| | Bebel Gilberto Tanto Tempo CD (2000)
Trio Eletrico
$13.99 Bebel Gilberto was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist. TANTO TEMPO was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Musica Popular Brasileira Album.
This is a collection of remixes from the TANTO TEMPO album. Remixers include Peter Kruder, Truby Trio, Rae & Christian, King Britt.
Bebel Gilberto is the daughter of Brazilian singer/guitarist Joao Gilberto. TANTO TEMPO, her debut release, brings a contemporary sheen to classic bossa novas. Acoustic accompaniment predominates, with the addition of occasional electronica, making this collection a perfect reflection of the late-20th century two-way street between traditional Brazilian bossa nova and the American producers who covet its easy, sexy sound.
Gilberto's voice is assured and steady. As with other South American singers gaining attention in the States, such as Peru's Susana Baca, she's a model of restrained passion, her phrasing subtly and sensuously caressing her music. Gilberto sings mostly in Portuguese, but performs a few songs in English, such as the dreamy "August Day Song." "Lonely" finds her paired with Washington D.C. downtempo producers Thievery ...

| | Laura Pausini Resta In Ascolto CD (2004) Italian Edition
Trio Eletrico
$8.29 One linguistic myth is that anyone who speaks Spanish is automatically fluent in Italian; the languages are quite similar, but similar is by no means the same as identical. However, it is true that anyone who is fluent in Italian has a definite advantage
No stranger to success, Europop sensation Laura Pausini sold over 25 million albums in her first decade or so of recording, quite a feat for someone who was just turning 30 years old and had never broken into the lucrative English-language market. Yet she essentially struck out when she did try to cross over to that English-language market in 2002 with From the Inside. Put mildly, the album bombed stateside. Its qualities (and the qualities of stateside consumers) aside, it was the first full-fledged failure Pausini had experienced in a career of multi-million-selling albums and sold-out world tours. Here was someone who had sung for Pope John Paul II at Christmas and for Barbra Streisand at a birthday party, yet she couldn't sing for ordinary Americans, who just weren't interested in her melodramatic schmaltz. And so Pausini took a sizable break, perhaps the first of her whirlwind, world-conquering career. When she did finally emerge from her self-imposed silence, she returned with Escucha, her first Spanish-language album in four long years (not counting her best-of collection ...

| | Tish Hinojosa Best Of The Sandia: Watermelon 1991-1992 CD (1997)
Trio Eletrico
$9.69 While Tish Hinojosa only recorded briefly for the Watermelon label at the beginning of her career, Taos to Tennessee, Aquella Noche, and Memorabilia Navidena represented a distinct body of work from a new singer/songwriter. While Hinojosa grew up in Texas, she kept close ties to her Mexican heritage, often choosing to sing in Spanish. This bilingual, bicultural approach also lent her songwriting a unique subject matter. Add to this her lovely, warm voice and pleasant country-folk arrangements, and there's much to admire on her early albums. The cuts from Taos to Tennessee represent five of the best pieces from Hinojosa's delightful debut. These songs, including the title track and "Prairie Moon," are as poignant and tuneful as anything she has written. There's also her achingly beautiful vocal on Irving Berlin's "Always," which evokes Patsy Cline. Recorded live and in Spanish, Aquella Noche ...
| | State Of Grace II: Turning To Peace CD (2003)
Trio Eletrico
$7.59 Paul Schwartz's STATE OF GRACE II continues where STATE OF GRACE left off. On this album, the imaginative producer draws from two Latin texts, the Magnificat and the Stabat Mater. The former expresses Mary's joy, while the latter focuses on her grief as Jesus is put to death.
Mariology is usually associated with the medieval period, yet this music interprets Mary in a contemporary light. Each piece on STATE OF GRACE II has a liturgical feel to it, but is performed using contemporary sounds and harmonies. The opening track, " Magnificat," has the Crouch End Festival Chorus performing with keyboards and an electronic backbeat. "Curación (Sunlight on Water)" has a Latin American feel, given the rich percussion layers and Carlos Santana's emotive guitar leads. With "Stabat Mater" the music grows darker. Here, Lisbeth Scott's voice becomes the focus. Known for her contributions to THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, Scott brings to life the story of Mary with great poignancy. Scott's duets with ...
