It's impossible to believe that punk-era music this rock, this raw, this heartfelt and this good has been buried for near twenty years. Like a new wave Jonathan Richman, Revelons leader Gregory Lee Pickard gets to the soul of the teenage rock song in structure and vocal tone, although his abstract lyrics points to something much artier. "97 Tears" sets the template for the Cars while "My Town" shows what could have happened if a young Edge played guitar for Joy Division. Of course, there's little need for imaginary players when Fred Perry of Television and Jay Dee Dougherty or Patti Smith Group are your backing band. This disc compiles a grab bag of known cuts, studio session and live recordings, although the primal urgency of even the band's best quality recordings means that the difference between session and stage is minimal. But even if these songs existed only on a cracked and melted 78 RPM record, they would still be worth your attention. ~ Joshua Glazer

| | Prurient Black Vase CD (2005)
Anthology
$13.15 Pitched somewhere between S&M fests -- a chunk of the album art might as well be Merzbow approximations if not direct outtakes -- and instrumental abuse that will prompt tinnitus checks while any dogs in the area dance wildly about, Black Vase shows that it just needs a day for Prurient to do what it does. Quite literally -- the whole album was recorded at a one-day session, with sole Prurient member Dominick Fernow occasionally helped by engineer Kris Lapke on drums and related beats. "Roman Shower" demonstrates that it's not only possible to create "ambient" music that irritates, but that even at low volume high-pitched squeals are just plain obnoxious -- and that to keep it going for 15 minutes is as perfect a way to find out just who will have the patience to listen to the rest of the album and who will run away screaming. At ...
| | Hospitals I've Visited The Island Of Jocks And Jazz CDs (2005)
Anthology
$12.95 Following up a covers EP with a second album of all-original songs, the Hospitals embrace the noise-via-Load Records aesthetic through, on the face of it, expected ways. Unconventional/"ugly" mixes, the blunt art-yet-not cover art and design, aggro-spacticism, and so forth. But the flip side of the noise approach has always been a sometimes subliminal fascination with silence and space as the counterpart, and that element, plus a similarly low-key catchiness, is what makes this album stand out a bit from the crowd. Adam Stonehouse's drumming is often a massively rumbling rampage but is rarely messy, but it's his singing that's arguably the band's secret weapon. Often swathed in reverb, he sings but most of the time doesn't scream, sounding more like a bemused, slightly stoned observer ...

| | Drunk Horse Adult Situations CD (2003)
Anthology
$12.95 Drunk Horse's third album, Adult Situations, is another mixed bag from a band that's way more artistically ambitious than just about every other band in the retro '70s hard rock sub-genre. They're also way smarter than most bands mining this same territory, and, as an unfortunate side effect of that, seemingly more ironic -- and less committed to letting their music stand on its own -- than most of those bands. Throughout this album, their bluesy, riff-based rock tunes draw on a range of familiar influences -- the James Gang's "Funk #49," Humble Pie, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and early Allman Brothers -- as well as slightly less-commonplace ones such as Santana (see the Latin-tinged "Company Man") and even the jazz-rock of mid-period Steely Dan. They do a great job of taking these influences and twisting them around into songs that are, for the most part, quite a bit more involving and complex than you'd expect from such a band: for example, check out the convoluted instrumental breakdowns on "Wildlife" or the stuttering odd-time riff on "Ascension Strut," which is probably the standout track. The production, courtesy of fellow analog purist Tim Green of the Fucking Champs, is also excellent. The main drawback to this album, then, would be the lyrics. While Adult Situations is not a concept album like their previous effort, Tanning Salon, the band's attempts to shoehorn ...

$13.49 "Yo Dre, I don't mean to annoy ya/But you ain't no doctor, and I'm a lawyer/And I'll destroy ya" -- strong words from a gang of Latino-Jewish smartypants from Brooklyn, but they serve their purpose. On Agua Pa' la Gente, the Hoodios' ...
