Following in the pattern of their previous releases, on Tin Hat Trio's fourth album, Book of Silk, the trio of violin, accordion, and guitar traipse through haunted saloon doors and across rainy Italian piazzas. Skirting the line between jazz, acoustic music, and contemporary composition, Tin Hat Trio's earthy sonic explorations seem like something from the turn of the century, but they leave it unclear as to which century they are referring. Could be 1800, could be a century yet to come. While their songs would never be mistaken for pop tunes, previous releases have kept a real ear toward structured melody, often offering "the hook" buried deep within their meandering tune, but Book of Silk seems to drift even further out than anything before. Gone is Willie Nelson singing "Willow Weep for Me," but in his place are gauzy soundscapes and textural ghost stories, occasionally discordant and nearly always beautiful. The dobro-and-tuba-driven "Things That Might Have Been" is a cinematic piece perfect for a film about juggling, while the opening track "The Loneliest Night" sums up the group's ability to be haunting, endearing, and thought-provoking all at the same time. The album culminates with a charming chamber piece gently sung by violinist Carla Kihlstedt which serves as the perfect lullaby, lovingly tucking the album in for a good night's sleep. ~ Zac Johnson

Book Of Silk Music Review

5 stars Better Yet
I first heard THT at a San Francisco Jazz Festival concert 2 years, and being immediately taken by their music, I bought all their earlier CD's. Book of Silk stands on the shoulders of their earlier works by not repeating them, but by further developing their sophisticated vision. The disceptively simple array of instruments are superbly played and very well recorded. To those unfamiliar with THT's music it may at first appear spare and measured, if not unjazz-like but listening patience will reveal unexptected and expertly delivered chromatic complexity effortlessly interweaved with rhythmic vitality. The music defies catagorization and is unarguably of the highest order.

His Majesty King Funk/Up With Donald Byrd
Grant Green His Majesty King Funk/Up With Donald Byrd CD  (1995)

Book Of Silk songs
CD $11.05  4 stars Audio Samples
Recorded in New York, New York on May 26, 1965. Originally released on Verve (8627). This special collection contains both the classic Grant Green album HIS MAJESTY KING FUNK and trumpeter Donald Byrd's UP WITH DONALD BYRD. Both are treasured recordings by two stellar artists who were at the head of their class in the mid '60s. Green's portion is a rousing quintet session that features the young organist Larry Young, underrated tenor man Harold Vick, renowned percussionist Candido Camero, and the groovy drummer Ben Dixon. As the title indicates, this is a delightfully funky session that features such danceable cuts as Green's "The Selma March," Dixon's solid "The Cantaloupe Woman," and the energetic "Daddy Grapes." Byrd's UP is an equally exciting, but more pop-oriented, session. Along with Byrd, Jimmy Heath, Kenny Burrell, a young Herbie Hancock, Bob Cranshaw, and Grady Tate is a group of unidentified vocalists that contribute both lyrics and melodic backgrounds to mixed effect. Notable are the performances of Hancock's "Blind Man, Blind Man" and "Cantaloupe Island" and John Lee Hooker's "Boom, Boom." Also included are some eye-brow-raising readings of such pop hits as "House Of The Rising Sun" and "See, See, Rider." In all, both collections fill a solid spot in the catalog of two stellar artists. Includes liner notes by Peter Leitch and Bill Milkowski. Digitally remastered by Gary J. Mayo (Polygram Studios). Recorded at A & R Recording, New York, New York on November 2, 3 & 6, 1964 and at the Van ...

Recording and performing together since the late '70s, Gene Bertoncini and Michael Moore once more undertake the daunting task of making a guitar-bass duet session attractive to listeners without being boring or maudlin. Like their earlier efforts, Two in Time successfully fills the bill. The interesting play list, with a balanced mix of slow and up-tempo tunes, contributes much to making this a satisfying ...
