| | Pat Metheny Metheny Mehldau CD (2006)
Christmas Lullaby
$15.65 This collaboration between guitarist Pat Metheny and pianist Brad Mehldau echoes the 1962 minor masterpiece UNDERCURRENT, a set of improvised duets between guitarist Jim Hall and pianist Bill Evans. Like Hall and Evans, Mehldau and Metheny rarely stray too far from a standard approach, sticking mostly to post bop and ballad frameworks. But the magic of the album comes from the warm, intricate webs the two ...
| | Richard Thompson Sweet Warrior CD (2007)
Christmas Lullaby
$12.09 Arriving in the wake of the folk-flavored, acoustic-based FRONT PARLOUR BALLADS, SWEET WARRIOR marks U.K. folk-rock hero Richard Thompson's valiant return to electric guitar fireworks. Shooting off the kind of rock-&-roll sparks that had been missing from his catalog since 1996's YOU? ME? US? Thompson reminds listeners of why he's remained one of the most revered guitar heroes of the post-Hendrix era.
SWEET WARRIOR is no self-indulgent riff-fest, though; it contains some of Thompson's most sharply written songs in years. Released amid the furor of the U.S. occupation of Iraq, "Dad's Gonna Kill Me" (the reference is a nickname for Baghdad) initially garnered the most attention, but it's in good company. The ...
| | Essential Anuna CD (2005)
Christmas Lullaby
$14.29 Anuna dabbles in traditional church music ("Christus Resurgens"), Irish folk ("The Flower of Maherally"), and McGlynn's own 21st-century updates of these forms ("Victimae"). The group even takes a turn at an Elvis Costello and Bill Frisell tune entitled "Deep Dead Blue" (which Anuna imbues with an appropriately haunting and eerie cast). Though the personnel of Anuna is constantly rotating (the ensemble averages around 15 singers), its sound is never less than full and seamlessly integrated. Anuna makes evocative music that feels ancient, contemporary, and timeless at once, and ESSENTIAL is an ideal way to sample its talents.
ESSENTIAL ANUNA is a career overview of the compelling Celtic choral ensemble. At 19 tracks, ESSENTIAL is a generous compilation of Anuna's ...

| | Celtic Woman CD (2005)
Christmas Lullaby
$12.55 CELTIC WOMAN is the brainchild of David Downes, a composer/conductor who was heavily involved with the American production of RIVERDANCE. Not surprisingly, all of the lights, drama, and musical bombast of that esteemed show are present on this production as well. Instead of showcasing legions of dancers, however, CELTIC WOMAN puts the emphasis on the rich heritage of traditional and contemporary Irish music, as performed by five talented female performers from varying musical backgrounds.
Though the melodies are often extremely simple and unadorned, the production is just as lush and majestic as anything on Yanni's LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS, and should appeal to fans of that disc. The opening track features the extraordinary, bell-like vocal timbre of 15-year-old Chloe Agnew over an orchestral backing that includes tin whistle. "Isle of Inisfree" showcases Orla Fallon, whose dark voice and supple harp playing make for a haunting listening experience. On numerous tracks, several of the Irish sirens sing together; ...
| | Sepultura Chaos A.D. CD (1993)
Christmas Lullaby
$13.35 Sepultura truly claimed its place on the heavy-metal world stage with 1993's CHAOS A.D., a focused, dose-of-thunder release that crystallized the Brazilian outfit's aesthetic. Propulsive rhythms, gravel-voice shouting, and epic guitar riffs drenched in nerve-fraying distortion come together in a perfect marriage here. But while Sepultura's music was originally inspired by the likes of Metallica and Slayer, CHAOS A.D. feels considerably more stripped-down than the music of these mentors--progressive changes and long, showy solos are few and far between.
Instead, Sepultura emphasizes fierce, straightforward structures that have more in common with hardcore's no-nonsense approach than metal's glamorous flash. The band's lyrics take a distinctly political turn on CHAOS A.D., addressing issues such as state-generated war ("Refuse/Resist") ...
