The Armenian-born Charles Aznavour was one of France's greatest talents in the postwar era. His popularity with his adopted countrywomen and men lasted from 1950 until the 1980s. Jezebel was one of the first big recordings for Aznavour. Recorded in 1953, it reveals the singer to be not quite in command of his own style of delivery, instead imitating a combination of earlier performers such as Maurice Chevalier, the American Louis Prima, and various calypso singers who were plentiful in Paris at the time. Chevalier and Prima? What a combination. Aznavour, before becoming such a fine ballad singer, was attempting to be a swinger, so he used bits and pieces of Chevalier's accessible vaudeville persona along with the emergent hipsterism of Prima. And it works. Check out "Couches dans le Roin," "Intoxique," with its Grappelli/Reinhardt groove, and of course, the title track, with its faux flamenco intro and comically dramatic melody line. There is also the wondrous "Poker," which is arranged like a Sinatra tune for the French theater and comes off like a conversational Prima tune with its near scat and falling eights in the bridge. This is an awesome record for its pure hedonistic value. Lounge lizards would be well advised to keep an eye and ear out for this baby. Perhaps it should have been called "Aznavour Slums It." ~ Thom Jurek Charles Aznavour Jezebel Songs Jezebel Review

$6.09 | | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Jezebel album
$17.79 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade, and there's no threat of the album becoming ponderous either as the economical tracklist and purposeful ...

Jezebel CD music
$16.09 When SONIC BOOM was released, it had been over a decade since the last Kiss studio album, so expectations were understandably high. In addition, the intervening period had seen the band fire two of its founding members for the second time, only to replace them with sidemen wearing Ace Frehley and ...

| | Robin Holcomb Big Time CD (2002)
Jezebel songs
$15.05 There are a total of six years between Robin Holcomb's mostly instrumental Little Three and 2002's The Big Time. But one has to reach back even further for her last batch of original songs, Rockabye in 1992. While such large gaps seem like a lifetime in an artist's career, Holcomb just picks up where she left off. Her two renditions of traditional material from the Anthology of American Folk Music are noteworthy if for no other reason than how little they have to do with the originals. "A Lazy Farmer Boy" might be described as avant-garde folk, and one has to wonder if the presence of Danny Barnes from the Bad Livers has perversely affected this rendition. Another interesting connection is the presence of guitarist Bill Frisell and bassist Keith Lowe, both also on the Nonesuch roster. These musicians build a layered soundscape on pieces like "Engine 143," providing lots of space for Holcomb's evocative voice to float in. These arresting arrangements also work well on her self-penned ...
| | Nashville Pussy Say Something Nasty CD (2002)
Jezebel album
$7.15 With such riff-rock merchants as Aerosmith, AC/DC, and Guns N' Roses taking extended periods of time between albums by the late '90s, a whole new wave of disciples began to emerge in the U.S., including Buckcherry and Nashville Pussy. The latter band never flirted with ...
| | Cross Canadian Ragweed CD (2002)
Jezebel CD music
$6.59 Some time ago, much of what used to be called folk-rock/singer/songwriter and light pop/rock music retreated to Nashville and Austin and started to be considered as vaguely country in style. If Cross Canadian Ragweed's major-label debut album is to be taken as an example, what used to be thought of as mainstream or classic rock is doing much the same thing. The Oklahoma-based rock quartet, who issued four low-budget albums independently, is here working for a new Nashville entity called Universal South, an imprint of the Universal Music Group run by Tony Brown, who brought such mavericks as Lyle Lovett and Steve Earle to Universal's MCA Records when he was there, and Tim DuBois, formerly of Arista Nashville and a proponent of Texas songwriters like Robert Earl Keen. In Cross Canadian Ragweed, ...
