Few jazz pianists could ever hope to rival the technical mastery of Art Tatum. From the 1930s on through the `50s, Tatum's dazzling facility made it seem as if two pianists ...
| | Roy Hargrove Emergence CD (2009)
Play On Words album
$13.99 Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has been in some exotic musical environments in the past -- from his various quintets, quartets, his Afro-Cuban outfit Crisol, and his funk band the RH Factor, he's pretty much done it all. And while he's played in various big bands before, he's never led his own until now. Emergence on the Groovin' High imprint features a 19-member big band, playing a set of 11 standards and originals by Hargrove and bandmembers as well as a track written for the leader by none other than pianist Chucho Valdés -- who doesn't appear here. The roots for this project go all the way back to 1995 when Hargrove formed a big band to play the New York Jazz Festival. The group went through many metamorphoses when he played a series of club and festival gigs over the intervening years. The set begins with "Velera," a tune written and arranged by Hargrove. It's a ballad in modal style with extended harmonies and a lovely textural palette. The composer employs restraint to bring forth his gorgeous melody. It's followed by "Ms. Garvey, Ms. Garvey," written and arranged by baritone saxophonist Jason ...

| | Tim Armacost Live At Smalls CD (1998)
Play On Words music CDs
$12.89 This is a burning set recorded live at one of New York's hottest jazz clubs, Smalls. The presence of the great Tom Harrell on trumpet and flugelhorn ratchets up the intensity, but the lesser-known quintet members -- Gerald Cannon on bass, Shingo Okudaira on drums, and the delightful Jonny King on piano -- turn in excellent performances as well. Tim Armacost's tenor sound is rich and his solos are steeped in classic ...
| | Bruce Barth Somehow It's True CD (2000)
Play On Words songs
$15.25 Bruce Barth's third Double-Time release features Terell Stafford on trumpet and flugel, Adam Kolker on tenor and soprano sax (and alto clarinet), Ugonna Okegwo on bass, Duduka DaFonseca on percussion, and Billy Hart on drums. In a rather ingenious move, Barth intersperses three 30-second solo piano takes of Monk's "Criss Cross" throughout the program, finally giving us a nearly full-length take as the finale. Furthering the Monk theme, he also offers a trio rendition of "We See" and a full-band version of "Light Blue." Two standard bossas also appear: a mellow trio reading of "Estate" and a lively take on Jobim's "Triste" in seven. There are only three Barth originals, but they range widely, from the 6/8 modal fury of "Tom Tom Thing" to the melodic solo piano feature "Somehow It's True" to the quasi-free-form "Solitude," the last of which is reprised toward the end of the program. The consistently stellar playing and the uncommon ...

$32.85 | | Martin Sasse Close Encounter CD (2004) (Import) Germany
Play On Words album
$18.19 Close Encounter is Martin Sasse's follow up to the well-received Groovy Affair in 2003. Like that album, the group has invited a high-powered guest -- altoist Vincent Herring -- to sit in. The match, like adding guitarist Peter Bernstein on Groovy Affair, is an inspired one that throws the proceedings into high gear. Except for Harold Arlen's "Over the Rainbow," all of these pieces are originals, written or co-written by pianist Martin Sasse, bassist Henning Gailing, drummer Hendrik Smock, and Herring. The album kicks off with "Don't Let It Go," an airy, quiet groove that includes some lovely solo work by both Herring and Sasse. "Blue Herring" captures a more bop-ish mood, allowing Herring to really cut loose against Sasse's block chords and Gailing and Smock's propulsive ...
| | Anthony Wonsey Blues For Hiroshi CD (2004)
Play On Words CD music
$13.79 Anthony Wonsey was already one of the top pianists of his generation, but he developed his chops considerably over the five-year stretch since his previous date as a leader. In a trio set with bassist Richie Goods and drummer Tony Reedus, Wonsey delivers a mix of standards, classic jazz compositions, and his delightful originals, making for a well-paced CD. Wonsey's jaunty take of "Nobody Else But Me" shows off his striding left hand. The brisk arrangement of "Just You, Just Me" has a dissonant flavor reminiscent of Thelonious Monk, yet it swings like mad. He retains the lyricism of Bill Evans' signature tune, "Waltz for Debby," while also adding his own dazzling touch. He introduces Jimmy Rowles' "The Peacocks" with a lush descending run, then delves into a richly textured arrangement as the rhythm section joins him. His hard-charging take of Charlie Parker's blues "Relaxin' at Camarillo" salutes Tommy Flanagan and Elvin Jones, who recorded it on Flanagan's album Overseas. Wonsey's originals are also remarkable. ...
