A major force in West Coast punk since the early 1980s, Social Distortion became the longest-lasting of their peers, with perhaps only Bad Religion for company. Through a daunting history of ups and downs, drug problems, personnel shifts, and worse, the band soldiered on fearlessly, never sacrificing the righteous fury of their sound. Following a layoff of eight years (during which time singer Mike Ness pursued a solo career), SEX, LOVE AND ROCK 'N' ROLL was the group's first foray into the studio since the death of founding guitarist Dennis Danell in 2000.
With longtime bassist John Maurer and the revitalizing power of a new guitarist and drummer, Social Distortion maintains the lean, propulsive punk attack that made them famous. While the group's trademark sound is a Ramones-meet-Johnny Cash punk/country amalgam, the twangier leanings are largely left behind here in favor of a more straightforward--still characteristically unrelenting--rock & roll approach. Beyond that, the biggest new development is the pop quotient. While SD was never a stranger to hooks or melody, a couple of tracks here could easily be placed into the repertoire of any number of pop performers and given a convincing high-gloss arrangement. Regardless, the band plays even the poppiest material hard, fast, and loud, as per their pure punk roots, and Ness still concentrates on his perennial lyrical subjects--hard times and the power of rock & roll to see people through their trials and tribulations. It sure seems to have worked for him.

Anyway They do sound more mature than in their previous albums. Submitted by hmingguang2 (Singapore) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
good stuff Sounds like you would expect Social D to sound like at this point. Not unlike white trash, white light, white heat, which I loved. Good midtempo songs revisiting familiar lyrical terrain. One suprise is that new guitarist Johnny Two Bags gets a chance to contribute some songwriting previously it had always ben a one man show with Social D.

You May Rejoice, Rock N Roll Is Back... Yeah this disc is dedicated to late guitarist Dennis Darnell, and it is very personal. But above all, it friggin' ROCK!!! If this CD doesn't break this band into the mainstream, we might as well as end it now. The record for 2004... Submitted by sonicmikestephens (Prescott , AZ USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$18.55 With a nomination as “Songwriter of the Year” at the 2006 Juno Awards (along with the likes of Neil Young, Ron Sexsmith, Kathleen Edwards and The Arcade Fire), it’s pretty safe to say that Canada knows a fair amount about Joel Plaskett. If you’re not Canadian, it might be instructive to have a little background information – so here it is…EARLY DAYSBorn in Berwick, Nova Scotia, Joel has been playing in bands of one sort or another since adolescence. While still in high school, now in Halifax, Joel – with friends Ian McGettigan, Rob Benvie and Cliff Gibb – formed Thrush Hermit, a band that would become synonymous with the youthful scene that followed in the footsteps of Sloan and the SubPop signings from the region: Eric’s Trip, Hardship Post and jale. The band started recording as young teens and released their first record – Smart Bomb - on Sloan’s Murderecords label. Extensive touring and teenage exuberance eventually found them signed to U.S. major Electra Records but an A&R shift in the company ended that after one album. Their independent follow up, Clayton Park, was the most played record at Canadian college radio in 1999. And then The Hermit split…RECENT PASTPlaskett quickly moved on to a “solo” career and the release of his first post Hermit project, In Need of Medical Attention, immediately established him as a force on the Canadian indie landscape. A decidedly lo-fi effort, In Need Of Medical Attention nonetheless garnered rave reviews here and internationally. At this point Joel decided to put a band together and that band – Joel Plaskett Emergency – was responsible for the next release, Down ...
