FARM is in every respect an equal to Dinosaur, Jr's 2007 comeback, BEYOND: a muscular, melodic monster that stands among the best albums the band has made. It possesses an impressive combination of vigor and consistency, sounding as if it could have arrived in the early '90s, minus some subtle distinctions in production and attitude. Dinosaur Jr.'s assuredness is striking; Mascis may drawl that he "did it wrong" on the pre-chorus of "There's No Here," but once again his tongue is firmly in cheek, and any traces self-mythologizing slackerdom are steamrollered by the band's roar. The songwriting is strong, with Mascis alternating between molten rock & roll ("Pieces"), fuzzy pop gems ("Over It" and "I Want to Know"), and churning slow burns ("Ocean in the Way"), while Lou Barlow throws in two good numbers. As good as the songwriting is, the real rush comes from the band's interplay, sometimes taking upwards of seven or eight minutes to get where they're going. Although there have been imitators and disciples, this is a sound that's utterly unique to Dinosaur Jr.

Sony/BMG's Legacy imprint decided to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Woodstock by issuing a slew of double-disc deluxe packages by catalog artists who played the festival. Each slipcase contains the featured artist's entire performance at Woodstock and as a bonus, an LP sleeve reproduction of a classic album issued near the time the festival occurred, as well as fine, individually designed double-sided poster. Of the five volumes in the WOODSTOCK EXPERIENCE series, the Jefferson Airplane's volume is one of the most compelling in the series. Musically, this is one of the greatest live performances we have on tape of the band at their creative peak. There are five previously unreleased tracks in this set including Fred Neil's "The Other Side of This Life," "3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds," "Wooden Ships," "The Ballad of You, Me & Pooneil," "Come Back Baby," and the Airplane's set closer "The House at Pooneil Corners."

Motley Crue may have been the glam metal kings of the '80s. But, for a while at least, Twisted Sister gave them heated competition. While the Crue and their L.A. cohorts (Ratt, Dokken, etc.) were dead-serious in their approach, Twisted Sister's music and videos always contained an element of humor-something most bands of the era sorely lacked. 1984's STAY HUNGRY was Twisted Sister's double-platinum breakthrough, its popularity spurred by the imaginative (and hilarious) videos for the hits "We're Not Gonna Take It" and "I Wanna Rock."
The Long Island-based Twisted Sister built a solid following, gigging constantly since the early '70s and riding on the strength of such albums as UNDER THE BLADE and YOU CAN'T STOP ROCK N' ROLL. All of which set the band up for STAY HUNGRY. Singer Dee Snider proved to quite an intimidating figure, bedecked in garish make-up and transvestite gear, and his outspoken personality carried Twisted Sister's songs and stage-show. STAY HUNGRY proved to be the band's finest hour, containing such tracks as "Burn In Hell," "The Price," "S.M.F.," "Horror-Teria," and "Stay Hungry" itself. Unfortunately, Twisted Sister was unable to sustain such success, and the band broke up only a few years later.

As always, frontman Chad Kroeger's gritty voice remains Nickelback's calling card, and his emotive singing carries every tune, most notably the nostalgic "Photograph" and "Far Away," a tender, echo-laden ballad. Kroger has never met a guitar effect that he didn't like, as evidenced by the revved-up "Next Contestant," which relates the, ahem, difficulties of having a beautiful girlfriend. Though ALL THE RIGHT REASONS is slightly more eclectic than the group's past releases, it's unmistakably a Nickelback outing, and fans of the band are sure to be pleased.
On 2005's ALL THE RIGHT REASONS, the Canadian heavy-rock band Nickelback offers up more of its straightforward, guitar-fueled anthems. The pummeling opening track, "Follow You Home," features a no-frills Southern-rock vibe bolstered by the presence of ZZ Top guitarist/vocalist Billy Gibbons (who also appears on the jam-like closer, "Rockstar"), while the crushing "Side of a Bullet" is dedicated to Pantera's Dimebag Darrell, and includes an overdubbed solo by the late six-string hero.

Very much of a piece with that band's output, DAVE ALVIN & THE GUILTY WOMEN features Alvin's trademark blend of jaunty Bakersfield rhythms and lightning-swift rockabilly licks. A few left turns like the Central Avenue-styled jump blues of "Boss of the Blues" and the ruefully apocalyptic country of "These Times We're Living In" lend the album some much-needed stylistic diversity.

This 1957 recording was the second of Mal Waldron's four Mal-titled albums (MAL/1, MAL/2, MAL/3, MAL/4). Divided between standards and originals, Mal leads a sextet throughout, with featured soloists John Coltrane and Jackie McLean.
The set as a whole adheres closer to the prevailing post-bop style of the day. Waldron's elegantly minimalist approach is most audible in his solos, and occasionally in his writing. The closing "One By One" is distinctly Waldron, with its angularly fractured march-like cadence and moody bearing. For the most part though, his writing had yet to embrace the innovative characteristics that would emerge on his 1961 album THE QUEST.
Recorded in Hackensack, New Jersey on April 19 and May 17, 1957. Originally released on Prestige (7111) except tracks #4 and #5 released on New Jazz (8316).

Without abandoning the quirky mix of gorgeous, acoustic guitar-driven pop tunes and heart-rending, misery-driven lyrics with which they're most closely associated, The Sundays' STATIC & SILENCE finds the band further fleshing out their lush, dreamy mope-scapes. With a darker, slower approach more akin to Country than to Britpop, Harriet Wheeler's angelic voice and melancholic lyrics are given a more intimate treatment than on previous albums. Guitarist David Gavurin builds each song with intimate acoustic guitars, breezy voicings, and spacious arrangements, punctuating them with chiming, cascading layers of arpeggiated electric guitar.
Inspired instrumental touches abound; on "When I'm Thinking About You," Gavurin's baroque-sounding fingerpicking is accented with a brass section and bird calls. "Cry" mixes plaintive rhythm guitar and swirling strings, while "Another Flavour" is a distant, tremolo-filled rocker about the ephemeral nature of fashion. The somber brass on the closer "Monochrome" continues the musical exploration, giving way to sliding guitars, underscoring the depth and complexity which make STATIC & SILENCE a graceful, strong testament to the growth and staying power of these delicate pop heroes.

A Mississippi native, Kelley recorded her debut album in Brooklyn with producer J.D. Foster (Calexico, Laura Cantrell, Richard Buckner). The album is a beautiful reflection of Kelley's live shows and features the honey-sweet harmonies of Sarah Fullen and Virginia Kull. The album also showcases the work of Joan Baez's longtime drummer George Javori. Kelley studied acting at SMU in Texas where she took a guitar elective two years into her studies. Although she grew up singing in her small town church choir and sang with a jazz band in Nantucket in her teens, she hadn’t considered a career in music until she picked up the guitar and began writing songs. Kelley moved to New York City in the fall of 2003 and quickly made a name for herself in the city's live music scene. She blends Patsy Cline's soulful delivery and heart-wrenching sincerity with Lucinda Williams' southern literary prowess and damn-straight common grace insights. She has appeared on World CafĂƒÂ© singing with Mark Geary and appears on the “Loggerheads” soundtrack with Kim Carnes and Patty Griffin.

With Seeing Blind you never know what you are going to get. If you want a taste of their musical vision, listen to a song like "Knew You", the explosive hit off their first E.P. "urgency".Produced by Seeing Blind and Dave Hillis (The Afghan Whigs), "urgency" reveals their ability to craft infectious & diverse songs. "urgency" was recorded in Seattle, WA. and was made with 100% real musicians (not tested on animals). With only a few bumps and scrapes they managed to release their first E.P. together in January 2005. The band had to call in a few favors (including coercing the house engineer to make Thai food for them) in order to keep things running smoothly. That engineer ended up filling the position of bassist with the band.So, after only five hectic days in the studio their musical child was born at London Bridge Studios. While Melissa was laying down her vocal tracks, the rest of the band was hard at work sticking to their strict routine of pool playing, channel surfing and general trash talking. After the mixing and mastering was finished, they hit the road again to take their music to the masses. Seeing Blind has been described as alternative rock with emotional intelligent lyrics, soaring melodies, and solid grooves. Influences include Jeff Buckley, The Dave Matthews Band, Tool, Rusted Root, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Ani DiFranco.
