Definitive Act album
$8.59 Screaming Trees' first release was originally a 1985 cassette-only offering from the nascent K Records. Released on CD in 1989 by SST Records (the Trees' self-released second album, 1986's CLAIRVOYANCE, remains out of print), OTHER WORLDS can't help but sound odd to listeners more familiar with their later work.
These six songs are mid-'80s Paisley Underground-style psych-pop not far removed from the early albums by the Dream Syndicate or Green On Red, or even the first couple of R.E.M. albums. Less heavy than later albums like UNCLE ANESTHESIA and more drone-oriented (especially on the hypnotic closer "Now Your Mind Is Next to Mine"), the material is that of a young band with more ideas and energy than direction, but its endearing try-anything spirit ...

Definitive Act songs
$13.49 Primus' second release (but first studio album), 1990's FRIZZLE FRY, remains one of this psycho-noise-funk-freakout band's finest. Whereas most other funk-like hard rock bands at the time came off half-baked and silly, Primus were one of the genre's masters (bassist Les Claypool had done hard time in funk/jazz cover bands prior to Primus). Several songs on FRIZZLE FRY had already been issued on the in-concert SUCK ON THIS, but dazzling renditions of "John the Fisherman," "Ground Hog's Day," "Pudding Time," and "Harold of the Rocks" outdo the originals. Add to it such newer tracks as "To Defy the Laws of Tradition," "Too Many Puppies," and "Mr. Knowitall," and you have the Primus second ...

| | English Beat Special Beat Service CD (1982) Reissued
Definitive Act music CDs
$9.85 SPECIAL BEAT SERVICE was the English Beat's third and final album. Unlike the high-spirited ska-pop of the band's debut, or its reggae- and dub-flavored second album, SPECIAL BEAT SERVICE is a catch-all effort, featuring a wide variety of styles that range from the samba-flavored pop of "I Confess" to the raw toasting of "Spar Wid Me."
SPECIAL BEAT SERVICE features many of the English Beat's finest performances. The album's centerpiece is the infectious "Save It for Later," a simple three-chord pop song that floats on a bed of chiming rhythm guitars, churning cellos, and a buoyant sax solo from the band's 60 year-old sax player, Saxa. Other highlights include the pulsating ska-pop of "Sole Salvation" (which recalls the sound that band members David Steele and Andy Cox would explore in their next band, the Fine Young Cannibals) and "End of the Party," a gorgeous ballad that gives the group a chance to show off its ability to craft delicate, emotionally charged pop. While not the English Beat's finest moment (that honor ...
| | Trio Da Da Da CD (1997) (Import) Germany
Definitive Act songs
$16.09 They may have been brought back to life by an automobile ad on TV, but stranger things have happened in the pop world. If you were clubbing or listening to rock radio in the early '80s, you probably remember the first time you heard "Da Da Da (I Don't Love You You Don't Love Me Aha Aha Aha)." It's a simple but strangely addictive song; three guitar chords, a junky Casio keyboard, and that's it. The other songs here are much the same brand of Dadaistic, ultra-primitive techno-pop. "Boom Boom" follows the formula, a few well-chosen chords and some deadpan vocalizing. No one was ever sure if Trio was making an artistic statement with their minimalist approach, or if they just didn't know any other chords, but ...

Great follow up. I've only heard of this band 1 full year ago this month. I am a big fan of their previous album "the ultimate escape". This album, in my opinion is much better then their previous efforts. I Love the song "4 robots...","safe song", "My Machete". This album is worth checking out. This is the only girl fronted band that I love. Submitted by eldude9482 (Whittier, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
