ETERNAL proves (yet again) that saxophonist Branford Marsalis, though no longer a "young lion" of jazz, still has a strong, unique musical voice. This 2004 album begins with "The Ruby and the Pearl," a somber tune that suggests an Argentinean ... Full Descriptiontango. On this selection, Marsalis's soprano sax glides effortlessly over the understated rhythms. The title track is really a tone poem; it tells the story of the universe through both large, sweeping gestures and soft, delicate colors. Over 17 minutes long, this work is an extended improvisation that crescendos little by little, then explodes and collapses on itself; after a pause, the gentle melody reappears. Overall, this is a very reflective, even melancholy record. Here Marsalis is not interested in impressing the listener with awesome chops--he's just interested in creating great music

JazzTimes (p.115) - "It is an album of evocative ballads....Though the song never comes to a full boil, its beautifully drawn dynamic and rhythmic contours make clear how highly developed this band's art has become." Eternal album
$14.85 In the early 2000s, more and more jazz musicians began breaking away from the Great American Songbook. Rather than limiting themselves to the standard tunes from Tin Pan Alley and Broadway, jazz artists started to embrace pop music to a greater extent. Pianist Brad Mehldau was one of the most noted proponents of this shift.
On the 2004 solo outing, LIVE IN TOKYO, Mehldau further distances himself from the older pianistic traditions of Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, et al. This is evidenced by his choice of repertoire, which includes two songs by melancholy British folk icon Nick Drake ("Things Behind the Sun" and "River Man") and one by rock renegades Radiohead ("Paranoid Android"). Mehldau's interpretations also ...

| | Wynton Marsalis Live At The House Of Tribes CD (2005)
Eternal music CDs
$15.65 This live set finds jazz ambassador Wynton Marsalis doing what he does best--that is, playing straightforward, bop-inflected jazz with flawless technique. Marsalis pays homage to the masters with versions of Thelonious Monk's "Green Chimneys" and Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee," and offers a lilting, smoky reading of the standard "You Don't Know What Love Is."
There is plenty of stretching out over these six tracks, with superb solos from both Marsalis ...
| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Eternal songs
$13.15 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release tunefulness, creating rhythmic and harmonic intricacies that seem to spur Coltrane's saxophone exploration to new heights.
The quartet shines on ballads ("Sweet and Lovely"), but the leaders display their best chemistry ...

| | Bob Dylan Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid CD (1973) Original Soundtrack; SDTK
Eternal album
$6.89 Though the remainder of the album is devoted to instrumentals, tracks like the delicate, wistful "River Theme" are impressive in their own understated way. Backed by Byrds' guitarist Roger McGuinn and an assortment of top-drawer West Coast session players, Dylan created a moody, mythic musical landscape on PAT GARRETT & BILLY THE KID. It was one of his last albums to capture the restless spirit and otherworldly feel of his classic sixties recordings.
Even though it contains the classic rock standard "Knocking on Heaven's Door," PAT GARRETT & BILLY THE KID is one of Dylan's least-known albums. Recorded as the soundtrack to the surreal, somewhat violent Sam Peckinpah Western in which Dylan co-starred, the album consists mainly of reflective, rustic instrumentals. Of the two songs with vocals, "Billy" is a compelling outlaw narrative, complete with earnestly strummed acoustic guitars ...
