| | Daniel Johnston 1990 CD Daniel Johnston Discography of CDs
When several albums of Daniel Johnston's homemade recordings appeared in the late '80s (including the wonderful YIP/JUMP MUSIC), it created a significant buzz in music circles. Studio owner Mark Kramer was quickly on the scene, bringing Johnston to his own Shimmy-Disc label for this fine album. 1990 is a collection of extremely polished and staggeringly honest odes to love, comic book heroes, and music. Steve Shelley and Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth accompany Johnston on "Spirit World Rising," but most of the set finds Johnston alone at the piano or guitar. His version of Lennon and McCartney's "Got To Get You Into My Life" has never been covered with this degree of conviction, streamlined down to its essential rhythmic core.
Personnel: Daniel Johnston (vocals, various instruments, guitar, piano); Lee Ranaldo (guitar); Steve Shelley (drums).

1990 album
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, ...

| | Chicago X CD (1976) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
1990 album
$6.29 Although it was their tenth release Chicago X (1976) was actually the band's eighth studio effort -- as Chicago IV (1972) had been a live set from Carnegie Hall and Chicago IX (1975), which precedes this disc, was their first best-of collection. Musically, the combo had effectively abandoned their extended free-form jazz leanings for more succinct pop songs. That is not to say that the band couldn't rock, because they could as evidenced by the Terry Kath (guitar/vocals) full-tilt rave-up "Once or Twice," which commences the album. The hot brass section bows deeply and respectfully to their Muscle Shoals counterparts as Kath does his best funky Otis Redding vocal. Showing his tremendous depth of field, Kath bookends the LP with the empowering and positive "Hope for Love." In between those two extremes are some of Chicago's best-known works -- such as Peter Cetera's (bass/vocals) chart-topping light rock epic "If You Leave Me Now" and Robert Lamm's (keyboards/vocals) "Another Rainy Night in New York City." The latter side also reveals a minor motif, as it is a Latin-based song about the Big Apple. It follows in the footsteps of the improv-heavy "Italian from New York" from their previous studio effort, the fusion-filled Chicago VII (1974). Lamm contributes a few other tucked-away classics to Chicago X as well -- such as the aggressive and sexy "You Get It Up." There are also a pair from James Pankow(trombone/vocals) in the form of the syncopated "You Are on My Mind" -- which crossed over onto both the adult contemporary as well as pop music charts. His other composition is the classy brass of "Skin Tight." The upfront horn interjections and overall augmentation are akin to the sound made famous by their West Coast Tower of Power contemporaries. As a majority of their previous efforts had done -- all sans their debut -- Chicago X was a Top Ten album and "If You Leave Me Now" became a double Grammy winner, for both Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo Group or Chorus and Best Arrangement ...

| | Thousand Knives Of Fire Last Train To Scornsville CD (2008) Import
1990 album
$36.09 The only thing about A Thousand Knives of Fire that's over the top is their name; in all other respects, this group of New Jersey stoner rock veterans likes to keep things simple and their Southern-tinged hard rock as grounded as that packed dirt parking lot, outside your nearest watering hole. In fact, the quintet's debut album, The Last Train to Scornsville, rocks so earnestly and unassumingly, that listeners looking strictly for eye-catching fireworks will surely slip into a coma -- all the better for more patient and appreciative patrons who can then rest a cold one on their heads. Getting right down to business, opening shot, "One Eyed Jack" settles quickly on a mid-paced groove and is perfectly content to sit there; while subsequent offerings like "Hey Buddy" and "Nothing in Life's for Free" barely break a sweat as they roll along to their effortless slow blues. Taking things up a notch, the amusingly sardonic "She's Yours" matches heightened heavy rock intensity to its biting words, and album standout, "Leeds County Devil," riffs and raffs its way down Hwy 95, burning rubber as it goes. Its lyrics may center 'round a flat tire, but the song itself never downshifts ...
