Reads His Poetry album
$12.59 STELLAR REGIONS consists of Coltrane's entire February 15, 1967 recording session. All selections were previously unavailable--except "Offering," which appeared on EXPRESSION.
Producer Bob Thiele had the foresight to realize that John Coltrane's creative arc was ascendant, allowing the saxophonist unlimited studio time during their years at Impulse! However, many of the sessions from the final year of his life were long presumed lost, when in fact, they were safely stored away in wife Alice Coltrane's possession.
Even for hardcore Coltrane fans, the beauty and power of STELLAR REGIONS should prove a revelation. The session was a particularly inspiring date by the final version of the John Coltrane Quartet--featuring bassist Jimmy Garrison, drummer Rashied Ali and pianist Alice Coltrane. STELLAR REGIONS shows that Coltrane's restless creativity was still at play, as he scaled down and distilled elements from his "late period." Improvisations that used to last hours are now reprised in a few minutes (the angelic title tune, the jagged "Iris," the angular alternate take of "Tranesonic") with fresh melodic contrasts and bold modal shapes ("Configuration" and "Sun Star") to accommodate the thrashing excitement ...

Reads His Poetry CD music
$7.45 George Clooney makes his directorial debut with this frenetic, visually dazzling black comedy. Based on notorious television producer Chuck Barris' "unauthorized autobiography," Clooney's film reinforces Barris' outlandish claim that he lived a secret life as a hitman for the CIA. Sam Rockwell stars as Barris, a fresh-faced dreamer who moves to New York to find success in television. Pretty soon, he's written a hit song ("Palisades Park"), has shacked up with the ultra-peppy Penny (Drew Barrymore), and has his first successful game show, THE DATING GAME. But as if that weren't enough excitement, he is soon recruited by CIA Special Agent Jim Byrd (Clooney) to become a hired killer for the federal government. As Barris' subsequent shows (THE NEWLYWED GAME, THE GONG SHOW) take off, the conflicted producer uses them as a front for his undercover job, ...
| | Frank Zappa - The Dub Room Special DVD (1982)
Reads His Poetry music CDs
$11.85 Starting in 1974 and continuing for nearly a decade, Frank Zappa's annual Halloween concerts were a New York City institution. When the avant-rocker scored a Top 40 hit with "Valley Girl" in 1982, he skipped that year's Halloween performance and instead chose to premiere a 90-minute documentary called FRANK ZAPPA'S DUB ROOM at New York's Ritz Theater. Produced, directed, written, conducted, composed, arranged, and performed by Zappa, the documentary was comprised of two concerts--the 1981 Halloween show at the Palladium, and the December 1974 KCET television special, A TOKEN OF HIS EXTREME--as well as animation by claymation artist and longtime Zappa collaborator, Bruce Bickford. Released on home video in 1982, the Dub Room special has long remained a hard-to-find rarity, but this program rewards Zappa devotees with a presentation of the documentary in its entirety (albeit in a slightly different version after being remastered ...
| | Peter Gabriel - Still Growing Up Live & Unwrapped DVDs (2005)
Reads His Poetry songs
$22.65 Two programs featuring the remarkable music and personality of Peter Gabriel are featured here. In the LIVE section, a complement to 2003's GROWING UP LIVE, director Hamish Hamilton captures still more of Gabriel's legendary live shows, this time at smaller and more intimate European venues, rather than spectacular arenas. In UNWRAPPED, Anna Gabriel directs a segment exploring the origins and stories behind Gabriel's songs, which includes exclusive footage of some of his stripped-down, bare-bones performances.

| | Talking Heads Speaking In Tongues CD (1983) Bonus Tracks; Digipak; DualDisc
Reads His Poetry album
$16.69 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
On REMAIN IN LIGHT, the Heads fused their twitchy, intellectual geek-rock sensibilities with an organic, spiritual funkiness that catapulted them into a new artistic realm, virtually unfettered by the shackles of their "new wave" past. SPEAKING IN TONGUES picks up where that album left off, expanding on the band's newfound funk aesthetic and even upping the danceability quotient a notch or two. The Heads let their hair down a bit more here than on REMAIN IN LIGHT, but while the tone is a bit less serious (as on the party-starting "Burning Down The House,") the highly developed conceptual sensibilites of Byrne and company are still at work, even without the assistance of former producer Brian Eno.
Some of the previous album's airy abstractions are stripped away here, to make more room on the dance floor. Tunes like "Girlfriend is Better" attack both the feet and the mind, in typically quirky Talking Heads style. "This Must Be the Place/Naive Melody" stands out as a pretty, affecting ballad about finding a sense of belonging (it's melodic charms were so pervasive it was eventually covered by folk-rocker Shawn Colvin).
This Dualdisc presents the entire album, along with 2 bonus CD tracks. The DVD side features an alternate ...
| | Bukowski: Born Into This DVD (2004)
Reads His Poetry CD music
$22.39 Director John Dullaghan spent seven years searching high and low for the most pertinent material he could find about the notorious writer, drinker, and recluse Charles Bukowski (1920-1994). The result is BUKOWSKI: BORN INTO THIS, a highly entertaining, informative tribute to Bukowski's work, his life, and the people who were inspired and influenced by him. Using a large quantity of grainy black-and-white interview footage shot by German Cosmopolitan in the 1970s, some of the most frank conversations and classic moments in the film--Bukowski driving his car through L.A. with a big crack in the windshield, telling stories--come from this archival material. Other interviews come from Bukowski's wife and a smattering of girlfriends ranging from "Cupcakes" to Linda King, from a former post office coworker, and from celebrities and friends like Taylor Hackford, Bono, Sean Penn, Harry Dean Stanton, and Tom Waits. Barbet Schroeder also appears in the film to talk about his feature film BARFLY, based on Bukowski, which starred Mickey Rourke. With readings of Bukowski's poems peppered throughout, the documentary traces the progress of his life from his miserable childhood to his 14-year tenure as a postal worker, his column "Notes of a Dirty Old Man" in the L.A. Free Press, his foul mouth and dark outlook, ...
