Keith Jarrett has lived many lives in jazz. As a sideman with Miles Davis, Jarrett played keyboards on recordings like LIVE EVIL that changed the music world by making fusion a viable genre. As the author of long, contemplative piano improvisations, he helped to spawn New Age music. And as an interpreter of various eras of European compositional music, he made the "classical crossover" years before that term became popular.
In 2004, Jarrett went back to the source, figuratively sipping at the post-bop wellspring of the Great American Songbook before an audience in Munich, Germany with drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Gary Peacock. Captured with the usual pristine ECM audio clarity (including the pianist's trademark grunts and scatting), this outing finds Jarrett swinging hard through Cole Porter's "I Love You" and Jimmy McHugh's "I Can't Believe That You're in Love with Me." Whenever Jarrett runs the risk of meandering, the ultra-tight rhythm section reins him in, keeping even the nearly 20-minute bluesy title track sounding breezy.

Also Feat:Jack Dejohnette. Live In Munich 2001Down Beat (p.72) - 4 stars out of 5 - "Peacock and DeJohnette cook with placid yet assured intensity. Their pinnacle artistry, nearing 30 years, spreads a mesa of delight." JazzTimes (pp.112-13) - "When Jarrett airs it out, the exhilaration comes partly from how spontaneous, subjective digressions are thrown off in profligate extravagance, but even more from how they always return seamlessly to the song." Keith Jarrett Out-Of-Towners Songs Out-Of-Towners Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Beautiful & perfect, what else. This disc is a great as most Jarrett trio discs. The purpose of this review is to say to Jarrett fans with a limited CD-budget that you can pass this one and will not suffer - there is nothing revealed here that you can not live without and your knowledge of the Jarrett trio will not be jeopardize in any way. This is beautiful and perfect, but so are their other discs, and this offers more of the same perfection. Submitted by Kari (Washington DC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
An intimate evening by the Out Of Towners... This is the music strikes a responsive chord with every lover of music. Messrs.Jarrett, Peacock, and Dejohnette, take on familiar material and interveaves a variety of technique in a manner that recalls the great interplay of the Evans,Lafaro, and Motian group. Always the perfect trio Two new compositions of keith. As a fan like me who own all the records of the trio and solos of jarrett, this is one step more to say that they are the best in jazz today. Is unbelieble to live in the same time, I'll run to buy the next. Submitted by patriciocastrourgel (Santiago, CHILE, South America) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Out-Of-Towners album
$14.65 Recorded live at Festival De Jazz d' Antibes, Juan Les Pins, France on July 16, 2002. Includes liner notes by Keith Jarrett.
"Butch & Butch" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.
According to Keith Jarrett's ultimately uplifting liner notes, this live recording is one that very nearly did not happen. Apparently, it does not typically rain much or often in July on France's Cote d'Azur. However, in 2002, the sun did not shine for several days running there and the (outdoor) Festival de Jazz d'Antibes, not being accustomed to the uncooperative heavens, did not have a backup performance venue. On top of all of this, the members of this nearly legendary trio were all more or less recuperating from various illnesses, and feeling all the glummer for the rain. After an epiphany over an espresso backstage (read: the rainy, windswept beach), Jarrett convinced his colleagues that more or less, the show must go on. Besides he lobbied, "We need the therapy. We need the music."

| | Dave Holland Overtime CD (2005)
Out-Of-Towners CD music
$13.45 This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include Chris Potter and Robin and Duane Eubanks, Antonio Hart, Steve Nelson, Josh Roseman, Billy Kilson, Taylor Haskins, Gary Smulyan, Jonathan Arons and Alex Sipiagin. The music centers around the opening four-part "Monterey Suite," a tour de force commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival and originally performed there in 2001. Holland's writing for the trombone section is dynamite. Roseman, Arons, and Robin Eubanks offer up solid bottom rung lines and tight timing as anchors for the rest ...
| | Keith Jarrett Radiance CDs (2005)
Out-Of-Towners music CDs
$21.29 Jarrett's wide range of influences is threaded throughout--strains of classical, jazz, pop, and world music are identifiable here and there. As with all his improvised work, there is a great feeling of exhilaration for the listener in discovering--along with his concert audience--where Jarrett will go next. In fact, RADIANCE feels even more open-ended than previous efforts in that it relies less on recurring themes and more on small bits of musical ...
| | Thelonious Monk Quartet With John Coltrane - At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Out-Of-Towners songs
$13.75 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master ...
