Mark Knopfler's first excursions outside of Dire Straits were film soundtracks, where his guitar mastery served him well. Starting in the mid-1990s, he embarked on a proper post-Straits solo career. By the time of 2004's SHANGRI-LA, Knopfler had almost entirely left behind the expansive instrumental textures of his former band in favor of a more straight-ahead singer/songwriter approach, which works wonderfully here. Knopfler keeps things low-key throughout most of SHANGRI-LA, with quietly intoned, often drolly sardonic lyrics, supple finger-picked guitar lines, and songs full of subtly crafted surprises.
There's a wealth of unusual topics on offer here; "Boom, Like That" is a first-person monologue by Knopfler in the voice of Ray Kroc, the man behind the McDonald's fast-food empire. The bluesy "Song for Sonny Liston" chronicles the famed boxer's brushes with the underworld. "Donegan's Gone" laments the passing of British folk/skiffle pioneer Lonnie Donegan, a key influence on Knopfler and scores of other British rockers. Departing from the more folk-oriented sound of its predecessor, THE RAGPICKER'S DREAM, SHANGRI-LA more fully develops the detail-oriented, irony-laced songwriting style Knopfler first hinted at in Dire Straits tunes like "Money for Nothing."

Rolling Stone (p.102) - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 - "Mark Knopfler has grown into one of rock's more mature and sharp-eyed writers....[The album] mixes sunniness and darkness in artful ways." Mojo (Publisher) (p.96) - 3 stars out of 5 - "There is genius in here....It also serves up three beguiling gasps of Tyne/Delta blues bewitchery." Our Shangri-la is Wonderfull Great Album!! 5:15AM and Our Shangri-la are the best!!!, but the others are good too. Recomended. I'm very happy with CD Universe...This CD takes only 10 days to arrive in my hands here in BRAZIL. Submitted by p.m.araujo (Itapetininga - São Paulo - Brasil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One of his best efforts lately I was slightly hesitant about purchasing this CD after purchasing the prior two CDs "All the Roadrunning" and "Ragpickers Dream" that seemed to me rather flat and away from his normal style. But he certainly redeemed himself with this CD that is very reminiscent of Dire Straits early albums. The lyrics are out of this world and he still has a way of making a simple guitar note sound so elegant. I'd like to see Mark Knopfler and Sting team up for a CD together since Mark's and Sting's voices blend so well together. Of course for the true Mark Knopfler fan you will know that Sting has performed with Dire Straits way back when on the song "Money For Nothing". Mark or Sting if you are reading this do the world a favor and do an CD together. For those of you looking to buy this particular CD, do yourself a favor as there is not a bad song on the entire CD. True Knopfler A master songwriter in his element, 5:15AM, Boom Like That, Back to Tupelo, Sonny Liston, fantastic songs based on real people.
Google words like Angus Sibbet, Ray Kroc, Elvis Presley and Sonny Liston and you will see what I mean.
This mastery of lyric and music complementation are back the the young Mark of Romeo and Juliet and Telegraph Road. Submitted by James Brown (York, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
He can do better I am a Knopfler fan, hence i like this album. His unique guitar style has always impressed me. I agree with the term 'Rock poetry' in describing the songs. His ability of story telling through song is beyond amazing. My personal favourite has to be 'Boom Like That' which i heard on the radio prior to it's release. Won me over totally!
However i agree that the last few songs do drone a little bit. Knopfler is capable of better, more lively rock n' roll songs. I'd like to see a return to a Dire Straits vein of style. Certainly not the best of his solo career, for that try 'Sailing to Philladelphia'. Submitted by Dave (Scotland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Best of his career? There were a few songs on first listen that were downright boring, eg. last 4 tracks. But after awhile, all of the songs showed their brilliance. I think this is his best lyrical endeavor yet, the depth of which is astounding and invogorating, as a great album should be. A very mature effort, well-read but with his own flair for lyrical wordplay. The melodies speak bittersweetly, in an enjoyably catchy manner while the music is solid; no cheese here. The production that flowed through the Dire Straits albums is evident and more refined. The playing is what Knopfler has come to be: souful, understated, thoughtful. The band is not lacking as they help to underline the wonderful arrangements. I can't imagine everyone would appreciate this, after reading the initial reviews, but this is one of his (THE?) best. Shangri-La album

The Dire Straits' mastermind's first non-soundtrack solo album is a refreshingly diverse outing. Mellower overall than his previous fare, there's still plenty of stunning guitar work and solid songcrafting to be had here. The songs cover a lot of stylistic bases, from rock to folk, Celtic, blues and somber balladeering. The disc is full, yet its diversity never ...
| | Mark Knopfler Ragpicker's Dream CD (2002)
Shangri-La CD music
$8.45 The low-key nature of Mark Knopfler's third solo album (discounting soundtracks) won't be a surprise to those who are familiar with its fine predecessor. The biggest change from SAILING TO PHILADELPHIA is the focus on traditional/roots styles. Throughout much of RAGPICKER's dream, Knopfler comes on like a one-man Harry Smith's Anthology, touching on folk, country, and blues. As often as not, however, he brings it closer to home with UK folk flavoring, as on the opening "Why Aye Man." He also displays more of a sense of humor here, ...

Shangri-La songs
$6.99 As guitar gods go, Mark Knopfler is a guy whose mellow music-making approach is at odds with the over-the-top images generally associated with the aforementioned tag. That notwithstanding, Knopfler demonstrates on LIVE FROM SHANGRI-LA that his kind of subtle instrumental skill and deft wielding of musical textures make any kind of six-string ...

| | Aerosmith Big Ones CD (1994)
Shangri-La music CDs
$10.79 By now Aerosmith's story of survival is deeply imbedded in rock mythology. Band reaches outlandish stadium-sized stardom in the `70s; band splinters under the weight of their toxic abuse; members undergo detox; clean and sober band returns to a new apex of superstardom in the `90s: a classic tale of excess and success. It is rock 'n' roll's great American redemption, and BIG ONES is a greatest hits soundtrack to the comeback portion of this story--with two new tunes to serve as an encore of sorts.
BIG ONES also illustrates that the Aerosmith that's come to define current mainstream rock is not the Aerosmith of old. The blues-veined, pocket-Stones sound that introduced white boys to "Walking The Dog" has given way to lascivious arena-metal ("Love In An Elevator," "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)") and emotional power-ballads ("Angel", "Cryin'"). Age has also brought about a change in the topics that the band chooses to address, concerning themselves with child abuse in "Janie's Got A Gun," and morality in "Living On The Edge."
Yet, with Aerosmith what you see is what you get--therein lies the beauty--and even with the mild tinkering of the machinery, BIG ONES proves that their commercial train just keeps a-rollin'.

$12.15 Kill Switch...Klick started out as a solo recording project of d.A. Sebasstian in 1991. Later Mike Ditmore joined and KsK started playing out live in the Seattle area.Various members came and went but the core remained Sebasstian and Ditmore. They also toured the Western U.S. on the infamous Muzak For The Masses Tour with grindcore band And Christ Wept. 1997 saw the release of deGenerate and Alt. as well as a coast to coast U.S. tour. Right before the tour Ditmore quit the band to further his career with the Boeing Company. After the release of Organica Sebasstian began doing his main body of recording and performing under his own name (as well as several other side-project names) using Kill Switch...Klick for his more ambient and electronic recordings. 2001 saw the release of Milkin' It For All It Worth a best of collection enhanced CD, with a Quicktime video for Produkt (Mass Market Mix) on Cleopatra Records and the reissue of ...
