| | Porcupine Tree Deadwing CD (2005)
Sky Moves Sideways
$9.85 Considering their cinematic scope, it's fitting that the songs on DEADWING were actually inspired by a film script written by Porcupine Tree mastermind Steven Wilson. Not that this should come as any surprise to longtime fans who know the UK act's reputation for churning out epic progressive rock so sonically descriptive that it's practically visual.
Porcupine Tree creates works with complex structures that do not alienate or obscure the songs themselves, pieces that are dark and psychedelic without being sinister. On the 12-minute opening title track, weighty guitar riffs and spacious synths immediately recall Nine Inch Nails, but swooping melodic changes give way to ambient passages, making it plain that ...
| | Porcupine Tree Up The Downstair CDs (1993)
Sky Moves Sideways
$15.05 Definitely consciousness expanding, the prickly affectations of Porcupine Tree will only be lost on those too well-steeped in the cold, cruel world to avail themselves of these inebriating aural tonics. Fortunately, the rest of us lucky few who are mentally equipped to let UP THE DOWNSTAIR run barefoot through our minds will be ever so eager to do so. Take careful note of the sounds wafting from ye olde England--the wild potpourri of bands like Ozric Tentacles, Omnia Opera, Mandragora, and Porcupine Tree are making a mighty dent in those so exposed. This stuff is not going to be a secret much longer--and blessedly so. UP THE DOWNSTAIR's charismatic potions penetrate, obfuscate, and violate the creeks of the sensible mind with dreamy veils of guitars, pulsing rhythms, and layer upon layer ...

Sky Moves Sideways
$15.19 The unique style of Juiced can mostly be classified as rock, with some funk and jazz influences thrown into the mix as well. The band is made up of Matt Cherchio playing guitar, Tim Martone on bass, Brian May playing drums, and Erik Spangenberg on vocals as well as some piano. Juiced was formed three years ago by Matt, Tim and Brian, who recorded a number of songs and even produced a self titled album and a demo togehther titled “The Groove (demo #1)” with Brian singing. However, in the summer of 2004, after a series of conversations the band decided to look for a new singer. Matt and Tim discovered that their camp friend Erik, who had obvious vocal talent, and lived only an hour away from the Montclair area may be able to be a fourth possible member of the band. At camp, Matt and Tim taught Erik a number of songs that they had written with Brian to see if Erik could possibly join the three in a recording and potentially join the band. A few weeks after camp ended, Erik drove down to Montclair and went through with a recording of “The Sun Is Mine.” After listening to the result and experiencing the chemistry with a new vocalist, Erik became the fourth member of Juiced. Practices are limited to weekends due to driving constraints and distance between band members. A normal practice can consist of everything from recording a few songs, to rehearsing, and also writing new material. Juiced tries to get together every weekend and this proves to be difficult but the members manage to meet about twice a month. Some the inspirations that constantly fuel the music and ideas of Juiced include: The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, U2, John Frusciante, Jeff Buckley, and The Smashing Pumpkins to name a few. Juiced is inspired by, and very open to many different styles of music all of which have at least a slight impact on the overall music created by the band and this is apparent upon listening to the diverse selection of songs the band has to offer. The album featured here, "the Neverending Continuous Flow" is the newest installment from Juiced. The album was produced and recorded ...
| | Brown's Bag Soul Satisfied CD (2006) (Import)
Sky Moves Sideways
$17.15 This album is my thank you to Artist, Songwriters and Producers such as Gladys Knight, Teddy Pendergrass, Frankie Beverly & Maze, Curtis Mayfield, McFadden & Whitehead, Gamble & Huff, and other Soul Artist of the 70’s. With each mention of “Old School” around the world, you should stand and take your bow as your contribution to the world is absolutely clear and unchallenged. You are amongst my greatest influences and I hope you hear pieces of each you in me as I wish to honor you and remain true to the 70’s soul tradition. For fans of soul music, I hope this makes you remember that “Reggie had a set Friday night”. Everyone was there and when you got there, the blue light was glowing from the basement and man was it on. Since the “set” had to accommodate everyone, Reggie would turn on the strobe light for those that couldn’t dance to funk and then back to the blue light on tracks that made you want to dance real close. That’s what I wanted to achieve with tracks like “Rain” and “Can’t Let Go”. So while listening, if the mood strikes, feel free to unscrew that bright white bulb, clean the dust off the blue light and hold someone close for 70s sake.Shouldn’t a song remind you where you were, what you were doing and who you were with the first time you heard it? Isn’t that the magic and purpose of soul music? I hope “Touch My Heart”, “You Love Me” or “More Than Friends” create a special personal moment for you. What would Reggie’s set be if we didn’t Bop or Step? Hit me with “Contagious”, “Open Your Soul” or “Stay” turn the strobe light off and it’s on. Oh yeah…..I promise to be smooth and not step on your toes. Remember whispering in Reggie’s ear “man play something fast”. Why is it that girls always danced better than us on the fast tracks? Revisit that night with “Me Around”, “Toss “N” Turn” and “No More Love Remix”.I believe a soul song should make you smile, make you love, make you cry, make you laugh and most of all make you remember. After all, isn’t that why it’s called Soul Music? Let’s never forget Reggie’s set. That was the time of our life. That was “Old School” and I’m proud to have been there, with you. See you at the next set and until then do one thing for yourself….. Keep your “Soul Satisfied”.Ward Brown of Brown’s BagBlues & Soul Magazine5 stars and 'Album of the Fortnight'"...Best cut of the lot though is a shimmering real old school ballad called “Rain” – and it not just the title and the rain effects that remind me of the Dramatics, it’s the overall soulful feel. One of the year’s best indie soul sets."Justsoul.net5 stars"...I will remember driving in my car on a chilly English Autumn morning in November 2006, blue skies all around, the sun beaming down between the golden brown leaves of the trees, listening to this album. It was a beautiful day to soak up the beautiful feel of Brown’s Bag’s new release and it certainly made my Soul feel extremely Satisfied."Soulexpress.net5 stars and 'Album of the Month'"...YES! This is exactly what I want to hear: REAL soul by REAL singers...The love and passion of the music is obvious in every note, every word ...
