While very short (barely over 30 minutes) and not on par with its exceptional predecessor, SO FAR helped to solidify Megadeth's standing as one of speed metal's leading acts. "Anarchy in the U.S.A.," a reworking of the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the U.K.," proved popular among MTV's metal set but doesn't come close to matching the original's spiteful power. "502" (the L.A.P.D. code for driving intoxicated), the venomous "Liar," a tribute to Metallica's late bassist Cliff Burton ("In My Darkest Hour"), the anti-censorship "Hook In Mouth," and the lethal one-two punch of "Into the Lungs of Hell" and "Set the World Afire" fare much better.

Following the release of 1986's heavy metal classic PEACE SELLS BUT WHO'S BUYING?, half of Megadeth's original line-up abruptly split. Guitarist Chris Poland and drummer Gar Samuelson parted, leaving the band in the hands of guitarist/singer Dave Mustaine and bassist Dave Ellefson. Despite the fact that the two remaining Megadeth members had become addicted to hard drugs, they wasted little time in finding replacements in drummer Chuck Behler and guitarist Jeff Young. This second lineup lasted just long enough to issue a third Megadeth album, 1988's SO FAR, SO GOOD, SO WHAT!

Additional Tracks

Megadeth: Dave Mustaine (vocals, guitar); Jeff Young (guitar, acoustic guitar); David Ellefson (bass guitar, background vocals); Chuck Behler (drums, percussion).

4 stars One that needed a remastering
The original SFSGSW is a good album. It also has its own sound, which I describe as chorused (referring to the over-chorused guitars). The songs on the album are good, nothing special, and certainly not close to Peace Sells or Rust in Peace. The remaster contains no new tracks, only some of the original mixes as bonus tracks. Dave has messed with the mixes on the album, which is good for the most part as you can now hear lead parts you couldn't before. The chorused guitar sound is completely gone (can be good and bad), and so the album sounds a little stripped down. I felt something was missing the first time I listened to Into the Lungs of Hell, but it was just the lack of chorusing. The only downside to this album is that the guitar part is almost completely quiet during the police sequence in 502, which is jarring the first time you hear it. For this song I'd recommend the original. Overall, buy this album if you like the songs on it, as the improved sound is very worth the $12.

3 stars Not like the original... so what?
I bought the original release on cassette back in 1988. I bought this version on CD because it was Remixed and Remastered. Wow, was it ever! Some of the remix falls so flat, I thought my EQ was going. Listen to the Paul Lani mix of Into The Lungs Of Hell and Set The World Afire. Far superior to the remix in my opinion. The texturing and spatial layering (much more than a simple chorus effect)is quite nice indeed. Then listen to the remix (tracks 1 & 2). Hello? Where the hell did the cool layered guitar effects and such go? Don't get me wrong, the Paul Lani mixes are still not quite as good as the original "final" mix by Michael Wagener, but still much better than the crap Dave Mustaine passes for a good remix. He does thank them both for the hard work they put into their respective mixes, and admits it was a very difficult album on which to work, so that's cool. But still, this remix is just blah. On 502, Michael Wagener's mix clearly put's Dave through a megaphone effect when he states "Pull over s#!thead. This is the cops." On this remix though, Dave sounds like he is just pinching his nose as he delivers that line. MW's mix of Into The Lungs Of Hell also seems to delete most of the trumpet crap (at least the flourishes) at the beginning of the song, which really makes an even more shocking impression when hearing the remix (am I listening to a Megadeth album or watching an episode of "Red Dwarf"?). The whole thing is just a lesser release. I laughed when I heard the first verse of Hook In Mouth while listening to this remix ("little man with a big eraser, changing history"). I would recommend the original over this release (good luck finding it). Songs are well written and performed though. Songs: 5 stars. Remix: 2.5 stars. Overall: 3 stars. I give the original release 5 stars.

3 stars IT WAS ALRIGHT
I Thought The Best Songs On This Album Were Set the World Afire, Anarchy in the U.K, 502, and, In My Darkest Hour. To Me I Think It Could Have Been Better, But Its Worth Buying The Remixes Are Pretty Good Too.
