| | Devin The Dude To Tha X-Treme CD (2004)
All American Gangsta album
$14.35 Making good on the "dude" part of his name, the good-natured rapper Devin the Dude eases through a fun and relaxed set of songs on TO THA X-TREME. A laid-back vibe (at least partially due to some serious smoke inhalation) pervades the album, making it a welcome change of pace from more gruff, heavier hip-hop. Devin hilariously introduces the disc on "Devin's Medley," and then slides into the smooth, electronic-tinged title track. Other highlights include the dreamy "Right Now," which boasts a gentle acoustic guitar line and light percussion, and the entertaining stoner-meets-cop tale of "Go Fight Some Other Crime." By mixing deft pop melodies with tight rap beats and clever rhymes, Devin has crafted one of 2004's most enjoyable hip-hop records.

| | Fatback Band Fatbackin': The Perception Sessions CDs (2001)
All American Gangsta album
$17.15 At their best moments, the Fatback Band were untouchable. There were moments in the group's canon where everything just seemed to fall into place, as if divine intervention was looking over the studio. Fatbackin' covers some of these moments, compiling cuts of gold from their first three records on Perception (they later signed to Polydor in the mid-'70s). Obvious nods to the sound of the time aside, Fatback had the system down -- taking influences from their contemporaries, filtering them with a Latin flair and proto-disco shuffle, and making something uniquely their own. Most of these records are hard to find and out of print, so Fatback fans will want to pick this one up, because it's simply essential. ~ Rob Theakston
