An all-star cast assists Maynard Ferguson in this disco-tinged big-band outing. Ferguson's trademark trumpet playing is featured in all its screaming glory, and Mark Colby contributes a couple of high-energy sax solos. "Primal Scream" and "Invitation" sound as though they were lifted right off the mid-'70s disco dancefloor, complete with T.S.O.P.-type strings and pulsing rhythms. "Pagliacci," too, has the disco beat pounding underneath a Jay Chattaway adaptation of an operatic melody, with Bobby Militello featured on an energetic, overblown flute solo. Chick Corea's "The Cheshire Cat Walk" sounds like latter-day Return to Forever, as Corea's synth trades licks with Ferguson's horn over a familiar RTF rhythmic/chordal bassline sequence. The final cut, Eric Gale's "Swamp," stands out because of its reggae beat. This album was an obvious attempt to jump on the disco-funk bandwagon, and serves as a well-played, though dated, document of that era. ~ Jim Newsom

Primal Screaming Solos Mark Colby's tenor solo on Primal Scream is a real winner. The solo interplay between Maynard and Chic Corea (on synthesizer) on Cheshire Cat Walk is absolutely tense, wild and exciting. Bobby Miltello's flute solo on Pagliacci is First-Class. One of the most exciting Ferguson recordings of his band(s) from the 70's. Submitted by saxboubler (South San Francisco, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Primal Maynard If you're not familiar with Maynard's music, "Primal Scream" is a great place to start. The closing song alone, "Swamp," is worth the price of admission. Submitted by Quint (West Boylston, MA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Primal Scream album
$10.49 Maynard Ferguson's version of "Birdland" from this LP was a bit of a hit and he fares fairly well on "Stella by Starlight" and "Over the Rainbow," but overall this typically commercial Columbia album is of lesser interest. MF, at the height of his popularity, was clearly looking for a hit, which is why he recorded "Theme from Battlestar Galactica" and roughly half of the poppish material on this rather forgettable effort. The trumpeter/bandleader would record worse albums than this LP, but this one is weak enough. ~ Scott Yanow
Popular. A big seller, but weak from the jazz standpoint. ~ Ron Wynn

| | Maynard Ferguson Hot CD (1979) Reissued
Primal Scream CD music
$10.49 Hot could be the absolute worst of trumpeter Maynard Ferguson's '70s recordings. It's not just that it contains more over the top versions of theme songs -- "Rocky II Disco" anyone? -- and generally vomitive dancefloor-ready production, but more to the point, 'ol MF just doesn't sound good. His chops, long overworked by years of obscenely high trumpet squealing, are beginning to let him down. The problem is particularly glaring on the "Gospel John" reworking "Gabriel," in which Ferguson "fracks" and plays out of tune more than once. Beyond his generally tired-sounding performance, the album feels rushed and features a lousy mixed-bag track selection. ...

Primal Scream album
$16.79 Jazz Oracle's second volume of Paramount Hot Dance Obscurities transports the listener back to the years 1928-1932, when deep within "recording laboratories" in Chicago, IL and Grafton, WI, about 15 different regional dance bands were hard at work making 78 rpm phonograph records soon to be released to the public on the Broadway, Challenge, and Paramount labels. For sheer variety, this is one of the most richly stocked compilations in the entire Jazz Oracle catalog. The Wisconsin U Skyrockets' song titles are enough to reel in the curious, for who could resist "Slow Beef," "Dizzy Corners," or "The Postage Stomp"? Note also versions of Duke Ellington's "Black and Tan Fantasy," Fats Waller's "Keeping Out of Mischief Now," George Gershwin's "Lady Be Good," and possibly Irving Berlin's shortest song title, "Me." In addition to the Skyrockets, the lineup consists of the Checker Box Boys; reedman Art Krueger & His Columbians; Isa Foster & Her Ambassadors; vocalist Glen Leitzke (or Lietzke)'s Midnight Serenaders; Bud Spaight's Harmony Kings; trumpeter and violinist Billy Stennett & His Carolina Stompers; the Smyth-West Orchestra, and the orchestras of Joe Gumin, Glen Lyte, Aaron Steel, saxophonist/clarinetist Bill Garsen, Doc Wilson, Bob Hartman, and saxophonist/clarinetist Sig Heller. The chances are slim that anyone will recognize any of the instrumentalists in these bands (more than half of them remain unidentified) and the vocalists are ...
