This Roots associate's second album, following 2003's The Bootleg of the Bootleg EP, is a loose concept record about a week in her life. The ups, the downs, the come-ons, the threats, the observations, the actions -- it's all in there, it all fits together, and it all transpires without the MC having to cram an inhuman amount syllables into one breath (as she has before). Jean Grae continues to improve in every respect, but the negative aspect is that too many of the beats bleed into one another. None are certifiably lifeless. But, when strung together, they add up to an album that numbs the mind around the second half. In one respect, it's a blessing in disguise -- you often have to recall the words, not the sounds that support them, in order to distinguish one track from another. Given the range of emotions and subjects Grae covers so well, that's not so hard to do, and in turn that shortcoming makes you appreciate her all the more. Lyrically, she isn't quite as ill-tempered as she has been in the past, though her takedowns -- when they do come -- are more vicious than ever. Try "Whatever"'s "Verbally hang thee with these third-degree burns/Upon your fannies/And your balls ripped off/Course it's all talk/I'll lick off the potshots and cut your d*ck off/And sell it like it's porn to the pawn shop/I try to stop the bad things but they stay on top." A promising thing is that Jeanius -- an excellent album written and recorded in five days, manned entirely by 9th Wonder (producer of Murs' Murs 3:16, Jay-Z's "Threat," and one of This Week's highlights) -- sidesteps the issue at play on this album and is promised to be released soon. Leaked well before This Week saw the light of day and already catching attention, it stands a chance of gaining the MC the level of respect she deserves. ~ Andy KellmanSpin (p.115) - "Jean Grae is a talented MC who operates in gray areas and flexes serious gray matter, slinging disses, confessions, boasts, and love songs, swinging her sense of humor like a scythe." Uncut (p.150) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Grae cruises eloquently over booming, soul-sampling backdrops that recall Jay-Z's recent triumphs." One of the great female MC's (MC's period) today. While everyone talks about Eve, Foxxy, and Lil Kim, I give you a great female MC by the name of Jean Grae. This Week, to me, is one of those albums that lets you close your eyes and feel everything Grae is talking about. She has metaphors for days and can handle some of the male MC's in the game now. One of the best since the most underrated Bahamadia. Submitted by NJClark22 (Portsmouth, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

it's okay...
Not nearly as good as 'Attack Of The Attacking Things', lyrically or beat wise. That is why I don't rate 'This Week' as high. Dope track produced by 9th Wonder, a few others, but a few more misses in there as well. She has something to say, but the album suffers from poor production. Just wait till her LP 'Jenious'(produced entirely by 9th Wonder) drops, nobody will even talk about 'This Week' after that. Submitted by Culture (Queens, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
her flow is unique It’s a classic...she is probably the best female emcee I ever heard, no lie. Her beats are nice plus she has good lyrical content. Her punch lines & metaphors are crazy. After listening to this CD I went back to the store (on the same day) and brought her other two CD's. Submitted by 123 (Philly P.A.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Very Best Of Marvin Gaye CD (2001) (Import) Japan
This Week
$51.25 Japan exclusive compilation for the late soul icon. 34 tracks in total. 2 CD. Universal. 2004.
Personnel includes: Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, Kim Weston (vocals); The Vandellas (background vocals). Producers include: Smokey Robinson, Ashford & Simpson, Ivy Jo Hunter, Norman Whitfield, Harvey Fuqua. Compilation producer: Harry Weinger. Includes liner notes by David Ritz. Marvin Gaye left behind one of the greatest legacies in American pop music, a fascinating and irresistible string of chart hits and stunning album-long suites that explored the sacred/secular divide in his own soul, and by extension, the philosophical divide in the American psyche, and he did it all with grace, ease, assurance, and style. This double-disc anthology hits the obvious high points, but also is deep enough to include some rarities (like the wonderful What's Going On footnote song "Where Are We Going?"), live tracks (his famous live performance of "Distant Lover" from an Oakland concert is included), a generous selection of his classic duets with Tammi Terrell, and his late, last burst of brilliance, 1982's "Sexual Healing." There are countless Marvin Gaye compilations on the market, but Gold does as well a job as any of them at skating across the high points of his career. The thing to remember, though, is that the water is deep, and listeners owe it to themselves to eventually dive down past these kinds of "greatest hits" collections into the full sweep of this brilliant singer's body of work. ~ Steve Leggett Marvin Gaye is well-served by Gold: Greatest Hits, a compilation issued by the Canadian wing of Universal. Spanning his entire career, it brings listeners from his 1962 Motown breakthrough "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" to his final hit, 1982's "Sexual Healing." The disc misses few of his major recordings, gives equal weight to his '60s and '70s material, and includes a good share of his duets (with Tammi Terrell, Kim Weston, and even Diana Ross). The album title is a misnomer, since these weren't always his biggest hits, but the selection is much the better for not being chained to the charts; the Gaye-Ross duet, "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)," was picked over the three hits that appeared on 1973's Diana and Marvin LP, but it was the highlight of the record. ~ John Bush Frankly, there are enough different Marvin Gaye best-of ...

$13.15 This is the 1996, debut release of Shadow Light. Keyboardist, John Clough, of bands such as Faith & Disease and Prayers for the Raven, now comes forward with his new band and CD-album. This new project is definitely darkwave-goth and set to themes such as Sanity, Horror, and Loss. Within the Shadow Light, is a 10 song album that is an easy purchase for anyone who has danced ...
