Alone among the many compilations of Hank Williams's venerable recordings, ALONE AND FORSAKEN focuses on the country icon's dark-night-of-the-soul material. Williams was a well-rounded songwriter capable of devotional ballads, devout spirituals, and light-hearted novelties, but he really excelled at the kind of songs that allowed him to bare his troubled soul. The ill-fated Williams led a 29-year life that made Kurt Cobain's look like a cakewalk. The keening twang of his voice bespeaks untold depths of pain and despair as he mourns a broken marriage (the title cut), regrets his wayward lifestyle ("Ramblin' Man"), and stares loneliness dead in the eye ("Weary Blues from Waitin'").
This expertly compiled disc features both justified classics and less-familiar tunes, but they all bear a weight that marks Williams as the spiritual father of any subsequent singer-songwriter who ever explored the dark side, from Leonard Cohen to Jim Morrison. While Williams's natural sense of humor does come out amidst all the existential angst, and there are a couple of hymn-like pleas to the savior, this is heavy, uncompromising stuff; some of the most haunting, powerful songs ever written, period.
