Zach Braff, cast member of the quirky TV sitcom SCRUBS, follows his show's lead by using eclectic music for the soundtrack to his film GARDEN STATE. The writer, director, and star of this acclaimed movie, Braff also served as the executive music producer, compiling an excellent mix of contemporary indie-rock, with a few older selections added for good measure.
For this tale of an estranged son returning to his New Jersey hometown for his mother's funeral, Braff taps the gamut of emotions appropriate to such an awkward homecoming. There's the twee pop-rock of the Shins ("Caring Is Creepy") and the melancholy musings of Coldplay ("Don't Panic"), along with the burnished regret of Men at Work's Colin Hay ("I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You") and Bonnie Somerville's wistfully nostalgic "Winding Road." Equally effective are Braff's soft electronica choices, ranging from Zero 7's ethereal and rich "In the Waiting Line" to Thievery Corporation's exotic, Middle Eastern-flavored "Lebanese Blonde." Also featuring the spare, acoustic sounds of Iron & Wine and Nick Drake, GARDEN STATE is a disc destined for permanent residence in many listeners' record collections.

WHat a Great Collection of Music Everyone once in a while I run into a movie that has an amazing sound track that I just have to have the second I leave the theatre. This is one of them. The songs are introspective and alternative sounding (which I love), adding a dream like quality to the movie and make great kick-back-and-relax music that's a out of the ordinary. $9.29 Vonray's self-titled Elektra debut is a collection of guitar anthems and ballads that should appeal to fans of middling adult alternative groups like Live, Vertical Horizon, and Remy Zero. Vaughan Rhea is the band's namesake, frontman, and one of three guitarists. He is joined by brother Dave Rhea on bass, drummer Jeff Irizarry, and fellow guitarists Garrett Coleman and Todd Hackenburg. While Vaughan seems to have a strong voice, his delivery here is an irritating three-part impersonation of Eddie Vedder, Ed Kowalczyk, and Scott Stapp. Each lyrical couplet ends with a short, emotive intake of air; most choruses erupt in the throaty, arena-ready bellow Vedder bequeathed to Stapp. Musically, the band evokes the stilted, tentative pop style of CCM groups such as Jars of Clay. Quasi-spiritual lyrics ("Evil deeds that breed temptation," from the Pearl Jam-meets-Live songwriting project "Part of Me") don't help matters any. The rousing first single "Inside Out" has gained exposure for the band through its inclusion on the Smallville ...
