| | Chris Isaak Christmas CD Chris Isaak Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
On this charming holiday album, honey-throated crooner Chris Isaak lends his pipes to a host of Christmas classics, including twangy versions of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Let It Snow," "The Christmas Song," and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" (a duet with Stevie Nicks). Few contemporary vocalists have the chops to pull off both "White Christmas" and "Mele Kalikimaka" without danger of setting Bing Crosby spinning in his grave. Isaak--his voice as smooth as eggnog--manages the task, respectfully reinterpreting both songs as vintage country-pop carols. Isaak's originals sound like lost standards themselves. The heart-melting "Brightest Star" sets moving lyrics about a spiritual epiphany to a buttery ballad that would have been right at home on the 1964 Billboard charts, while the raucous country shuffle "Hey Santa" is almost worthy of the King (Elvis, that is) himself. Isaak's backing band provides tasteful accompaniment, with some shining slide guitar work by Hershel Yatovitz.
Personnel include: Chris Isaak (vocals, guitar); Stevie Nicks (vocals); Hershel Yatovitz (guitar, background vocals); Rowland Salley (bass guitar, background vocals); Kenny Dale Johnson (drums, background vocals).

Christmas
$12.49 All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
Ferry's first solo effort since the second breakup of Roxy Music is arguably his best, in part because it continues in the direction the band had been going. It's like AVALON, only more so.
Here, Ferry's lounge lizard affectations are writ large; the lyrical pose is all bruised romantic fatalism (say hello, "Slave to Love"), and the music fits it like a glove. The album's soundscapes are lush and echo-laden, and nearly every track has a discreet disco pulse; "Valentine," the one exception, is mid-tempo reggae. Overlaid with skittish percussion and guitars, BOYS AND GIRLS is the aural equivalent of a white dinner jacket and a half-empty bottle of champagne.
Personnel: Bryan Ferry; Chester Kamen, David Gilmore, David Sanborn, Ednah Holt, Fonzi Thornton, Guy Fletcher , Alan Spenner, Alfa Anderson, Marcus Miller, Mark Knopfler, Martin McCarrick, Neil Hubbard, Neil Jason, Nile Rodgers, Omar Hakim, Andy Newmark, Ruby Turner, Tony Levin , Keith Scott, Jimmy Maelen, John Carin, Michelle Cobbs, Yannick Etienne, Colleen Fitz-Charles, Virginia Hewes, Anne Stephenson.

| | Best Of Govi CD (2005)
Christmas
$11.95 This is an 11-track tour through the highlights of Govi's four albums for Higher Octave Records. Anyone who has heard the German-born guitarist's stylings will have a sense of what's included here: This is light, soothing, guitar-centered music that owes a debt to the flamenco tradition, yet also has one foot firmly planted in New Age and easy-listening territory.
Govi's compositions are quite tuneful, and never accelerate beyond a pleasant, mid-tempo groove, keeping just enough exotic flavor to make the music alluring and seductive. Govi excels at gentle, swaying ballads, like the evocative "This Precious Moment," but tunes like "Bumblebeat" and the passionate "Rumba Tumba" will get the toes tapping and the head nodding. This sultry music represents the cream of Govi's output, and is the perfect accompaniment for a beach-side stroll, a candle-lit dinner, or ...

Punctuated by Dolly musical numbers, UNLIKELY ANGEL is a Capra-esque affirmation of the holidays, love, and family.

| | LaBelle Nightbirds CD (1974)
Christmas
$5.95 After two commercially unsuccessful albums for Warner Brothers, LaBelle moved to Epic in 1974 to record the brash, deeply funky NIGHTBIRDS. Helmed by famed New Orleans producer, arranger, and hit-maker Allen Toussaint, NIGHTBIRDS mixes sassy New Orleans R&B with hard-driving funk and LaBelle's soulful, often eclectic, take on girl-group dynamics. On the strength of Toussaint's horn-driven arrangements and the album's runaway smash single, "Lady Marmalade" (with its immediately memorable French refrain), NIGHTBIRDS shot up the charts.
The remainder of the album measures up to the standard set by its single, especially on the sly groover "Don't Bring Me Down" and the thumping "Are You Lonely?" Patti LaBelle's agile soprano alternately soars and seeks out gritty corners, while Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash providing airtight, in-your-face harmonies. The glam-inflected "Space Children" and "Nightbird," a theatrical ballad, ...

| | Dick Clark An Evening Of Piano Jazz CD (2005)
Christmas
$17.09 An Evening of Piano Jazz features Dick Clark's musical artistry demonstrating his high intensity, passionate performance style. This album was recorded live in a sold out concert held at the Sea Ranch Club in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on April 10th of 2005. The performance was dedicated to his two most admired jazz pianists, Oscar Peterson and Gene Harris.Musicians say that Dick's a "cookin jazz pianist who performs with tremendous energy clearly showing the influence of both Peterson and Harris." Former Count Basie drummer and jazz great, Duffy Jackson says that Dick "just digs in and finds that groove!"Probably the most unique aspect of this performance is the fact that Dick performed all of the tracks on the album himself. He pre-recorded the bass, guitar, strings, and drum fill tracks prior to the concert on his Kawai Digital Grand Piano and performed the piano tracks live. People were amazed how Dick was able to achieve such a swinging, on top of the beat feel when the parts were pre-recorded and not performed with live musicians. Being both a piano and bass player, Dick has a keen conceptual understanding of those instruments, how to play them, and make it all swing. The Sea Ranch Club Concert was presented to a broad spectrum of musical enthusiasts. Certain tunes performed clearly highlighted Dick's tremendous influence by Peterson and Harris. In a Peterson style, "Night Train" quickly gets into a down home groove. A Harris style "C-Jam Blues" heats up the tempo, with a strong on top of the beat feel, "Satin Doll" gets right into a straight forward swing, and the Neal Hefti arrangement of "Shiny Stockings" builds even more excitement for the concert. In addition to the tunes performed in the style of Peterson and Harris, Dick performed his special arrangement of "Georgia on My Mind" in tribute to the late Ray Charles. Also featured were two well-known latin jazz standards, "Wave" and "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" both written by Antonio Carlos Jobim and a beautiful ballade, "Like Someone In Love." The concert finale was Dick's arrangement of Paul Anka's "My Way" that brought the audience to their feet in a standing ovation ...
