Rock opera and punk are usually two mutually exclusive musical styles. Then again, Green Day has never followed any rock rulebook, so it's not entirely surprising that the trio crafted a punk-rock opera that takes the Bush administration and its policies to task. It doesn't get any more pointed than a couplet from the frenetic title cut that states, "I'm not a part of a redneck agenda/Now everybody do the propaganda!"
Under the guidance of any other group of agitated punks, the results of such an undertaking could easily become didactic. But with creative spearhead Billie Joe Armstrong at the helm, AMERICAN IDIOT is melodically driven, with the kind of intellectual bent that allows for a pair of mini-operas, "Jesus of Suburbia" and "Homecoming." Trimmed with a light sprinkling of piano and a big guitar sound occasionally reminiscent of Mott the Hoople, the former skewers the hypocrisy that can pervade small-town life. The latter is equally effective, as clever time changes and sonic flourishes (glockenspiel, doo-wop harmonies, honking saxophone) serve as an intriguing counterpoint to the band's hook-laced riffs.

from punk to rock!
A tour de Force from Greenday. No longer do they thump out that aged new punk sound, these guys have moved on upto hard rock. Its great to hear such incisive lyrics in todays music - proving that not just M&M is capable of witty piss taking!

In the days before there was grunge or thrash, a movement called punk arose as a populist response to the conformity of corporate rock, and a return to the garage roots of the music. Punk, new wave...whatever you want to call it, the movement was quickly co-opted by the major labels and radio as the best bands quickly evaporated into the pop mainstream while the rest faded into obscurity or day jobs.
"I'm not growing up, I'm just burning out, and I stepped in line to walk amongst the dead," singer-guitarist Billy Joe screams on the opening "Burnout," enunciating a timely slacker sentiment over a decidedly punk trio track, roaring through your speakers like a freight train powered by old Ramones and Clash records. One can hear the complaints of DOOKIE articulated in a thousand smoke-filled bedrooms throughout America. On "Longview," tongue not so firmly implanted in cheek, they extend their view of slacker apathy to apply to the fading joys of masturbation, but quickly answer their own ennui with the real world complaints of "Welcome To Paradise," begging the question, is there anything out there?
On a song like "She," Green Day seemingly answers all the questions of apathy with a furious groove and lyrics that urge listeners "locked up in a world that's been planned for you" to "smash the silence with the brick of self-control." And with "Sassafrass Roots" Green Day ups the slacker ante dealt up by Beck on "Loser" by asking, "So why are you alone wasting your time, when you could be with me wasting your time...may I waste your time, ...

Hard-rock juggernauts Guns 'N' Roses arrived as rock & roll saviors in a dark time of generic hair metal and bloated pop. With only five studio albums to draw from (one being the all-covers SPAGHETTI INCIDENT), nearly a third of the material on GREATEST HITS is unsurprisingly devoted to other people's songs. Inclusions range from a dramatic version of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heavens Door" and an outsized take on Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die" to punk classic "Ain't It Fun" and doo-wop nugget "Since I Don't Have You."
The band's original songs, however, are the heart of G'N'R's appeal. Start with the quintessential heavy-rock anthem "Welcome to the Jungle." Amid the thunderous time-keeping and tasty riffing are slinky grooves, sexy swagger, and quite an aura of danger. The acoustic "Patience" found these tattooed bad boys showing off a softer side, while archetypal power-ballad "Sweet Child O' Mine" is a perfect hybrid of sentiment and soaring guitar solos. Historically, it's a tricky endeavor for the singer from an enormously successful band to embark on a solo career. Gwen Stefani, the glamorous vocalist for No Doubt, sidesteps the issue on her first solo album, LOVE, ANGEL, MUSIC, BABY, by largely eschewing the No Doubt sound. In its place, there's a strong emphasis on the R&B and hip-hop flavors that were hinted at in preceding No Doubt records. Much in the manner of their previous album, ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND, U2 largely strips down the stadium-sized approach of years past on the provocatively titled HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB. Whether they were inspired by the garage-rock revival that took place in between the two records, or just felt like making some visceral rock & roll, this 2004 release has as much unbridled energy as such early U2 benchmarks as BOY or WAR. The album starts with a bang, courtesy of the charging, angular "Vertigo," whose driving bass line and shouted vocals announce the band's intentions in no uncertain terms.
