(4 Customer Reviews)
Fresh out of Marilyn Manson's band, guitarist John5 wasted no time issuing his solo debut, 2004's Vertigo. And for Manson disciples expecting the album to strictly follow to the game plan that John5 followed with his previous employer, you're sure to be in for a surprise. While there are tracks that are certainly Manson-esque, John5 shows that he's one of the more versatile guitar pickers on the scene today, as more than half the album wouldn't sound out of place being played on-stage at the Grand Ole Opry. Set the CD on "random play" and you're sure to fool others into thinking it's a compilation of several top guitar shredders. Things kick off with a pair of tracks that are what you'd expect from a former Marilyn Manson guitarist: the over-the-top shredfest "Needles, CA" and the riff rocker "Feisty Cadavers." But this soon proves to be a completely false assumption, as evidenced by such bluegrass ditties as "Sugar Foot Rag" and a cover of "Sweet Georgia Brown," the square dance-esque title track, and a blues-rock track that brings to mind the "guitar duel" between Steve Vai and Ralph Macchio in Crossroads, "Pulling Strings." Although some may automatically write off Mr. 5 due to his ghoulish makeup and attire, Vertigo will certainly please fans of such technically proficient shredders as Steve Vai and Steve Morse. ~ Greg Prato

| Vertigo Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) This is my GOD! John 5 is simply the best guitarist in the world. I love this man! And his new album is coming out soon! Submitted by dimmu_borgir_cradle_of_filth666 (Mesa, AZ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Spacehalo, just chill man, it's good music. I guess his copy didn't have the sticker on it that reads- "John 5 is an underrated guitar giant. It is rare to hear a musician fuse various styles & create a unique blend & brand all his own.It takes balls but that's what is needed to be truly original."
Steve Vai
Great Hard Guitar Riffs ....nuff said.

John Can Do THAT?!?!? This album is incredible I am a Manson fan and I find this amazing compared to what he used to do. His riffs and solos in Manson were amazing but these... These are god like!!! 5/5 Submitted by Seppel (Winnipeg, MB, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Smack yer ass, but do it nice.... I'm not sure exactly what freaks me out more: the idea that this was Manson's guitarist, or the fact that he plays bluegrass!!!
Either way, my preconceptions are immediately blown away. First coupla tunes rock hard and show some knuckle-busting guitar work...
As for the remainder, there's an alternating mix of dude-rock and chick-swing (a.k.a. it's heavy, then...'less heavy'....). Dude, sorry! I just can't cope with the fact that this dude can spit out Metallica-like riffs and then go into some...uh...square-dance revival stuff...but with super-wicked guitar dominating it all!!!
I'm confused. I love it...but then again, I only kinda "like" it, a lot.
Just grab your corpse, and hope she's got some nice dancin' shoes on. Just don't swing her too fast, or she'll get "vertigo".

Purchase Vertigo CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | An Evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess CD (2000)
Vertigo album
$10.59 Evening with John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess is an unheralded recording by Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment alumnus John Petrucci, and Jordan Rudess is a unique entry in the Dream Theater family discography. Recorded live in Nyack, New York, the duo performed a mixed set of acoustic and electric (guitar only) compositions. Both players are world-class musicians, but Rudess in particular demonstrates his well-rounded skills, proving why he is an in-demand session player for the likes of David Bowie and Paul Winter. Petrucci too ...

Vertigo songs
$11.05 Steve Vai remains an eclectic rogue in the world of guitar virtuosos. While his staggering chops precede him, Vai is known for favoring artistic, emotional expression over blazing six-string shredding just for its own sake. With an ensemble that includes bassist Billy Sheehan, drummer Jeremy Colson, and percussionist Gregg Bissonette, Vai presents his first new studio work since 1999's THE ULTRA ZONE.

| | John 5 Songs For Sanity CD (2005)
Vertigo album
$13.49 As a hired gun for such renowned hard rockers as Rob Halford, David Lee Roth, and Marilyn Manson, guitarist John5 got to show his six-string skills -- but only to a degree. With the focus mainly on songwriting, he wasn't able to shred away at will. This all changed when John5 started issuing solo albums, such as his 2005 effort, Songs for Sanity. Issued a year after 2004's Vertigo, ...

| | Laverne & Shirley Laverne & Shirley Sing CD (1976)
Vertigo music CDs
$11.59 Several months after making their first guest appearance on the hit television show Happy Days, the characters of Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney -- as portrayed by Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams, respectively -- got their own prime-time network series. Laverne & Shirley became the first Happy Days spin-off [aside: Joni Loves Chachi...hello...anyone?] and in short order was more popular than the original. The show's unexpected success yielded, among other things, Laverne & Shirley Sing (1976). While the actresses are prominently featured on the LP jacket, their contributions seem to have been primarily in spirit rather than in voice. This dozen-song long-player was the brainchild of promo man Pete Bennett. After a few legal snafus, he was able to assemble some of the best session musicians, including Wrecking Crew stalwarts Hal Blaine (drums), Plas Johnson (tenor sax), and Steve Douglas (baritone sax). The female vocal leads, for the most part, were also handled by some of the best in the biz. These include the likes of Melissa Manchester, Diana Canova, and the soulful Waters Family. The musicians were under the direction of famed pop music arranger Jimmie Haskell and the project's music coordinator, Michael McKean -- who played Lenny of "Lenny & Sqiggy" fame -- was also the author of the tune "Oh Gee," one of only two original compositions on the album. In keeping with the show's late-'50s/early-'60s backdrop, the vast majority of the material covered on Laverne & Shirley Sing consists of slightly modernized arrangements of early rock & roll classics. Among the notable covers are Fats Domino's "I'm Walkin'," the Essex's "Easier Said Than Done," the Crystals' "Da Do Run Run," the Four Freshmen's "Graduation Day," and the Everly Brothers' "All I Have to Do Is Dream." Decidedly more maudlin is the dialogue "More From Our Yearbook," which does feature the actresses reading corny and scripted entries from a mock high-school yearbook. A careful listen will reveal that the names mentioned are actually folks involved with the production. While these stacks of wax might not get props from a musical vantage point, as a timepiece of a much simpler era -- both in music as well as television -- few can fault the unbridled schmaltz of Laverne & Shirley Sing. ~ Lindsay Planer

| | Simon & Garfunkel Sounds Of Silence CD (1966) Bonus Tracks; Japan
Vertigo album
$24.45 Though it was their second album, SOUNDS OF SILENCE was the record that introduced Simon & Garfunkel to the world at large. When the original, acoustic version of the title tune (included on the debut album) was given a rock sheen here, courtesy of a hastily added electric backing track, folk-rock was invented, and Paul and Art were catapulted to superstardom. The songs here follow in that electrified direction for the most part, with the widescreen irony of "Blessed" buoyed by plangent guitar and ...
