It's doubtful that power metal will ever regain the huge commercial momentum it enjoyed in the '80s, when bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Queensr˙che sold millions of albums. But the power metal revival movement of the '90s and 2000s has enjoyed a small cult following, especially in Europe -- nothing to rival the sales of Queensr˙che's Operation: Mindcrime or Priest's Screaming for Vengeance back in the day, but not something to be ashamed of either. Most of today's power metal revival bands offer an exact replica of power metal as it was known in the late '70s and early '80s; on Infernal, however, Silent Voices adds a bit of thrash to the mix. This Finnish band is power metal first and foremost, but the interesting thing is the way they manage to incorporate both progressive rock and thrash at the same time. If Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Queensr˙che, and King Diamond are the main ingredients, Silent Voices sees to it that some tasty extra ingredients come in the form of Rush, Kansas, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer as well as Metallica, Megadeth, and Venom. That thrash edge gives Infernal (which was recorded in Helsinki in 2003) a tougher, dirtier quality than you get with most of Europe's power metal revival discs; these guys rock aggressively hard, but at the same time, Infernal is undeniably melodic. Loud and forceful, certainly, but melodic nonetheless. Describing Infernal as interesting isn't saying that what Silent Voices does on this CD is innovative; the Finns are retro and derivative, but derivative in a good way -- and their refusal to sacrifice either melody or forcefulness serves them pleasingly well on Infernal. ~ Alex Henderson

Infernal album
$10.35 An all-star aggregation similar in conception to Ayreon, Avantasia's The Metal Opera naturally spotlights its creator, Tobias Sammet, who wrote all the music and the involved fantasy storyline over the course of a year as a side project from his main gig with the German power metal band Edguy. Though Sammet's vocals play a major role, he recruited some of his power metal contemporaries to sing the parts of different characters in the story, tailoring his casting choices -- elves, dwarves, Druids, and other D&D-type mainstays -- to their vocal ranges. (Oddly, given the themes, there's a bit of a Christian undertone to the lyrics.) It's tempting to say that for a grandiose conceptual project like this, the scope of the ambition is more important (and entertaining) than the actual results. Everything here is painted in such sweeping colors -- the epic song lengths, the heroic themes of the narrative, the bombastic arrangements, even the brief Latin-titled interludes -- that it can be difficult to see how the album could ever achieve the heights it aims for, even if it turns out well. But no matter how over the top things get, it still takes a certain level of craft to pull off something like this convincingly. And in ...

| | Axel Rudi Pell Mystica CD (2006)
Infernal songs
$14.55 Yet another album by German guitar superstar Axel Rudi Pell, Mystica delivers...well, pretty much what every previous Axel Rudi Pell album has delivered. Pell is comfortable enough with his impressive chops that he doesn't have to do the whole God of the Fretboard routine that so many European metal guitarists are saddled with, so his albums are refreshingly light on the pyrotechnics. He does have a fondness for the pretentiously titled instrumental, however, so here listeners have "Haunted Castle Serenade (Opus #4 Grazioso e Aggresso)" and "The Mysterious Return (Intro)." Otherwise, this is utterly straightforward, by the book melodic hard rock in the '80s poodle-hair style, complete with former Hardline singer Johnny Gioeli's pleasant but utterly anonymous vocals. If you still treasure your Scorpions and Rainbow albums, Mystica is sure to please, but those whose taste in metal has progressed beyond 1987 might find this unapologetically old-school stuff too retro for their tastes. ~ Stewart Mason
Axel has been a firm fixture in the German Melodic Hard scene. In the musical microcosm Axel Rudi Pell has always had everything in its traditional ...
| | Metal Church Light In The Dark CD (2006) Bonus Track
Infernal album
$15.05 Throughout the career of Metal Church, guitarist Kurdt Vanderhoof has always been considered the leader of the band, and their 2006 release A Light in the Dark, proves it once and for all. Being the only original member left in attendance by this point, Vanderhoof knows exactly what Metal Church fans look for in each release, and on their ninth release overall, the group plays largely by the rules. Despite the absence of familiar faces, the sound is unmistakably Metal Church -- Vanderhoof can still riff with the best of 'em, while singer Ronny Munroe and drummer Jeff Plate sound almost precisely like original ...

| Wuthering Heights Shadow Cabinet CDs (2006)
Infernal CD music
$14.49 Wuthering Heights just may have created a new subgenre of heavy metal -- frantic prog metal -- with their fourth studio release overall, 2007's The Shadow Cabinet. Sure, bands such as Iron Maiden, Queensr˙che, and Dream Theater may have helped trailblaze prog metal. But Wuthering Heights take it to a whole new dramatic level on The Shadow Cabinet -- especially such triumphant tracks as "Demon Desire," "Faith -- Apathy Divine, Pt. 1," and "I Shall Not Yield." Not all of the album is an over ...

| | Deadlock Earth Revolt CD (2005)
Infernal CD music
$10.69 Deadlock create a bit of metallic high drama on the opening intro of Earth.Revolt, "Demonic (Tonus Diabolus)" before careening headlong into the lengthy nu-metal meets old-school hard rock of "10,000 Generations in Blood." Lead singer Johannes Prem is wailing early and often but is often drowned out by the guitars of Sebastian Reichl and Gert Rymen. The female harmonies add a relaxing touch and reprieve from the hard rock style, making it more majestic or elegant particularly during the closing. For the most part though it is classic metal riffs that weave a fine musical thread throughout. The chore for such a song is to maintain its relevance over eight minutes, and by the fifth minute, they up the ante by giving way to the rapid-fire licks of their guitarists. On the shorter tracks, Deadlock are typical nu-metal, with some different approaches like using keyboard or ethereal touches buried underneath guitars on "The Year of the Crow" that brings to mind Metallica overdosing on the Red Bull energy drink. "Everlasting Pain" takes no prisoners and is one of the best songs offered, with a hellacious drum beat and the dual guitarists playing perfectly off each other before taking it down with a music box dancer piano, bringing to mind Faith No More albeit fleetingly before returning to the metal brawn. The title track is perhaps the most radio-friendly, with a hard, beefy chorus and a decent hook built throughout. Another asset is how Reichl and Rymen show off their chops without going over the top or doing ...
