This sophomore Stone disc presents a deep stack of all-original soul songs that finds the Devon, England vocalist and her crew sounding a bit more contemporary. "You Had Me" pairs Stone's powerful voice with a clavinet, a dash of strings, and a funky beat for a track that wouldn't be out of place on a Beyonce record. The down-tempo material also works well, whether it's the call-and response slow jam "Jet Lag" or "Right to Be Wrong," with its Muscle Shoals vibe of crisp guitar licks and laidback organ. The UK native also successfully dabbles in reggae (the loping "Less Is More") and more gospel-flavored fare (the uplifting "Security"), stretching her expressive pipes beyond the emotive R&B that made her famous. With confidence and class, Stone secures her star status on MIND, BODY & SOUL.
For MIND, BODY & SOUL, released only a year after her 2003 debut, THE SOUL SESSIONS, Joss Stone conveys an incredible degree of musical maturity that goes far beyond her 17 years. Wisely, Stone reunites with many of the same R&B/soul names that helped make her first recording such a success, including Betty Wright, Latimore, and Timmy Thomas.
Personnel: Joss Stone (vocals); Nile Rodgers, A.J. Niilo (guitar); Tom "Bones" Malone (flugelhorn); Timmy Thomas, Benny Latimore (piano); Nir Zidkiyahu (Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizer); Angelo Morris, Angie Stone (Fender Rhodes piano); Raymond Angry (Clavinet, Hammond b-3 organ, Moog synthesizer); Jack Daley (bass guitar); Cindy Blackman, Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson (drums); Mike Mangini (programming); Betty Wright (background vocals).
Rolling Stone (p.99) - 3 stars out of 5 - "As on her last album, tasteful retro organs and wah-wah dominate this batch of originals....One of the strongest moments is a collaboration with songwriting legend Lamont Dozier..." Uncut (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Stone's technical prowess is unquestionable..." Vibe (p.166) - 3 1/2 discs out of 5 - "[D]eeply refreshing. Her capacity to summon a glorious, earthy past never feels like a nostalgia trip....Her enthusiasm makes it all feel new." UK meets Motown This young girl has a voice that powers and sours above a Kelly Clarkson or Fantasia Barrino. With the backings of Betty Wright, she far surpasses the average teenager. Her voice has strength and depth, much like Alicia Keys. She is a joy to listen to. Submitted by ddmcfarland (Tampa, FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Different Direction this album was the best i have ever heard. and im speaking legends also. i did not skip a track and i still dont. its amazing. vocals are amazing and so are the lyrics. the whole idea of each one of those songs takes you in a whole different direction from other artists but still has you attached. shes an amazing star. when this cd FIRST came out last year it was 11.99 but now its 20 at retail stores. shes extremely under rated. i wish everybody could get a copy of this album and hear this youngen go. shes captures you from the beggining to the end. especially the bonus song. its amazing its not even listed or even mentioned but i heard it i was in awe. $10.45 Though Ray Charles, one of the greatest singers of the 20th century, was never in need of vocal assistance, he was no stranger to duets either (one of his finest records is a duet album with Betty Carter). For as much of a musical giant as he was, Brother Ray knew how to share the spotlight, as evidenced by GENIUS LOVES COMPANY, his final project before his 2004 passing. In keeping with the eclectic nature of Charles's artistry, ...

$11.49 Between them all, you could try to count the instruments they play on your fingers, but you’d have to take off your shoes to finish up. You could also try playing “stump the band” with any kind of musical question you could think of and lose… badly. Take that new band The Afters and add a girl singer with some Kelly Clarkson-like chops, and the experience of a Sheryl Crow and you have Breathing Room. They straddle the fence between caring deeply and holding things loosely, between working in the trenches and keeping their faith before them. And for writing songs that speak to the believer and the doubter alike. Says good friend, Mike Elizondo, producer and musician for Dr. Dre, Fiona Apple, Nelly Furtado, Pink, and currently Maroon 5, “The Christian market needs a band like Breathing Room. These guys have got it all going on! And I also know their hearts are as genuine ...
