As one of the six-string lite-jazz inheritors of the Wes Montgomery guitar-jazz mantle, Norman Brown continues to bridge the worlds of musical improvisation and contemporary R&B via the crisp WEST COAST COOLIN'. In following up the success of 2002's JUST CHILLIN', the Louisiana native continues to infuse more soul nuances into his music by recruiting producers James Poyser and Vikter Dupliax, better known for working with neo-soul stalwarts Jill Scott, D'Angelo, and Erykah Badu. The result is an airy yet intricate romp that finds Brown not only serving up a percolating reading of the Marvin Gaye classic "What's Going On," but doing equally well with the far funkier opener, "I Might," with its slightly hip-hop-flavored beats and shuffling cadence.
The remaining eight tracks don't disappoint, as the guitarist keeps up a crackling pace. The snappy "Up 'N' at 'Em" finds Brown tossing in just enough George Benson-like scatting to satisfy any old-school aficionados. Also notable is "Right Now," a flight of inspired playing that manages to mix in more scatting, along with deft finger-picking and the breathy harmonies of vocalist Lynn Fiddmont-Linsey.

Norman Brown West Coast Coolin' Songs West Coast Coolin' Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Perfect like always. I'm very pleased with this new cd. Norman Brown on his smooth guitar makes the sun shining again. On this cd he also sings more than on his other cd's. This combination makes this cd superb. An Excellent Effort I still don't think that this is as good as "After The Storm" but is a fine release-and to "Kenny" (who wrote a review on this album), maybe you should listen to all of his works before you cast judgement! Enjoy the music folks! Submitted by J.R. (Minnesota, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

EXCELLENT CD I loved this CD especially the 1st track, "I Might". It was old school R & B, the music arrangement was awesome. Submitted by DAVISSHIRL246 (DURHAM, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
This man is off the chain. Not only is the CD kickin, but his live concerts are very entertaining. He has a song with Michael McDonald that is real nice and smooth. The 1st song on the CD kinda fooled me because I thought I was listening to a R&B track. Very upbeat song. Nice work. Norman is singing more in this CD and he is good. It's what his audience was asking for all along. If you are a jazz fan or just not sure if you should see Norman live, let me tell you, buy the tickets, grab your wine and picnic basket and get to the show. You'll never regret it. He also autographed my CD and tickets. Very down to earth guy.

West Coast Coolin'
$9.29 Nine albums into his career, Boney James makes a grab for the smooth-jazz crown with PURE, an outing that finds him working with a mix of soul and jazz luminaries. James ups the stakes by taking over the production reins (in addition to co-writing every song). Still front and center with his beloved tenor saxophone, this Grammy-nominated artist shifts to soprano sax for the harmony-soaked Bilal duet "Better with Time" and the silk sheets-and-champagne slow jam "Break of Dawn," featuring up-and-coming Detroit crooner Dwele.
Debi Nova adds her lovely vocals to the beat-driven "Appreciate," a cut that wouldn't sound out of place on a Toni Braxton or Brandy album. Instrumentals are still the focus, however, as revealed on the light funk of "Here She Comes" ...

| | River Cow Orchestra Emerging CD (2008)
West Coast Coolin'
$10.15 River Cow Orchestra was born on the banks of the Missouri River during a Brother Iota concert at Cooper\'s Landing outside Columbia, Missouri. We had enlisted our previous bass player, Don McCarter to fill in for our usual guitar player, Don Rolling, and we had added a violin player, Michael Lagrega. The band we were opening for, C3 also had several guys filling in for regular band members. Brent Bowman and I realized that in order to play regularly we were going to have to hook up with some new folks and start another project. Don R. was coping with a new baby and Ryan Jones, our regular bass player was having to travel quite a bit. So we decided that Brother Iota would continue on when its members were available to play as a band, but Brent and I would start, and he asked me for a name here, and I said River ...
