Following in the footsteps of alt-country icons Shelby Lynne, Allison Moorer, and Maria McKee, Tift Merritt gilds her sophomore effort, TAMBOURINE, with country-inflected soul, a stylistic crossroads where Nashville and Muscle Shoals meet. Teaming ... Full Descriptionup with Black Crowes/Jayhawks producer George Drakoulias, Merritt doles out healthy servings of roots-rock that include the chugging "Your Love Made a U-Turn" (with its bubbling bass and chirping harmonies), the jangly "Stray Paper," and the organ-smothered "Wait It Out."
Blessed with a voice reminiscent of a breathier Dusty Springfield, the native Texan has earned plenty of praise from her peers, resulting in a few noteworthy guests popping up on this outing. Pedal-steel virtuoso Robert Randolph checks in on the rollicking "I Am Your Tambourine," while McKee and Jayhawk Gary Louris harmonize on the twangy "Late Night Pilgrim" and the bittersweet "Write My Ticket." But make no mistake, Merritt's chops allow her to forge her own way. When she tucks her croon amid the Memphis Horns-flavored arrangements of "Good Hearted Man," there's no difficulty discerning the gal's soul pedigree. With TAMBOURINE, Tift Merritt takes another step towards gaining a foothold in the world of insurgent country.Rolling Stone (p.81) - 3 stars out of 5 - "There's not a dud among the dozen tracks, a testament to Merritt's talent as both a distinctive singer and writer." Spin (p.120) - "She can sound brand-new and busted-down in the same verse, and she sings like a guitar player." - Grade: B+ Entertainment Weekly (p.123) - "Merritt's voice is a magical combination of cool reserve and effortless warmth..." - Grade: A- Uncut (p.109) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[T]he key lies in the expressive pull and dew-on-the-vine purity of her remarkable voice." Mojo (Publisher) (p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[T]his one finds her with a steelier determination in her country soul and an inclination to rock out that she's only previously hinted at." Broadening Her Audience? I think Tift Merritt has a lot going for her. I loved Bramble Rose. This follow-up album seems geared toward broadening Tift's audience, and I have a feeling it will. I'll stick with Bramble Rose for now, and we'll see what tomorrow brings. Submitted by cfrobetterdays (Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One of the best albums of the year This is, by far, one of the best albums I've heard this year and one of the best performances I've seen as well. Tift has an amazing road band, definitely check it out if you get the chance. If not, pick up this cd. Well worth the money. Not a weak track on the entire album. | | Lucinda Williams World Without Tears CD (2003)
Tambourine CD music
$12.25 WORLD WITHOUT TEARS was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Righteously" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Though it's ultimately a less balladic, more stylistically varied album than its dreamy predecessor ESSENCE, WORLD WITHOUT TEARS starts out with a slow-burning, reverb-drenched ballad, but then takes a sharp turn into sensual lyricism, pounding drums, and churning guitar on "Righteously." For some time, the dominant topic of Lucinda Williams albums has been the edgy appeal of dangerous, often doomed men, and true to form there are plenty of those on WORLD WITHOUT TEARS. Witness the tragic ...

| | Lucinda Williams Live @ The Fillmore West CDs (2005) Digipak
Tambourine songs
$15.65 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning emotions that lay at their core, making plain the inherent frisson lurking below the surface of such ostensibly laconic tunes as "Lonely Girls" and "Righteously." Meanwhile, songs that already had plenty of bite in their studio versions are pumped up to an even more electrifying, visceral level (a bold, crunching "Changed the Locks;" the roaring, bluesy "Joy"). The debt Williams ...
| | Kathleen Edwards Back To Me CD (2005)
Tambourine album
$12.35 Edwards has a gift for writing choruses that burrow under the skin, both for their melodic seductiveness and their lyrical acumen. "Away," an airy acoustic tune about an abandoned love, haunts long after listening, and the boisterous title track boasts a compelling refrain. The most effective song overall is "Copied Keys," a mid-tempo lament about being subsumed by a relationship conducted on someone else's terms. The album ends on an up note with the gently philosophical "Good Things."
Kathleen Edwards excels at simple denim-and-leather country rock that recalls the best moments of Freedy ...

| | Rod Stewart As Time Goes By: The Great American Songbook Vol. 2 CD (2003)
Tambourine album
$8.55 AS TIME GOES BY VOL. 2 was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
On his second album tackling the Great American Songbook of the album's subtitle, Rod Stewart sounds even more energized, and seems to insert more of himself into his delivery of gems by the Gershwins, Rodgers & Hart, et al. Though two veteran pop-rock producers (Richard Perry and Phil Ramone) handle most of the tracks, they wisely make no attempt to "rock up" any of the arrangements, instead leaving Stewart to explore his balladeer side to its fullest.
One may wonder why the Perry-produced tracks feature layers of string synthesizer, when Ramone's cuts employ the real thing; presuming that there was no lack of budget here, it must have been some inscrutable aesthetic choice. While those more accustomed to a traditional approach may be put off by this aspect, or by a pair of duets with Cher and Queen Latifah, this album isn't for them anyway. It's for those who have followed Stewart through all the stylistic byways of his career and are ready to go with him around one more bend.

Tambourine songs
$6.19 Upstate's songs for the independent movie "Missing" combine indie rock sensibilities, jam-band rhythms, and folkie acoustics into a melodic, textured backdrop of haunting melodies and driving beats.Upstate is the continuation of the Dishwater Psychics recording project. Formed in 1999, Dishwater Psychics released four home-recorded albums under their own name and one in conjunction with the now-defunct Savannah, Ga. label Circuit Records. Their first release, the "Industrial Prophet" EP, garnered minor radio play and favorable reviews in their hometown of Dayton, Ohio. The follow-up, "Blueprint of a God," was recorded on analog 4-tracks in cramped closets and basement stairwells in the summer of 2000. When founding member John moved to Denver, Colorado, the others continued sending their input to each ...
