORY.

| | Queensryche American Soldier CD (2009)
Revolution music CDs
$15.65 AMERICAN SOLDIER, Queensr˙che's 12th studio release, culminates in a full-album concept, similar to their 1988 rock opera masterpiece, OPERATION: MINDCRIME. The primary difference is that this time around, Queensr˙che are not weaving a tale. Rather, they recount and incorporate the emotions and experiences of members of America's armed forces, weaving anecdotes by veterans from World War II all the way through Iraq into a metallic tapestry of palpable intensity. AMERICAN SOLDIER is a moving tribute to the endurance, courage, and discipline of enlisted men throughout history.
Personnel: Geoff Tate (vocals, horns); Damon Johnson, Kelly Gray, Michael Wilton (guitar); Randy Gane (keyboard); Ed Jackson (bass guitar); Scott Rockenfield (drums).
Recording information: The Office (2008).
| | Dokken Lightning Strikes Again CD (2008)
Revolution songs
$15.89 Dokken always stood apart from the typical 1980s pop metal din, combining solid musicianship and well-crafted songwriting. While the current incarnation of the band does not include original members guitarist George Lynch and bassist Jeff Pilson, LIGHTNING STRIKES AGAIN is a long overdue return to form. Current guitarist Jon Levin expertly recreates the nearly inimitable Lynchisms that defined the classic Dokken sound. Fans of 1985's UNDER LOCK AND KEY and 1987's BACK FOR THE ATTACK are sure to appreciate this exciting new era of a great band.
Dokken: Mick Brown (vocals, drums); Don Dokken (vocals); Jon Levin (guitar); Barry Sparks (bass guitar).
| | Tool Aenima CD (1996)
Revolution album
$15.65 AENIMA was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package. "Aenima" won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
On its second full-length album, this hard-rocking quartet delivers 15 tracks of unrelenting aggression and focused intensity. Rather than overwhelm with huge sonic washes of guitar and booming drums, Tool employs a propulsive, snaky approach that makes use of undulating rhythms and clipped, percussive guitar riffs. Maynard James Keenan's vocals follow suit, opting for a heavily processed slow burn instead of the post-grunge bellow favored by so many hard-rock bands. Instead of flailing uncontrollably in all directions, the group's raw, energetic sound is tightly directed for maximum impact.
On songs like "Stinkfist," Keenan rails against injustice while the band churns mercilessly behind him. There is very little humor or light in Tool's worldview (except for song titles like "Hooker With A Penis"); these are songs of painstakingly articulated angst, and they are delivered in an earnest, deadpan manner. These fierce rockers are dead set on making their point, and make it they do, with all the bloodshed and carnage that entails.
Additional personnel includes: Marko Fox (vocals); Eban Schletter (organ); Chris Pittman (synthesizer); D.B. (keyboards); Bill Hicks.
Recorded at Ocean Way, Hollywood, California and The Hook, North Hollywood, California.
Tool: Maynard James Keenan (vocals); Adam Jones (guitar); Justin Chancellor (bass); Danny Carey (drums).
| | Dream Theater Images And Words CD (1992)
Revolution CD music
$11.19 While continuing to improve its musical chops and explore more progressive territory, Dream Theater reached its mainstream apex with 1992's IMAGES AND WORDS. Here the group capably combined prog-rock high-mindedness with metal crunch and commercial accessibility on the opening track "Pull Me Under," helping to snare an audience big enough to push this album past gold sales status.
What makes IMAGES AND WORDS stand out is the fluid marriage of shred tactics, soaring vocals, and catchy hooks, all wrapped up in a polished studio sound. Fans can argue whether this is the band's best, but there is no denying the power of epic, engaging songs like "Take the Time," "Under a Glass Moon," and "Metropolis - Part I," a track that foreshadowed the 1999 outing SCENES FROM A MEMORY. Following IMAGES AND WORDS, Dream Theater became increasingly complex in its approach, to varying degrees of success, but this album represents a time when the ensemble brought progressive metal to the masses with little compromise.
Recorded at Bear Tracks Studio, Suffern, New York and The Hit Factory, New York, New York between October & December 1991.
Dream Theater: James La Brie (vocals); John Petrucci (guitar); Kevin Moore (keyboards); John Myung (bass); Mike Portnoy (drums, percussion).
Additional personnel: Jay Beckenstein (soprano saxophone).
