The younger sister of pop star/reality-TV icon Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson has done nothing to hide her well-documented connection. However, to assume Ashlee is a carbon copy of her superstar sibling or simply trying to ride Jessica's coattails would be plain wrong. While Jessica sings straightforward, gentle pop tunes, Ashlee's music tends towards the angst-ridden and self-analytical, and where Jessica's vocals are light and bouncy, Ashlee explodes with a teen-punk roar.
With her debut record, AUTOBIOGRAPHY, Ashlee unveils a soul-searching sound that lies somewhere between the precocious explorations of Avril Lavigne and the jaded wanderings of Alanis Morissette. The opening single "Pieces of Me" features an ever-changing musical landscape, with Ashlee's powerful voice fading in and out like the love story of the song itself. The title track boasts a sinister guitar opening and a crunching rock riff offset by a huge melodic hook. AUTOBIOGRAPHY may surprise some people, but it's simply a solid pop-rock debut by a talented artist, regardless of famous family ties.
UK pressing of the teen-popstar's #1 debut album includes two bonus tracks, 'Harder Everyday' (international (not U.S.) bonus track) & 'Sorry' (UK bonus track). Geffen,
U.K. edition adds two tracks.Entertainment Weekly (p.77) - "Her AUTOBIOGRAPHY is packed with insidiously catchy songs..." - Grade: B-

Needs to mature a little The first couple of songs on the album are catchy...bait! The remaining songs then end in the bubbly-teen type of music. Can't compare to Amy Lee's voice or a Michelle Branch. Submitted by egarcia7767 (Houston, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 1 of 2 found this helpful. This review is for a different format.
This girl rocks! Don't let the fact that she's Jessica Simpson's sister help or hinder you in your decision to buy this CD. And if you didn't know they were sisters, it's probably because they are nothing alike. While Ashlee does have the same ability to belt out the vocals on this more rock than pop CD, it has a more of a rock edge than Jessica's love ballads ever hoped to have. Listen to Jessica to relax or go to sleep but if you want to rock out or get up and dance, this is the CD for you. I've had it since the day it was released and I haven't taken it out of my CD player yet. No wonder she's #1! Submitted by SarahBear133 (Cincinnati, OH) Was This Review Helpful?
