| | Clannad Macalla CD Clannad Discography of CDs
Digitally remastered Japanese import has bonus mix for "Caislean Oir."
In signing to RCA Records in 1982, Clannad switched gears from traditional Celtic folk to more mainstream-oriented pop. 1985's MACALLA features both pop compositions and examples of Clannad's innovative, reverb-drenched ambient style.
The opening "Caislean Oir" is a lush vocal choir piece. The song, interpreted much like a Renaissance chant--with a distinct Celtic flair, of course--resonates with deep emotion. "Closer to Your Heart" and "Almost Seems (Too Late to Turn)" are particularly memorable. The electric guitar solo on the former shows off the superb skill of special guest Anton Drennan. Maire Brennan's vocal comes across as particularly inspired as she sings, "time will heal all your troubles away." But MACALLA's most moving song may be "In a Lifetime." U2's Bono sits in on this track, contributing an extremely passionate vocal performance.
Digitally remastered Japanese release featuring a bonus track: "Caislean Oir (Planet Heaven Mix)".

| | David LaMotte This Is My Song CD (2006)
Macalla CD music
$12.69 With nine CDs, fifteen road years and over eighteen hundred shows to his credit, LaMotte has written songs on almost every topic imaginable. Within that wide range of subject matter, though, there has always been a thread of conscience, calling us to consider our actions or lack thereof and inspiring us for the work we need to do.Though best known as a touring musician, LaMotte has also performed, keynoted and taught at numerous progressive events, including work with world-changers as prominent as Desmond Tutu, John Fife and Walter Wink. His peacemaking efforts have taken him from Bosnia to Belfast. He has developed and taught writing workshops for survivors of the Columbine school shootings as well as a retreat for pastors on the relationship between art, spirituality and politics. David has presented workshops on three continents for organizations as diverse as the Songwriters Association of Washington, the Guitar Association of New Zealand, homeless outreach centers, and the Research & Design department of a computer firm. He has also been a visiting lecturer at several colleges and universities. In the midst of his extensive touring schedule, LaMotte has made the time to launch a non-profit organization, PEG Partners, Inc. (www.pegpartners.org), which works to improve learning environments in Guatemalan schools. In 2005 PEG funded the creation of a computer lab for the children of Pachaj, Guatemala, and in early 2006 a new preschool opened in the town of Tzanchaj, built entirely with donations collected at LaMotte’s concerts, and named in his honor. This CD project release coincides with his appearance at a large anti-war rally in Berlin in March of 2006, and consists of a retrospective look at some of his topical songs on peace, justice and hope over the course of his career. It comes in a cardboard sleeve without extensive liner notes or a jewel box, and is therefore ...
| | Nelson Gill One World, One Light CD (2001)
Macalla music CDs
$14.79 One World, One Light continues in the same vein as Nelson Gill's first two albums, shuffling through a few different Caribbean musical styles (in this case, punta, reggae, soca, dancehall, and limbo) with catchy melodies and simple lyrics that are targeted at children. Happily, there is more variety on this record than on its predecessor. There are a couple of the "let's rock and dance" numbers that dominated Friends -- "Everybody Limbo" and "Dance" -- but they are fewer and farther between. Instead, there is a whimsical punta tune about a donkey who "for whatever reason" likes to sing the vowels ("Nowell [the Singing Donkey]"), a sharply crafted advertisement for Gill's homeland ("Come to Belize"), and a pair of inspirational reggae songs ("One World, One Light" and "Longest Journey") that could easily stand up to scrutiny on a Caribbean record marketed to adults. The arrangements are also quite inventive, including several instruments (Garifuna drums, turtle shell, shaker, tenor sax, trombone, and trumpet) that haven't appeared on any of Gill's prior efforts. Parents who were pleased with the bilingual lyrics on Gill's other albums may be disappointed to find that this one is wholly in English, but most ...

| | Alan Shavarsh Bardezbanian Oud Masterpieces: From Armenia, Turkey And The Middle East CD (2007)
Macalla CD music
$12.35 A nice collection of oud playing from the late Alan Shavarsh Bardezbanian, this album collects dance tunes from around the Mediterranean horn, as it were. The core of the music is Armenian (as was Bardezbanian), but there are Greek tunes picked up from his time working a taverna; Turkish tunes derived from the maqam system handed down by Bardezbanian's mentor, Esper Koprucu; and a stray peshrev or two. On top of this are inflections of what seems almost to be klezmer from time to time. This isn't really the intent, but the modal systems used occasionally turn the sound to a rather Jewish format (one almost hears "Hava Nagila" in one or two places). Bardezbanian's fluency with the clarinet only cements the klezmer parallels further. Regardless of the specific styles, though, Bardezbanian's playing is the real star here. He can allow the oud to serve as a bit player in a larger ensemble when the song calls for ...
