| | Toby Keith American Ride CD (2009)
Fallen Angels
$13.59 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the sly "If I Had One," and the heavy blues stomp "Loaded" -- but spends more time on the softer side, even when he kicks up a bit of dust on the dancefloor on "You Can't Read My Mind" or does a funny, respectful salute to military life on "Ballad of Balad." In other words, the real touchstone for the rest of the record is "Tender as I Wanna Be," where he lets his guard down and lets the romance flow. This doesn't turn AMERICAN RIDE into a schizophrenic jumble, as Keith has always balanced these two extremes, but after spending a little bit more time swaggering than wooing, he's back to crooning and it's amiable and appealing.

| | Buckcherry Live & Loud 2009 CD (2009)
Fallen Angels
$8.49 When Buckcherry hit the scene in the mid-'90s, few would have predicted that the raunchy, stripper pole/retro-hair metal outfit had a 15-year career ahead of it, let alone a Grammy nomination. Despite the nearly complete dissolution of the band in 2002, Buckcherry managed to embrace the subversive tenacity of chief inspiration Mötley Crüe by ignoring the naysayers and keeping the train running with a pair of well-received albums that successfully rebooted them back into the biz. Like their ...
| | Tool Undertow CD (1993)
Fallen Angels
$13.15 UNDERTOW is an example of nimble heavy metal in the angtsy/artsy tradition of Jane's Addiction. Tool favors medium tempos, which gives several of the group's songs a modern-day Black Sabbath feel, but fortunately lead singer Maynard James mostly steers clear of the usual quasi-operatic yowling favored by most metal ...
| | Motorhead Ace Of Spades CD (1980)
Fallen Angels
$9.99 Feted by bikers, respected by punks, Motorhead exemplified rock's outlaw chic. On Ace Of Spades their speed-metal attack exploded with unparalleled fury. Thrashing guitars and primitive drums underpinned vocalist/bassist Lemmy, whose blooded-throat roar enhances ...
| | Korn Follow The Leader CD (1998)
Fallen Angels
$8.99 Tracks 1 through 12 are silent and are each five-seconds long. The album's track listing begins with number 13, "It's On!"
Like Fear Factory and a host of others, Korn combines streamlined metal with ominous industrial touches and an undercurrent of hip-hop rhythm. FOLLOW THE LEADER is an urban nightmare, as unrelentingly dark as Onyx, Tool or Nine Inch Nails, and stylistically indebted to all three. The twin guitars of Munky and Head provide the requisite rock quotient, but throughout the album the band ventures beyond heavy rock cliches. The churning, jackhammer rhythms are leavened by subtle synthesizer work and occasionally the band falls into a bracing hip-hop beat, allowing them to show off the hard-edged syncopation that's at the core of their very visceral sound. Fostering the rap influence, Ice Cube makes ...
| | Life & Crimes Of Alice Cooper CDs (1999) Box Set
Fallen Angels
$43.05 Includes an 80-page booklet with liner notes by Alice Cooper, Michael Bruce, John Lydon, Elton John, Dick Clark, Bono, Penn Jillette, Mike Myers, David Johansen, Joey Ramone and Burt Bacharach.
Shock rock legend Alice Cooper has been making audiences squirm for over 30 years and his wealth of material unquestionably befits a box set. Nearly a decade in the making, this 4 CD package is everything an Alicephile could want. Demos, unreleased tracks, alternate takes, live material, and pre-Alice are all here. All the artist's eras are covered in depth. Cooper completists will marvel at the 1965-1967 tunes (pre-Alice groups The Spiders and The Nazz).
This is followed by mandatory classics such as "Eighteen," "School's Out," "Billion Dollar Babies" and "Under My Wheels" (another version also appears with Axl, Slash and Izzy from Guns n' Roses). "I Love The Dead," and "Cold Ethyl" also flesh out the 70's era material. The glam metal explosion in the 80's helped resurge Alice's career, as "He's Back (The Man Behind The Mask)" and "Poison" introduced Cooper to a new generation. Guest appearances by Ozzy Osbourne, Nicki Sixx, Rob Zombie and Chris Cornell round out the 90's. THE LIFE is a must for Cooper diehards, and is recommended for everyone else.
Compilation producer: Brian Nelson.
Engineers include: Dave Oxman, Loy Clingman, Dick Kune.
Personnel includes: Alice Cooper (vocals, harmonica); Rob Zombie (vocals, guitar, bass); Chris Cornell, Axl Rose, Betty ...
