For a couple of years in the mid- to late 1980s, it sure must have felt good to be Robert Palmer. After building a solo career gradually for a decade, Palmer found himself reaping the benefits. Though Palmer had just achieved success with RIPTIDE producer Bernard Edwards, he opted to produce the follow-up to that platinum-selling record, HEAVY NOVA, himself.
Some songs are emphatically in the vein of Palmer's '80s solo work with Power Station, but there's an adult pop sensibility here also, that's more VH1 than MTV. He sings his first torch song (the touching "It Could Happen to You"), yodels on the Wimoweh-esque "Change His Ways," and shows he can still get real laid-back on the country-flavored "Disturbing Behavior." Nevertheless, stomping drums, plucked bass, and synth textures dominate on such funky tracks as "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming" and "Simply Irresistible." The single "She Makes My Day" sold well, and "Simply Irresistible" did even better.
Recorded at Logic Studios, Milan, Italy and Compass Point Studios, Bahamas.

| Heavy Nova Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Heavy Nova Solid Effort By Palmer Heavy Nova, Robert Palmer's ninth solo album, finds the singer attempting to satisfy all the various nitches of his ecclectic career. The dance friendly, guitar heavy hard rock that vaulted the singer to the top of charts in the mid 80's is aptly represented with "More Than Ever" (complete w/ a frenetic pounding percussion and guitar solo) and "Simply Irresistibe", the latter being one of the singer's biggest hit singles in the US. Palmer's afection for romantic standards is shown on his cover of Peggy Lee's classic "It Could Happen To You" and on the original composition "She Makes My Day" (the album's biggest hit in the UK). Meanwhile, Palmer finds time to embrace of more R&B friendly side w/ a cover of Jermaine Jackson's "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming" and slightly more hard rocking, edgy version of the Gap Band's "Early In The Moring" (an excellent cut and another US hit single). The juxtaposition of such different musical styles seems harsh at times, although once you get through the initial sock of the mood change each segment of the album has strength. There are a few throw away cuts that detract from the overall quality ("Disturbing Behavior" being the most obvious with it's overly simplistic lyric repeated constantly throughout the arrangement)of the album, but the material that is good is very good. Palmer even shows a sense of humor with an African influenced arrangement on "Change His Ways", a comical novelty song in which he clearly has fun (he even yodels!) while not taking himself too seriously. Overall this is a solid if not spectacular effort, a step behind Palmer's more challenging work on his 70's albums but still a good buy. Heavy Nova
$15.65 The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- that's exactly what's come to pass. The group's second release for Roadrunner, whose title apparently refers to "coming full circle" rather than any sort of goodbye, finds the latest iteration of Megadeth-- debuting new guitarist Chris Broderick(ex-Nevermore, Jag Panzer)--working primarily within their technical thrash comfort zone (think PEACE SELLS through RUST IN PEACE), with ...

Heavy Nova
$23.69 Of all the bands to emerge from the early `90s grunge explosion, Pearl Jam was both the longest-lived and most consistently interesting. After several albums that found the group taking an increasingly experimental direction, the Seattle quintet returned to its straight-ahead hard rock roots with 2006's self-titled effort. In 2009 however, Pearl Jam surprised fans again with an album containing some of the unit's catchiest, poppiest songs ever. According to lead vocalist Eddie Vedder, most of the new material was written prior to recording, which was a significant departure from the group's usual in-studio jamming method of composition. The result is one of ...

The album, entitled Stuart Smith's Heaven & Earth which features some of rock's top vocalists such as Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora, Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow) and Glenn Hughes from Deep Purple has been consistently hailed with rave reviews and is considered by some to be a classic rock mainstay. The CD has also become a much sought after item among collectors and rock aficionado's throughout Europe and Asia.Smith was classically trained from age seven and went on to be taught by Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore. He toured England & Europe extensively with his first professional band "Sidewinder" before moving to the States in 1983 where he joined the reformed "Sweet" and later formed the "Aliens of Extraordinary Ability" with Keith Emerson. In 1995 he put together Heaven & Earth. After the first release, Stuart was offered a second deal by European label Frontiers Records, known for signing some of Europe's top rock "n roll acts. By this time, Stuart had made the decision to put together a more cohesive band situation and had enlisted the help of drummer Richie Onori who had already played on the first release. Richie, a well known and respected drummer, has played with such rock icons as Rick Derringer, Louis Johnson, Bobby Kimball (Toto) and also played with Stuart in the group "Aliens of Extraordinary Ability" with Keith Emerson of "Emerson, Lake and Palmer".Stuart and Richie made the decision to go with guitarist/producer Howard Leese from Heart to produce the second album entitled "Windows to the World" which was released in 2001 (Frontiers Records) and again received rave reviews and solidified themselves in today's classic rock genre with their fan base growing ever larger throughout the world. In support of the release, the group toured worldwide and was received by large, enthusiastic crowds wherever they played.Heaven & Earth are now hard at work with Grammy/Emmy Award winning producer Dave Jenkins on their latest release entitled: "Screaming for Redemption" which is being recorded at their own recording studio (Wine Cellar Studios in Woodland Hills). The CD is projected for release later next year on their own label, Black Star Records. The new label was the next logical step in today's independent label environment and has already secured other signings which include Howard Leese of Heart. Others soon to be announced. With the bands strong European and Asian following and popularity firmly established, they are now breaking into the U.S. market, set on achieving the same level of success. Black Star Records, with distribution provided by Burnside Distribution Corp., has acquired the rights to the first CD (Stuart Smiths Heaven & Earth) and has released the CD as Heaven & Earth featuring Stuart Smith in the U.S. where it was never released, with two brand new bonus tracks featuring stunning vocal performances by Bobby Kimball of Toto and Joe Lynn Turner of Rainbow. The U.S. release date is January 18, 2005. A forthcoming release, Screaming for Redemption is scheduled for release later next year. The band has been out playing live around Southern California ...
