After departing Jive Records for the seemingly less-restrictive climes of Koch, Hed P.E. decided to take full advantage of its newfound freedom by delivering ONLY IN AMERIKA, an uncompromising album sure to infuriate parents and inspire undying loyalty among fans. Chock full of more swearing, misogyny, homophobia, and all manner of angry effrontery than even the most over-the-top Psychopathic Records release, a clean version of this disc would probably contain nothing more than a few random blips.
Of course, what better sonic bed for all this rambunctious verbiage than an ear-splitting and raucous combination of gut-wrenching guitars, distorted bass, and thrash-metal-style double-bass drumming, matched with creepy samples and hard-edged turntable work? Oddly enough, this unholy ruckus is often exceedingly catchy. "Wake Up," with its expletive-touting shout-along chorus, will likely stick in listeners' heads for days. Similarly, the eerie, serpentine guitar riff of "The Box" seems a perfect fit for the song's stark appraisal of the record industry and the "dumbing down" of culture. A challenging and bracing work by any standard, ONLY IN AMERIKA is not for the easily offended.
Time, time, time Well the first time I listened to this album, i nearly threw it out. I can take a bit of offensive lyrics, but this was just intentional. When it dawned on me, I decided to listen to it again, and on my home stereo system, which is nothing less than incredible.
This album, is almost like a B-side album, which they explore a number of different styles and techniques, and man I cant put it down.
This is a great album to listen to when you have just sat in a hairdressers and listened to the crap played on commercial radio Submitted by Andrew (Katherine, NT, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 1 of 1 found this helpful.
