| | Dave Douglas Bow River Falls CD (2004)
Book Of Silk music CDs
$14.75 A true collaborative effort, BOW RIVER FALLS features playing, composing, and arranging by trumpeter Dave Douglas, clarinetist Louis Sclavis, cellist Peggy Lee, and drummer/programmer Dylan Van Der Schyff. Recorded during Douglas's residence at the Banff Jazz Workshop in Alberta, Canada (where the other musicians were guest faculty), the session was cut in an afternoon with minimal rehearsal, so a feeling of spontaneity prevails. The music, atmospheric and free, is full of vigorous instrumental interplay and expressionist gestures.
The opener, Steve Lacy's "Blinks," has a bop-influenced head that gives way to a chorus of anthropomorphic squeals and bleeps. This pattern ...
| | Bill Frisell Unspeakable CD (2004)
Book Of Silk songs
$15.89 On UNSPEAKABLE, Bill Frisell blends his distinctively lush, cerebral guitar style with the easy feel of his 1990s Americana-themed albums and a bit of the avant-garde sensibility of his '80s work, while never directly referencing either of these phases. In fact, the overall sound of UNSPEAKABLE is something new for Frisell--with a few notable exceptions, the record leans toward groove-heavy jams. The presence of horns, Adam Dorn's synthesizer, and the 858 Strings (a violin/viola/cello trio employed throughout the album for accent and effect) brings to mind, at times, the orchestrated, cinematic funk of '70s-era Isaac Hayes ("White Fang"), and, at others, '60s lounge music ("Del Close").
But this is not to say that Frisell has discarded his trademark avant-chamber sensibility. On "D. Sharpe" and "Gregory C.," he creates deeply introspective, atmospheric ...
| | Dave Douglas Mountain Passages CD (2005)
Book Of Silk album
$14.45 Inspired in part by the region's local Ladino music, Douglas's compositions are by turns stately, cacophonous, elegant, complex, folksy, elegiac, and funky. The instrumentation, consisting of drums, tuba, cello, sax, clarinet, and trumpet, makes for a particularly unique blend--the ensemble sounds like a cross between an avant-garde classical group and a drunken marching band. As usual, Douglas blurs the line between post-bop and ...

| | Grant Green His Majesty King Funk/Up With Donald Byrd CD (1995)
Book Of Silk songs
$12.69 Recorded in New York, New York on May 26, 1965. Originally released on Verve (8627).
This special collection contains both the classic Grant Green album HIS MAJESTY KING FUNK and trumpeter Donald Byrd's UP WITH DONALD BYRD. Both are treasured recordings by two stellar artists who were at the head of their class in the mid '60s. Green's portion is a rousing quintet session that features the young organist Larry Young, underrated tenor man Harold Vick, renowned percussionist Candido Camero, and the groovy drummer Ben Dixon. As the title indicates, this is a delightfully funky session that features such danceable cuts as Green's "The Selma March," Dixon's solid "The Cantaloupe Woman," and the energetic "Daddy Grapes."
Byrd's UP is an equally exciting, but more pop-oriented, session. Along with Byrd, Jimmy Heath, Kenny Burrell, a young Herbie Hancock, Bob Cranshaw, and Grady Tate is a group of unidentified vocalists that contribute both lyrics and melodic backgrounds to mixed effect. Notable are the performances of Hancock's "Blind Man, Blind Man" and "Cantaloupe Island" and John Lee Hooker's "Boom, Boom." Also included are some eye-brow-raising readings of such pop ...
